I noticed this morning that Quinn was hunching over when trying to pass urine and feces today so I took him to one of the recommended vets this afternoon. Inglis Veterinary Hospital in Dunfermline. It was certainly worth the extra distance.

My usual vet tried to fob me off with a squeezed in appointment on the back of someone else. After paying £24 for a 2 minute check-up not that long ago I decided not to bother. They never spend much time with the pigs and show more interest in the usual dogs and cats.

So Quinn got a really detailed examination and the vet even asked questions about his diet, house and exercise levels! The other vets never asked these questions.

His teeth are fine, heartbeat fine and his stomach is soft. Poor thing ended up getting his insides squished to check things out :( The vet noticed that he had some discomfort when his stomach area was touched.

He has been given 5ml of Loxicom a day and 0.13ml of Septrin. I have to monitor him passing urine so his temporary cage is covered in paper towels.

Are these medications any good?

Sorry for the ramble by the way!

The Septrin will be good if it turns out to be an infection and the Loxicom is pain relief, the dose seems high though, do you mean 0.5ml? It's a while since I have been given Loxicom so can't remember the dosing but I though it was the same as Metacam. Has the vet asked you to collect urine to be tested?

Hi Helen. The sticker on the box for the Loxicom says 'Loxicom Cat 0.5mg/ml 5mls x 1.0.' then underneath 'Give 1kg dose on syringe' so I just followed the dosing on the syringe. I have dyscalculia and struggle with numbers so I could be mixed up!

Hope Quinn is feeling better soon x

Loxicom as far as we are aware is another name for Metacam and Septrin is an antibiotic for UTI's.

The best thing is to give him a big drink (by syringe if needed) and place him in a container until he pees and then suck this up in a sterile syringe. Be warned though, some pigs can hold it for hours. You will then need to keep it in a sterile container to take to the vet unless the vet has given you test sticks?

No test sticks! Thank you for the advice. I am waiting on him to pass urine as he doesn't seem to have at all today and that's one of the things I've to look for. I have separated him from Kasper and have an other appointment for tomorrow.

I'm going to post a photo of the stickers in case I have gotten mixed up!

Hi @lisaali and @My3cuteBoys

He has been passing urine all night but he wouldn't before I went to bed. Typical. I have just let him out to run around and he is fine. I haven't heard any squealing either.

The vet said not to go back unless he isn't passing urine. I am unsure of whether to go back because he seems better.

Hope he's OK now. One of our piggies is on the same drugs for her UTI

How's Quinn today.... xx

@lisaali He's running around wheeking! Appears to be very happy and takes his medicine without any effort xx
