Sadly we had to put our much loved parrot Oliver down today. He was 17 years old which isn't that old for a parrot at all. He'd been around since before I was born and when I was older I took over looking after him. He was such a beautiful boy with green feathers all over his body, red on his head and a little band of purple between his red head and his eyes. For weeks now he'd had the runs but apart from that he was his usual chirpy self. Only last night he was tucking into his grapes under the heat lamp we'd put up, it seemed to make him feel better being all cosy and warm.

My parents took him to the vets for blood tests whilst I was at school, the results showed that his kidneys were failing. The vets said they could try and give him more time but he'd probably be back at the vets within 24 hours. It was decided that the best thing to do would be to put him down, we didn't want him to suffer. 8...

So rest it peace Ollie, thank you for the years you gave us.

I am so sorry for your loss - it's hard to say good bye to a pet that has been there all your life!

I am so sorry for your sad loss. Huge hugs to you.

Rest well, sweet Oliver. xx

Thanks so much for all your messages of support, it's nice to know that people understand how hard it is to lose a pet, they become members of the family. I was upset today at school and a teacher had a go at me because of my attitude and I ended up bursting into tears. (It's not just Ollie that we've lost, we had to put our cat down a month ago) The teacher asked what was wrong so I explained and although he said sorry for shouting at me I had the feeling that he was thinking, why is she crying, it's just an animal. :(

What a shame. Its so difficult for non pet owners to truly understand just how difficult the loss of a pet can be. Remember we are all here to support you when you get down. Hugs to you..

I am so sorry to hear about Oliver. It is so hard losing a pet, you can guarantee you will get the right support on here, there aren't many people in general who put much importance on losing pets. They are the people who don't deserve pets.

I am so sorry. The only consellation (sp?) is that he was put to sleep before he began to really suffer, at least you can remember him as being normal and chirpy. x
