I think a poll is a good idea :)

Something I read rang true with me... People disagree with puppy farms so don't buy dogs from them, yet the small furries (not just guineas) start off in pretty much the same equivilant and people see it as acceptable. Maybe they are just naive as to where they start their lives.

It's a pro-rescue forum so people are going to say that. A forum IS a place to share opinions and ideas and if people are going to post on a public forum then they should be prepared for ALL opinions, not just ones they agree with. It's just how forums work and to be honest the forum would be a boring place (just like the real world) if everyone agreed with everyone else all the time.

Well people can say what they like. Just saying I prefer forums where things are kept more friendly, but people still debate in special sections or on separate threads. I see nothing wrong with people putting forth their opinions in a friendly discussion, but it is a bit of a problem that people are being made feel unwelcome sometimes on the forum.

Yeah I think that's true, they don't know that's where a LOT of pet shop pets come from :(

I think a poll on whether the forum should allow P@H or similar pigs to be advertised in the rescue and rehoming section is a good idea - as P@H has a massive advertising budget is it right that a pro-rescue forum should give them free advertising too?

Well maybe that's something the forum being pro-rescue could look into making more common knowledge?

Yeah, maybe there should be a stickie about pet shop pigs. With facts, about piggy-mills and also what kind of problems you can have, health problems, pregnancy, missexing, etc. Great idea!

I cant remember where, but, soon after getting my boys from PAH adoption center which i believed was part of the blue cross, and coming onto this forum I researched into PAH guinea pigs and where they come from, now yes some do come good breeders but i found an article i cant remember the site, with photographs of the guinea's they were kept in plastic tanks stacked one upon top of the other. It was horrific to see. Absoloutly horrific. I havent seen anything in mass like that before. :(

i know theirs been huge changes and movements in the way our food is brought up (trying to abolish battery hens, pigs kept in crates etc) i think their should be an undercover program where they show the public how and what conditions the majourity of pet shops animals are kept in. It'd be an eye opener for many.

Anywhoos that above is OT, sorry i was just replying to the link shared, i think the poll suggestion would be a fab idea!

This is merely an argument about Rescue v Pet Shop - not about people being bad.

It shouldn't be an arguement. It's personal choice and therefore there isn't anything to argue over.

One of the suppliers named by someone in the know is Simons Rodents. The list of animals in stock is eye opening, as is the list of frozen animals destined as feed.

Other animals have to eat as well. Yes, most guinea pig owners will be upset by this, however a lot of people in this country own exotic animals and they have to feed them something. You'll never get away from that.

But if someone makes a post saying something like, "I just bought a new pig in the pet shop" then people shouldn't say "oh you should have gone to a rescue". They're allowed have an opinion, but it's a bit pushy to say that, IMO.

I agree - It's not like the new owner will say "oh ok then, I'll take them back and go to a rescue". What's done is done, so there's no need to be rude to people.

I agree to a point, however if you apply the same thought to breeders, most people wouldn't think twice about buying a pure bred dog from a breeder, and in a lot of cases travel a very long distance and pay a hell of a lot of money to get one. So I don't see why people (in general, not aimed at you personally) need to be so rude to people who have bought piggies from breeders and/or pet shops. Again, it is personal choice or it may be a lack of knowledge about rescues etc.

I'm sure the vast majority of forum users are well aware that this is a pro rescue forum. It is mostly new members who didn't read the rules properly that mention things that every gets so worked up about. But there's no excuse for people who pounce on other's threads and are rude to others.
