I'm posting this on behalf of my mum O0 : (hope ive posted this in the right place too)

We are going to be moving sometime next year from North Suffolk to somewhere around the Norwich area and after reading alot of posts about the amount of pigs that need to go into rescues around norfolk and suffolk my mum has started having thoughts on perhaps starting a small rescue to help some of the homeless pigs. She asked me to ask for some advice before we seriously start thinking about it. It wouldn't be until sometime next year as we still need to find a house where we have room for the pigs and we will need to sell our house too. She doesn't work (my dad does though), she home educates me (13) and my 3 younger sisters, who could be going back to school depending on the area etc, so she does have spare time. She used to breed guinea pigs before she had us and when we were younger, but we always kept the every single pig we had, and when they did have to go to a new home they all went to one person, and we made sure they went to the right home. She understands the situation around here now and would love to help.
I care for all 13 of the pigs we have now (obviously I have help with money, vets etc). I clean them, clip nails (whilst supervised and with help from my older sister, 19, who is also experienced), health check them, groom them, feed them, when they're ill i'm always the one up with them most hours of the night caring for him/her. I'm quite experienced with piggies so I hopefully would be able to help my mum out with cleaning hutches, feeding and other little things like that. Then of course my mum would deal with the more major things like health, vets, money, travelling etc. Anyway, this is just an idea but any advice is welcome.

Hi Sophie,

Wow you are home educated thats great, something I've wanted to do with the girls but Emily loves school! Anyway, I think this is a great idea! As you know I'm getting my ideas together too to start a resuce, I think the most important thing when starting up is having the funds to do it. Maybe think of some fundraising ideas to raise capital. You never know what pigs you are going to get, they could be ill or pregnant and money will be needed.

Good luck! Maybe your mum could register too, would be nice to get to know another piggy addict! :)

I have to agree start by fostering then you have the backup of a rescue to show you the ropes.
Once you get the hang of it you can then consider starting up on your own

To be able to foster or rescue is a great experience. Just remember to have guidelines of how many you can take.

I hope you manage to do what you are planning, its a great joy to have such lovely little creatures around you.

We have just had to close our rescue and are in the process of rehoming lots. Its hard work but worth it.

Will keep fingers crossed for you though.

Thankyou! I love it :D I never got on well at school, I think it used to be cos there was quite a bit of bitchiness between all the girls in middle school and my mum having 6 girls has already had enough of it lol.
Funds would need building first, so we would do that before anything. :)
I think what karengpr said is probably better, as it will give us more experience. Then hopefully in years to come we could begin a small rescue.
I'll ask my mum to sign up :D

I think fostering does sound better and this is how I will probably go as well, I've not a great deal of knowledge on ill pigs but I'm learning all the time. Hopefully by fostering we can gain more knowledge and help those rescues that are overloaded. :)

How cool you're home educated 8) I was taught at home too, back in the 90s, and loved every minute. It's great to meet someone else enjoying it :D

I don't have any experience as an official rescue, so I'm afraid I can't help much. Fostering sounds like an excellent idea; a chance to learn the ropes without so much pressure. Good luck with it all.

We recently started up our rescue (just near Norwich airport) after many years of fostering various animals for the RSPCA and elsewhere, Cheryl has been great giving advice and support in our first steps into rescuing. It is a bit interesting at first, planning to become a rescue is one thing but the enormity of doing it is another matter. We have just taken in our first big influx of guineas and are in the process of dealing with pregnancys and various medical problems.
I am still learning, although I have my own research and experience there is always something new that crops up, our most recent one was a guinea pig with a skin problem on his face after seeing the vet they said it was an allergic reaction, and after some deduction turns out he was allergic to watermelon. I had not heard of that one before!
Pregnacies still worry me sick and I think they always will, I have never been involved in breeding so am not that experienced with them yet, but I have read anything I can get my hands/eyes on. There are great vets here who are very supportive and also lots of people I can phone for advice if needed.
Good luck with your move and the fostering/rescue. It is great your whole family is keen to get involved O0

Thankyou very much for the advice Vikki O0 .
Ive had experience with helping a guinea pig in labor, URI's, Bloat and Minor Skin problems, but like you said there is always something new that crops up. Thanks again! O0
