I just came back home from a vet visit as it seemed one of my Guinea pigs may have had a uri. He said her Lungs sounded great, heart was fantastic and so was breathing. He had mentioned we caught the uri early and he gave me a bottle of Orbax medication. I’ve never had my guinea pigs on this and she doesn’t seem to have a severe case. I’m just wondering if anybody has given their guinea pigs Orbax? I’m hesitant since it is something new.

I have seen it prescribed once or twice before. It is a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic, mainly targeted at cats and dogs.
since the active ingredient in baytril is called enrofloxacin and the one in Orbax is called orbifloxacin, I assume that they belong to the same class. It is not a penicillin based antibiotic, which is the main thing.

Okay! They also just told me to give her .15ml twice a day. Should I give her some bene-bac an hour or so, twice a day right before she gets the medicine? read that it would help her gut a bit since it is an antibiotic. I plan on giving her the medicine once in the morning and once at night

Hi!

Bene-bac is a probiotic powder that contains bacteria which help with the digestion. Antibiotics will not necessarily only attack the 'bad' bacteria but also the gut microbiome that is responsible for breaking down the nutrients in the gut.

If you have a healthy companion, then 'poo soup' i.e. transfer of live healthy guinea pig gut microbiome is even more effective when done correctly but you can give both bene-bac and poo-soup.
