Rivervixen’s piggies

BIG HUGS

Oh, dear! Raven was really going at Bruno there. I have seen the occasional tussle (non-biting fur ball) during mixed gender bonding, which was always the end of line.

Personally, I would call it shots. Raven clearly doesn't want Bruno in her territory and she has made up her mind for good. :(

She was, we still can't believe it. We have the extra 2x2 on the way currently which will make it up to a 2x8. On the piggie cam we have seen Raven and Bruno laying with each other while being separated by the divider. Is there absolutely no chance at success if we try again in a few weeks do you think? Sue said we could, but not to rush it. OH said no more piggies, so just feeling really sorry for Bruno being in his side, he does really want to be with them

No. Their current behaviour is what I call a 'territorial power lie-in' to mark the boundaries of each piggy's territory where they adjoin and is not a desire to be back together. It is very typical fall-out behaviour after a separation. They do not want to share a territory again.
A - Z of Guinea Pig Behaviours (see entry: territorial behaviours)

I wish I had better news but you are sadly looking at a divorce and Raven never really having accepted Bruno fully. Sows can unfortunately be ever so underhanded with their withheld acceptance, as I know myself. :(

Thank you for the information, definitely sad news but if its decided then theres nothing we can do. Will Bruno feel alone in this arrangement? My response was to try another piggie for Bruno in what will be his 2x4 but if it failed we have no more space for piggies as 2x8 is the absolute limit. Feel so bad for little Bruno, he really does just want to be with other piggies

You could try a younger, sub-adult sow that is still looking for guidance and has the full push of her biological urges behind her; that only very rarely fails. Adult sows are very much another matter. Otherwise, Bruno still has got all the social interaction through the bars.

My piggies live separately and they seem to have transferred some of their interest onto me. I think that as long as Mommy Slave keeps bringing the veg and hay when it is requested / expected, they are pretty content. Polo does climb up the cage side between himself and Truffle and chews and sniffs between the bars, but when I held Truffle up for him to see, he squealed and ran into his hide and sat making little upset noises. Attempts to meet on neutral territory resulted in very definite angry / frightened wild eyed behaviour and loud teeth clattering. There is instinctive herd following behaviour, but neither wants to be in direct contact with the other or to share space. They communicate by scents and body language and are aware of everything the other piggy is doing, but seems to be doing really well without sharing. They seem rather proud of their personal hay pile and houses and their ability to tell to MS for what they need, so I think Bruno could be OK with the divider between them. They can still talk piggy between the bars 🏡

I did think this, but there's also the matter of when we (knock on wood not any time soon) lose Bruno, would Raven struggle to accept this piggie too. OH is very hesitant to get a baby girl through the fear that it happens again with Raven not wanting to accept another piggie further down the line 😕 Bruno has also been showing behaviours like he did when he lost Ozzy, he is being a bit withdrawn and just hiding in his beds, he has laid with them a few times at the bars but he isn't being half as active as he was when he was physically with them. He hasnt lost any weight and is still eating, but the happy noises hes always done when hes with other piggies physically have disappeared, hes very quiet which isn't like him at all

It is really lovely to hear that your piggies are happy being neighbours 🙂 at least with him making upset noises, you knew for sure it was the right choice. Your attempts at meeting on neutral territory do sound really nerve wracking and like neither pig wanted to be with the other 😕 they're very lucky to have such a devoted piggie mum. Really hoping Bruno adapts to this as well, they do keep shoving their noses through to try and steal from the others hay pile, it is funny to watch 😊

Bruno is inevitably feeling very gutted and I do fully understand your dilemma. Have a chat with Sue but to be honest, what is not an option is Raven ever accepting Bruno again.

I can have a talk to her, I do accept that Raven won't ever accept Bruno again, will see what she has to say. Really appreciate your honesty, as hard as it is 💖

Thank you 🙏 If one of my piggies goes over the bridge, I would do my best to find a friend for the remaining piggy who can live in the same cage with him. I was thinking that adopting a young male and neutering him might work once he has fully recovered from the op. But I hope I won't need to think about that for a long time ❤️

Bruno is down to 889, he is probably fine but taking him to the vet tomorrow just in case. He made a strange one off noise earlier that I've never heard before. He doesn't usually drop below 900, I know hes aging and it isnt quite a 50g loss but he does keep pawing at his mouth as well. His front teeth are great. I think after losing Ozzy, I just need peace of mind that hes okay

Thank you both 💖 seen as though Bruno isn't bonded with Raven or Wren, does he need to go in the carrier alone?

Just taken Bruno to the vet after I saw him pawing at his mouth again. She has checked his teeth and said they're not in a bad place, and nothing that could warrant a dental currently. She suggested more Timothy hay for his diet, which we've recently added again so thats good. A big sigh of relief that hes doing fine, his weight is great and hes more than happy to eat everything in sight, I think after Ozzy, I just needed peace of mind really
