Hi, hope you’re well!

Rosie, my girl who’s over 6 years old now, has been stumbling here and there. Her weight is stable, she is eating well, begging for extras. But when running around she sometimes stumbles on her hind legs and when she was really excited (snack time) she stumbled at the cage railings and even lost balance when she got her cucumber.

What could this be? It’s the weekend, I am wondering if I should wait till Monday for the vet or view it as urgent.

Thank you all!

Rosie is doing very good still.. she’s a happy girl. Active, eating and minding her piggy business. Still wobbly here and there. I fear it might be signs of arthritis, but can’t be sure.

Had trouble reaching the vets this weekend.. we recently moved to a new city and I found some clinics that were supposed to be open, but couldn’t reach anyone by phone.

Hope I’ll have more luck tomorrow. Not sure what else to do right now.

Hi

It could be stiffness from arthritis which makes balancing more difficult and can cause elderlies with advanced arthritis stumble or fall over or a neurological issue that affects the balance as well. Your vet should be able to find out with a hands-on diagnosis.

Please wait until Monday as your vet can't do much about the neurological aspect. Keep an eye out for her in the coming in case she is falling over and cannot get up again. Any arthritis meds take several weeks to kick in, so they are not an emergency.

I full appreciate that it is a very anxious time for you. Old age sadly often comes with plenty of unwanted and uninvited company. :(

I’m sorry that you have this worry over Rosie 😞 It could well be arthritis (((hugs))) I would wait until Monday to see the vet as it doesn’t sound like an emergency.

But in the meantime, it’s a good sign she’s still alert and eating and drinking etc.

She’s beautiful 🥰

Thank you, I hope so too! It tears at me that she’s probably in discomfort and confused.

HUGS

It's tough to see somebody you love - whatever the species - suffer. But as long as she is eating and active, she is able to wait until you can see a vet with guinea pig experience tomorrow.
