Hi, hope you’re well!

Rosie, my girl who’s over 6 years old now, has been stumbling here and there. Her weight is stable, she is eating well, begging for extras. But when running around she sometimes stumbles on her hind legs and when she was really excited (snack time) she stumbled at the cage railings and even lost balance when she got her cucumber.

What could this be? It’s the weekend, I am wondering if I should wait till Monday for the vet or view it as urgent.

Sending support 🙏❤️ I hope the problem can be discovered easily and treated 🐾❤️

I don't do emergency vets any more except for PTS that can't wait.
They are not worth the trouble in Vienna most of the times.
Do you have access to a good vet in the weekend?
Sending healing vibes to your lovely girl!

Thank you all!

Rosie is doing very good still.. she’s a happy girl. Active, eating and minding her piggy business. Still wobbly here and there. I fear it might be signs of arthritis, but can’t be sure.

Had trouble reaching the vets this weekend.. we recently moved to a new city and I found some clinics that were supposed to be open, but couldn’t reach anyone by phone.

Hope I’ll have more luck tomorrow. Not sure what else to do right now.

Sweet girl, hope she’s comfortable🖤

Hi

It could be stiffness from arthritis which makes balancing more difficult and can cause elderlies with advanced arthritis stumble or fall over or a neurological issue that affects the balance as well. Your vet should be able to find out with a hands-on diagnosis.

Please wait until Monday as your vet can't do much about the neurological aspect. Keep an eye out for her in the coming in case she is falling over and cannot get up again. Any arthritis meds take several weeks to kick in, so they are not an emergency.

I full appreciate that it is a very anxious time for you. Old age sadly often comes with plenty of unwanted and uninvited company. :(

I’m sorry that you have this worry over Rosie 😞 It could well be arthritis (((hugs))) I would wait until Monday to see the vet as it doesn’t sound like an emergency.

But in the meantime, it’s a good sign she’s still alert and eating and drinking etc.

She’s beautiful 🥰

Thank you, I hope so too! It tears at me that she’s probably in discomfort and confused.

HUGS

It's tough to see somebody you love - whatever the species - suffer. But as long as she is eating and active, she is able to wait until you can see a vet with guinea pig experience tomorrow.

Nobody tell Rosie, but we have a vet appointment tomorrow evening.

I've become quite the topic of conversation at my new workplace. The new colleague who leaves early for an important appointment?

Not a child. Not a spouse.
A guinea pig🐭

I seem to be the proud owner of the office's most discussed pig!

Wishing you and Rosie all the best. I hope that she is still hanging in there the same as the weekend.

Hope all goes well at the vets.
At least you are modelling a perfect piggy parent for your new colleagues.
Maybe they will want guinea pigs too

I hope Rosie’s vet appointment goes ok tomorrow.

Lovely that you are able to leave work early. I hope your new colleagues are now learning about how guinea pigs are VIPs (very important pets).

I believe we found some excellent new vets for us!

Everything was very quick and efficient. Although Rosie was savagely fat shamed (called a baked loaf), the girls both received lots of loving and snacks. Pigs were very polite and brave, Lily gave the vet some kisses and the vet gave them back, too!

X-rays were fine, we do suspect it to be old age and arthritis. We are starting with a course of painkillers and some new supplement that includes glucosamine + other good stuff. I will report back to the vets in about 5 days and then we make a plan going forward.

We shall see! Rosie is still very happy and perky. I just want her to be comfortable ❤️

Dear Rosie

The Nasty Vet Man/Lady called you a baked loaf and fat shamed you?!?!?!?!? How VERY rude of them and how VERY dare they! You are perfect in my eyes. Nothing wrong with a larger lady - there's more of you to love and snuggle up to. If I had gone as your pawholder I would have stood in solidarity with you and nipped the vet for calling you fat I certainly wouldn't have given him kisses like Lily did.

The GPU does not encourage nipping (that's the job of GPFANS) but sometimes it is necessary as in this case where you were rudely liked to a loaf of bread. Next time you see the Nasty Vet Man/Lady give them a good nip as that will teach them not to call you fat!

Dear Sir Saxon Canute,

Thank you for your support in this most serious matter.
I was indeed compared to a baked loaf by the Vet Lady. However, after much reflection (and a snack), I have decided against nipping them.

Firstly, I have never bitten anyone. Secondly, my sister Lily has spent years teaching me proper guinea pig etiquette, and she would be terribly disappointed if I started behaving like an uncultured hamster (with respect).

I shall respond to this slander with a look of profound disappointment and a demand for extra coriander, for the loaf allegations are entirely unproven. No evidence has been presented beyond my general resemblance to a particularly handsome sourdough. Wait..

Hey Rosie,
glad you're doing better.
Well, I'm not a hamster and certainly not an uncultured one, but being called fat that's a big NO NO.
A good nip would have been the appropriate reaction. Even Vicky thinks so and she is usually the pacifist pig around here (not counting Pino because he is pretty useless).

Having had a few really lovely hamsters and having known some feisty ones who were nonetheless loveable, I do feel I need to stick up for them 🐾 Once you get to know them, they are just as loveable as a dog or cat or guinea pig. They are nocturnal because their eyes are adapted to extremely low light conditions, not because they are anti social and given good taming input can be very friendly pets. It's just not always easy to see them unless you are a night owl ❤️ They need the same input and friendship as any other pet.

Oh for sure! My brother and I had hammies when we were younger, one each. Mine was quite cheeky, a fantastic boy, lived to old age and was a wonderful friend.

I was poking fun since my pigs get called hamsters 80% of the time, maybe it translated wrong c:

That's fine, but hamsters need all the positivity and good publicity they can get. They are one of the most sadly neglected pets, caged and forgotten about because people don't always realise how nice they can be, or how demanding they are. They risk being stereotyped as uncultured by accident whereas they just need understanding and lots of patience. People give up on them so easily. It's very sad. The classified ads are full of unwanted hamsters.

I had hamsters for many years and they were the most adorable pets.
I only had one with a problem and she was a PAH rescue.
She was clearly so stressed I took her to give her a quiet and peaceful environment but she was quite aggressive.
It does make me mad when animals are caused so much stress it damages them.
