I have just got my 6 year old Rupert back from the vets. I took him in yesterday as he had what I thought was a burst abscess on his back end. The vet diagnosed 2 ~Trichofolliculoma abscesses. He said he would have preferred to operate to remove them but as they were so near Rupert's anus the only other option was putting Rupert under anaesthetic and squeezing the pus out of the abscesses. So I left Rupert last night and picked him up this afternoon after his treatment.
Rupert had been suffering from impaction. So his bum was frequently swollen so because of this I missed the abscess until one burst. That's when I took him to the vet.
Rupert has been prescribed 0.3 mls of metacam twice a day and .0.5 mls of septrin twice a day.
Has anyone had any experience of this. Any advise welcome.

Rupert has been prescribed 10 mls of metacam twice a day and 5 mls of septrin twice a day.
Has anyone had any experience of this. Any advise welcome.

Are you sure that it is not 0.1 ml of metacam and 0.5 ml of septrin?

Bless you, I don't have experience of this but wanted to send Rupert my well wishes. Its difficult at that age to make a decision and I know I have opted for no surgeries for Peter because of his age and I don't think he will manage it anymore. Hoping Rupert makes a speedy recovery and his bum isn't too sore!

George had an abcess on his back before. At first it was thought it was a fatty lump by the vet due to movement. But a few months later it got a bit 'fuller' . The day he was going to the vets it partially opened so the vet drained everything out and shaved/cleaned the area. We cleaned it daily and luckily it healed. I believe we had antibiotics too.

My mum has had a guinea pig with an abcess too and that burst. The vet removed it surgically though but there were no complications thankfully, just had to make sure he didn't interfere with the stitches which was the most difficult part.

Thanks for the support. I have attached some photos that show the size of the area which is in a really sensitive part of Rupert's bum.
He has eaten and taken his medicine this morning. He is also pooping so that is a good sign.CAM00202.webp CAM00203.webp

I'm glad you followed that picture with a head shot. Have you to flush the wound?

I dealt with an abscess once it certainly wasn't pleasant hope your little one gets better soon!

Oh poor Rupert - at least he doesn't know we are all looking at his bottom...
Glad he is quite perky today. Do you have to clean out the abscess from now on?
At least you know that there must have been good reasons not to remove the whole lump because we share the same vet and they are usually quick to whip a lump off if at all possible. Hope he keeps on mending. x

When I spoke to vet after the op I asked if I needed to flush the wound but was advised not to do any flushing or deal with any impaction. Rupert goes back Friday morning for check up.

Yes @lauraboara I did think twice about posting! But I got a shot of the handsome end as well when he was eating. He is a bit brighter today but not as keen to take his supreme recovery He's had some kale this afternoon.

Rupert is not doing so well @lauraboara
He was at the vets 8.30 am today and the vet gave him an injection of metacam for the pain and Zantac to help with his poops.
I have been given emeprid to give Rupert 0.5ml twice daily.
The vet also prescribed Supreme Science Recovery PLUS with Vit C this time.
When we came back from the vets I tried syringe feeding him again, but he is still not interested. I have managed to get some in him.
I had to leave him and when I returned about 3hr later he was still in the same position. There was one tiny poop and he hadn't eaten any hay or veg that I had left near him,
I have given him some more recovery but again he doesn't really cooperate.
If he does not improve I will take Rupert back tomorrow.

sorry to read this thread Val, poor lad. Have you tried him with some mushed up pellets? Sometimes they take it easier than specific recovery food. Sending you hugs and Rupert lots of love x

@worried val of york do you have any grass available to feed poor little rupert? When my boy went off his food after a barium study was done on him, I was struggling to get syringe food down him.. He wouldn't eat his veg either. My partner got him some grass and he gobbled it all down and then shortly after that he got his appetite back and started eating as normal. I'm not saying this will work for rupert but it's worth a try?

Thanks Lee but I have tried him with mushed pellets but he turns his head away. It is heartbreaking.
I will try him with some grass @Sian25 It's a good idea just to get something other than syringe food inside him.

If I have a very difficult pig to feed, I try little and often. As long as he is still swallowing he hasn't given up. It could be the antibiotics putting him off his food this happened with my Fred.

So sorry to hear Rupert is not doing so well. Is he eating any veg or hay on his own? Grass is a good plan and sometimes soft herbs like fennel fronds or corriander will tempt ill ones? They also do get used the syringe feeding so sometimes you just have to keep having a go and they will eventually work out they feel better if some goes in the mouth and tummy!
What did vet say about the actual lump or is something else going on?
Everything crossed for you and Rupert.

I give him Pro C. and the vet prescribedSupreme Science Recovery Plus with Vit C.
I do think that him not pooping is the problem. His bum where the abscesses were aspirated is quite swollen.

hii had a male piggie with a big abcess on his scrotal area drained as an emergency, flushed twice a day with hibisrub solution, ben had septrin 0.7 mls bd,i found he liked parsley, and diarolite ...has electrolites in it.critical care given every 2 to 3 hours,we continued this for ten days, ben still did not eat on his own, septrin can deplete the appitite, that was stoppedthe wound area was very clean.then ben began to eat.it is a very emotional time, but you gain a very close bond with Rupert.I hope he makes progresstake each day as it comes.I'm sure you are being the best carer,i even liquidized his favorite vegetables and he had this syringe fed, which he cooperated very well to take.

I went to bed at 4 am with Rupert in box by bed. I had been syringing smaller quantities of Supreme Science as per earlier advice. I left a bit of hay in the box with Rupert. At 7 am I woke upand tentatively checked the box. Rupert was breathing and was eating hay. When I looked more closely there were lots of little poops. There were signs Rupert had been moving as there were poops in different areas of the small box.
He has since had more syringe food and eaten some hay. I have given him his morning medication of Metacam, Septrin and Emeprid.
Thanks for info @eileen I will be trotting off to Tescos again to get parsley. I bought a whole range of different veg on Thursday to try and tempt Rupert but even his favourites didn't tempt him then. I don't know anything about diarolite. Would it react to any of the prescribed medication Rupert is taking? It is also reassuring to have some advice about length of recovery time involved. My vet has told me to keep cage fioor as clean as possible which I have done. But he also told me not to get involved with any flushing.
I will be keeping a close eye on Rupert today and up to now I have decided not to take him to vet today (but I will monitor situation).
The good news is Rupert is so much better than yesterday but he is still a very poorly little pig.
