Hi all, I was wondering whether anyone may be able to help - I’m wondering which saline solution is best to use for a nebuliser for piggies? Is a commerIal one OK to use? I can’t find much info about it! I’ve seen this one in Tesco but obviously I don’t want to give it to her without checking it’s the righ kind of saline solution first: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/260584123

Just a bit of backstory: I have a piggie who has struggled with long term mucus in her nose/chest from a former URI. We’ve (the vets and I) tried lots of medications and while the vet said she’s really healthy now other than having a noisy chest/nose, it might be good to try an nebuliser to help shift the mucus.

After lots of research, I’ve finally ordered a nebuliser that I feel happy with, along with some premade F10, as recommend by the vet. The vet also suggested that a saline solution on its own would be good to use, and I’m inclined to try that first just to loosen up the mucus that’s there, but i stupidly didn’t ask more about what kind of saline solution is best and now I’m a bit confused!

Thank you so much for any help!

Hi

One saline is as good as any other; the shop ones are all sterile. It is a very mild antiseptic.
You can even make your own at home if you wish to by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into half a pint/250 ml of boiled cooled water; knowing that can come in handy in an emergency.
First Aid Kit: Easily available non-medication support products for an emergency

Some members have had more success with F10 antiseptic; I hope that they can give you practical advice on that if you would like to use something a bit stronger but still safe.

Thank you so much, @Wiebke! That’s soooo helpful and just what I wanted to know - thank you! ☺️ I’ve been to pick up some saline solution since reading this and I’m giving it a try now. :)

That’s also really good to know that you use can use the salt water as well as an emergency back up! I’ve ordered some F10 so I’ll give her a try on it when it comes.

Thank you so much, again!

My piggy, Enid, had respiratory issues and I used to nebulise her with saline. You can buy 500ml bottles of Eye Wash saline on amazon for £5 for 2 bottles. If you buy the F10 you dilute it in saline 1:250 so that's 2ml F10 into a 500ml bottle of saline. I had to nebulise Enid for 5 months before she passed so happy to help if you have anymore questions.

Thank you so much, @MildredMaudeandEnid - that’s so all so useful to know. I’m finding it tricky as there’s not too much info out there about it. The bottle I managed to get hold of is an eye wash saline, so that’s so reassuring that I’m along the right lines!

I was wondering what the measurements would need to be of F10/saline - thank you! The F10 I’ve ordered is ready to use - do you know whether that would that still need to be diluted or can it go straight into the neb?

Can I also please ask how often you used the nebuliser with your lovely Enid? :) I’ve just started with Floss and have done twice a day for 2 days now with the saline. I’m expecting the F10 to arrive today, so I’ll switch to that and see how we go. I was aiming for twice a day for a week and then dropping it down to once, but I really don’t want to over do it. We do have an appointment at the vet early next week, so that’s putting my mind at rest but it’s difficult to know what to do for the best!

If it's the ready mixed F10 then you shouldn't have to mix it with the saline. I had the concentrated stuff so I diluted it down.

I used to nebulise Enid twice a day for 20 minutes each time. Are you just using a pet carrier as a chamber? I made a chamber out of a plastic storage box which worked well. There are videos on YouTube of how to do it.

Fantastic - thank you!

Thank you - I’ll continue with twice a day. :) Yeah, I was using her carrier but I’ve managed to get my hands on a plastic box now - I couldn’t find any in any shops for some reason! I found one today though, I’ve drilled holes in and she’s actually in it at the moment. :) Seems much better as I can see her properly while she’s in there.
