I am from China and my guinea pig Kaneko is suffering from fibrous osteodystrophy. She is two years old and one month old. Because I am studying abroad, my mother take care of her. At the beginning of the month, I found that she ate less and stopped eating her favorite bell pepper.

But there are few hospitals in China where guinea pigs can be treated, even in Shanghai. My mother made an appointment at a hospital three days ago, at first we thought it was just flatulence, but after the DR Examination, it was found that her bones had appeared holes.

My worst fear had come true, my worst fear of this attack since I knew she was a satin guinea pig. I did not know about the existence of satin guinea pigs before buying her, and only after raising her for a period of time did I know that satin guinea pigs may suffer from such terrible genetic diseases. I can only pray, pray that she is lucky, but now it seems that prayer is of no use, genetic disease is a matter of chance.

My poor girl now weighs only 647g and is still suffering from severe flatulence and eating difficulties after three days in the hospital. I still have more than a month to go back to China, but now I don't even know if I will see her for the last time.

Very sorry to hear your piggy is not well. Satins are so beautiful, but can have this awful syndrome. @Eriathwen has lots of satin experience. I hope your piggy responds to treatment and gets better ❤️

I'm so sorry your satin has developed osteodystrophy, has your vet given you painkillers for him? This condition is excruciatingly painful, at the very least you would want meloxicam and gabapentin at palliative doses (your piggy would be consideredpalliative unfortunately, sparing the kidneys long term is less of a concern than relieving pain), however you may need to add a 3rd or 4th painkiller if the first 2 are not enough to control the pain.

That being said, if the jaw is effected, it may be that no matter how much pain relief is given, mechanically the jaw just won't be able to function properly, and bones will be much more at risk of fractures.

If your piggy doesn't begin to eat normally and maintain weight when given proper pain relief, it may be in his best interest to consider euthanasia, as passing from inability to eat and gastric stasis is quite an unpleasant way to go sadly.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Kaneko has an appetite and wants to eat, but she chews very hard. My vet said that we can only rely on artificial feeding, and my mother plans to bring her home the day after tomorrow to start artificial feeding. She is a timid pig, in a strange environment will be very nervous and silent, hoping that she can feel better in the familiar home.😢

I am so sorry to read your thread. I will hold you & your mother & Kaneko in my thoughts

I am so very sorry you have lost your dear Kaneko, she was loved each and every day and she will take that love with her as she crosses the Rainbow Bridge 🌈

I’m so sorry. Sending you hugs. Popcorn high over the bridge Kaneko. ❤️

So very sorry that you lost Kaneko.
To pass away enfolded in love is a precious gift.
Hold onto your memories of your beautiful girl and be gentle with yourselves as you grieve.
