hi - I'm new to the forum ! I've found so much helpful info and now I have a question of my own.
My lovely guinea pig (male 8years old ) is pretty sick at the moment with a URI. He has now been put on Septrin and I'm giving critical care powder via syringe, started today . I'm wondering if I should give the anti biotics right before his food or before ? Finally his breathing has settled after 4 weeks / 3 visits to the vet - the last one of which was Friday when I ASKED for Septrin as I had read on here that it is best for URI's (he has 10 days of Baytril with no improvement ) it's a long story but I feel we have not had xompetent care from our vet. ANY advice is gratefully received .. I know he is an old boy but he has always been very healthy and if he had been given septrin in the first place , I'm pretty sure he would be better now.

I tend to give ab's normally around 20 mins after food, just because of the routine I am in with them. Where a bouts are you located .we may be able to suggest a cavy savy vet in your area.

Welcome to the forum and lots of healing vibes to your piggy

Hi & Welcome to our friendly forum.
I think first off I would change my vet.
This forum is so good, you always find out about the meds here, it's nice to go to the vet, knowing what you need, because X amount of people have recommended it on this forum, & can confirm that it works.
I hope your lad is on the mend now.

How is he eating and pooing? Has the vet listened to his chest for sounds of fluid etc? The septrin seems to be picking him up yes?

Hi, so sorry to hear your boy is poorly. I had one with suspected pneumonia recently and was told that even if the antibiotics worked there could still be problems resulting from scarring on the lungs.

The first step to take though is having a vet you trust. Some are normal vets who are very good with piggies and some are exotics specialists. Not all exotics are good with piggies though so try the vet locator. If there are none near you then perhaps you could ask for a referral to your nearest specialist?
