My vet didn't speak to him which was a bit annoying. She called a woman from her old practice that I realised last night is a vet I've had a bad experience with so I'm less happy than I was about it all.

Yes I have asked about ultrasounds, I was told however that there is too much in there to actually see anything. I don't know how true that is.

As he's known for being a wee bitey I don't know how they'd feel about that. I'd be more than happy to hold him though, I know what he's like :))

We changed our Vet Practice when enquiringly about the cost to neuter my boys and our Vet quoted more than twice the amount! Also struggled with their lack of bedside manner! New Vets are great! Can therefore empathise if you’ve dealt with some one you didn’t have a positive experience with.

Our initial thought was that it's an abscess and treated for it and it seemed to go... But now we're not sure. He has no visible or feelable lumps down there so I don't know?

He's had troubles ever since his neuter :(

I've been through so many vets over the years! That one was one of the worst unfortunately :(

abscesses are rather difficult to get rid of, any sign of infection however small, will allow it to spread &grow again. My Grace had a drainage hole left in her cheek, to allow the mess to come out & then i was flushing the hole with Baytril (some members have used hibiscrub, saline solution etc for flushing).
the hole was stitched open (marsupialised) to stop it from healing over too quickly & trapping the infection inside again.
Abscesses need to heal from the inside, out. Grace's looked grim but she's nearly grown the hair back now & all looks healthy :)
Grace was on zithromax for 3wks

That's the difficulty we're having, as what ever is causing it is inside of him it's not easy to see/diagnose/flush. I was previously flushing his anus out with a saline solution from the vets which he protested against!

We have some Hibiscrub right now to try and clean it but I don't know how deep it goes.

would an Xray or ultrasound scan show up any pockets of pus? if they do , could your vet check & remove or lance the pocket to allow flushing? although i can understand you would be very wary of any surgery again :(

Just trying to catch up on the forum and saw this thread. Hugs to you and sweet Iggy and I really hope you can get to the bottom (no pun intended) of what is wrong x

I partly know how you feel. It's horrible seeing you piggie mistreated by someone who you put your and their trust in. My poor lad Pedro visit to a vet resultsd in a very very angry owner :hb:. In the space of ten mins she tried to pick him up by the scruff neck he squeaked in pain. she taken a sample by needle dropped 2 before giving up. Then sat him on edge table to show us how to clip his nails he wiggled cos the stupid woman gave no support to his bottom and 1st cut sliced into his toe resulting in blood over him. kath me vet. i put him into basket and poor sod was very very stressed. We left sayin you WILL hear from us to complain. We did. Thankfully he was ok but I felt awful. Poor Lad. :bye:

That is awful! Poor Pedro! Hope he never went there again!
 
I would really wonder if it is possibly and abscess the is draining through the anus.. the stinky, cream-cheese discharge made me think of that. Abscess pus does stink and is that consistency. It would explain pain on passing poos. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the best way to diagnose this would be. They are so tiny for a scope and it may be hard to see on imaging. If he passes any more of that discharge, you may want to save it in a container and show the vet... any vet/owner who has smelled an infected wound won't soon forget it and it may help with diagnosis.

I don't know whether it would show up? It's just in a difficult place to open as it seems to be inside his anus or pellet sack... Thing.

Bloody hell! What a poor little man, I'd probably bite a vet for doing that to one of my babies!

That's been my thought for a while, it's the only thing I could think it was. He's also finding weeing painful as well as pooing.

Yes diagnosis is the hardest part right now, we're just kind of treating it as an abscess and hoping for the best at the moment.

There's no need to save any, poor lad always has plenty of nasty discharge to show the vet on our visits, plenty of smell too! He's had this on and off for about 6-7 months I think?
 
So this antibiotic is called Co-Trimoxazole, which I've never heard of before? He's on 0.44 once a day?

It really does, he's been better since being back on the metacam but he hates this new antibiotic. Even more than baytril! It smells quite nice, it's banana flavoured. He went berserk in anger when he had it though lol.

Just googled it as I dont remember hearing of that one, turns out that one of the trade names for it is bactrim- now I have heard of that one on here before.

Looks like it treats bacterial infections, especially suitable for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections &pneumonia.
Can be used for travellers diarrhea-but one of the side effects is also diarrhea, so might ae handy to make sure u have some probiotics handy to help the gut flora ?

Thanks! What a silly name for it haha. I have some Pro C for him, he likes it too. If he gets diarrhoea I'm going to freak out! X

Thanks for your reply! Yes I'm rather disappointed too, but the vet that my vet consulted with (on the recommended vets page) once prescribed tramadol for an itchy scab with one of my piggies so I'm not exactly surprised. She doesn't seem that experienced with pigs and not exactly cavy savvy imo.

Apparently Zithromax wouldn't work on this particular bacteria...? Even though we don't know what bacteria it is.

Should I give it twice a day? God he hates it, I think it's the banana nasty added that he doesn't like.

I'll see how we go for the 2 weeks given, if there's no/little improvement I'm going to try a vet in Paddock Wood for a second opinion. It's frustrating as it's draining my vet fund and we're not getting anywhere :(
 
What exactly does it say on the label? Can you give me all the info regarding the strength of the medication etc. If this is paediatric septrin (which is the banana flavoured one) then even giving twice a day will still be under-dosing.

Unfortunately I've just left for work so I don't have the info with me, I think it said something in 3 letters (might have been PED?) and then 40? I can look properly when I'm home later.

He's about 677 grams and they had that info when I was prescribed it... It's made me a bit angry tbh because if that's the case then I've paid all this money (although money is no object when it comes to the health of my pigs I'm not exactly rich) and we're not going to get anywhere AGAIN when this woman is meant to be savvy. My vets are out of their depth a bit I think but this other vet (that my vet seeked advice from on this) is on the forums recommended vets and I really can't understand why. I decided to give her another chance but now I wish I hadn't.
 
Let me know when you get home. It’s so frustrating. I don’t mind paying for veterinary knowledge but when they clearly don’t have any, then it’s so wrong. I just wish you were close enough to come and see Simon or Kim Maddock. They’re on holiday until the 30th, but if you’re not getting anywhere once they’re back, I really think it would be worth the trip.

I've asked my mum to text it to me, it says co-trimoxazole suspension 40/200ml?

It is frustrating, I'd pay anything to make him healthy again but it upsets me when vets pretend they are specialists when they aren't. I don't want other people being tricked into this, is there someone I can contact to have her taken off the recommended vets list? This is 2/2 bad experience now.

One of our lovely forum members PMd me recommending a vet from Paddock Wood for specialist problems so I think I'll pop along there first as I'm more likely to get to them easier, but if I have no luck I will find a way to Simon & Kim if it kills me. I can't bear to see him in pain like this, stinking of infection and looking at me with such sadness... It's breaking my heart more and more every day.

Is it 40mg/200mg per 5 ml?

It doesn't say, it just says 100mls 1 of 1 after that which I presume is how much they've given me?
