Serious Note Now, Iggy's Condition.

So it went well at the vets, met Kim first and then Simon and they were both wonderful. Iggy had a thorough examination and Kim was puzzled so suggested having some more X-rays, some anaesthetic and try to get a urine sample, blood sample and flush his urinary tract to check for sediment or fissions (any holes in the urinary tract) to which I agreed.

When I collected him I met Simon who again was very thorough and went through his X-rays with me so I knew what I was seeing. I was very proud to hear that he has a perfect anatomy and is apparently "very tidy for a boy"! We had no stones, nothing showing up on X-ray and his willy is good (and tidy!) and his bottom looks healthy again. There are no fissions to show during the 3-4 flushes he had and no leakage.

Right now we're treating it as a sterile cystitis (no pain when feeling bladder so it might be quite deep?) with sulfatrim for 2 weeks but we have a months supply so if he doesn't improve I can continue til the bottle is gone and see where we are then.

Hopefully this works because I don't think doing the train is a good idea for him, the tube terrified him and I felt awful.
 
Aww I really feel for you Cavy, when no positive answers are there. You must be very fed up & low but you have got iggy the best care & you cant do any more. Hugs coming your way.

Thank you, yes it's still a bit weird not knowing what's been up with him but I'm glad that my biggest fear has been ruled out.

I love my little boy, I just hope he's on the mend but I'm just so unsure by nature now.
 
This reminds me very much of my little Patrick. He cried horrendously anytime he urinated we did regular xrays (monthly), no stones ever showed. I managed him with painkillers. It turned out that Patrick did have a stone but it was so small it was never found until one Xray after many.

Patrick had a bladder operation although there was further complications as his stone was in the ureter he got through the surgery. Once recovered he was able to stop his painkillers and recovered well and the crying stopped.

If the crying doesn't clear up with the antibiotics I would most definitely recommend precautionary Xrays without them we'd never have found the stone.

Thanks, would the bladder stone have been flushed out if there was one there? He had 3-4 flushes while he was with Simon so it should have bee dislodged if there was one surely? I hope anyway!

He's perkier than he was before that's for sure! It's been lovely to see him being normal and bothering the girls, talking our ears off something mad too!

Yea the X-rays were amazing, I'd imagine we would have seen something if it were there. Fingers crossed this is it, his blood comes back perfect and he's on the mend! He's been very good at taking his new medicine which has been fab! Xx
 
Does anyone know when you should realistically be expecting pain when urinating to cease during a course of sulfatrim?

He's still squealing with pain when he wees, there's not a lot of change there. I'm aware that we haven't been on the antibiotics that long but I was hoping it would be giving him some comfort by now, especially as Simon wanted me to lower Iggy's metacam dose. I've lowered it just to 0.35 but I don't want him to be in pain.
 
Lewis was on septrin for 3 weeks and stopped making a noise when weeing after 10 days.he had been neutered only 3 weeks previously.i would put the metacam back to dose on previously,maybe ring simon in the morning for advise.:hug:

Okay thank you! That gives us a bit of a goal. Well he was on 0.4 which didn't really touch the pain anyway, but apparently is high for his weight.

I'd love to get him off all the meds soon!
 
Is he crying with every wee? Are you absolutely sure all the Sulfatrim is going in? Because the syringe is quite wide, I have seen people struggle to get it far enough back into the mouth and therefore a lot is coming back out. Just a thought!

I don't know if it's every wee as I'm at work, but when I'm home in the evening he does it fairly frequently.

Yea I've been putting the syringe a lot further in so as far as I'm aware it's all going in. I've also been giving him his critical care mix straight afterwards so it goes down easier. As far as I'm aware it's all going in but I'll be more mindful when I do his meds tonight to make sure.

I guess it's still early days, I just hate hearing him struggle.

Well his weeing is certainly better than it was at its worst but he's still having a screech when he goes so not quite there yet!

The girls are hating me haha they're still having their meds but it looks like it's clearing up nicely :)

Yea it's been mad! I'm juggling all this whilst being very short staffed at work so roll on 2018! :))

Do you have any hols coming up or have you had to put them aside being so short-staffed?

Well I was meant to have some time off over the next few weeks but they're not gunna happen haha!

Luckily I won't lose them as they will roll them onto next year as it's not my fault, extra long holidays next year! :D
 
Just had Kim leave a message and phoned back and spoke to Simon. Iggy's bloods have come back and apart from a bit of inflammation (probably caused by cystitis) he's not got anything to worry about!

Got another weeks worth of his sulfatrim and then I can hopefully wean him off the metacam completely! Fingers crossed! :D
 
Iggy's having a serious shriek rn while trying to wee which is a punch in the gut :(

I'm now about to put him half in some warm water to help him go (he only peed a tiny amount with a bunch of screeching so I think he's got more in him). I've also put his metacam up again by a little bit.

I don't really know why I'm posting, I guess I'm just really disappointed that he's back to this again. I know it's only been just over a week with the antibiotics but it's horrible seeing him like this :(

Yes he's definitely getting all his medicine, that's what I don't understand :( I presume I can't give him a bigger dose...

I don't think he squeak peed at all yesterday and now it's super bad tonight but I don't know why. It's like taking a step back...

Well when I spoke to Simon a few days ago he said to give it a week and see how he's reacting to the antibiotics. I know it's only been a little over a week since we started it so I'm sure it's just taking a bit of time but it's just horrible for the time being.

Nothing has changed, Simon did say that it could be stress related too. I don't know what could be causing him stress :( Tonks was in season but as they're separated by grids I don't know if that would have done anything?
