Shimmer and Saffron

I tip my hay into the garden bin. So far there’s no problem with the bin collectors.
Summer is a bit tricky when there’s more garden waste
 
I must make some space for a compost bin. That would be such a good way to use the waste. I guess the newspapers would still have to be put in the rubbish but it would be less bulky without all the hay.
 
Newspaper can go in too. And your food waste and cardboard.

Not onions or potatoes or mushrooms I think. Have a google. I didn’t like putting egg shells in mine as they take longer to break down. Or tea bags. Think you can rip them and just put in the tea.

I got some fabulous compost.

Ooh does the hay fully break down? My girls get through a tonne of hay so wasn’t sure if it’d have the right ratio of greens/browns to fully compost…
 
I've got 5 compost bins and a pile. I do have a lot of piggies though. If you don't get enough green in with the hay it does take longer to break down but it goes eventually. I don't put paper or cardboard in my bins as it seems to take longer to break down than the hay.
I have a couple of gardening neighbours who are glad of some hay for their bins.

There's a rumour in Germany that having guinea poo in the compost really as in REALLY attracts slugs. Do you find that? Where I used to live we had more than enough slugs w/o adding guinea poo to either the compost pile or the enclosed garden compost bin, not sure what to call that in English. We also had a wheelie bin just for compost that got emptied along with all the other bins. Usually I managed to get piggy poo and shavings in there, but some hay in the enclosed compost bin, which was mine.

No I don’t get slugs in the compost just lovely wriggly worms

If you have friends with gardens they will take some of the compost I'm sure. It should be high quality 👍
 
Poor Shimmer was breathing in a bubbly kind of way which makes me think she could have an upper respiratory tract infection.

I have moved them into the conservatory, well lean to really. It isn't exactly tropical but has less of a draught than the shed. They have snuggle safes, loads of hay, blankets on the cage and hides.

A vet visit will happen when I can get a lift. As soon as possible. Poor little love.

Starlight is appreciating having an open space to run round in. No more cage stand to go under!

I can't wait to bond him and Moondust. It will be great when they can share the whole shed and run.
 
Shimmer sounds perfectly normal now!

They have both been sun bathing over the last couple of days. It is lovely having them inside, even though it is still rather cold in the conservatory. At least it is waaay warmer than in the shed.

I fixed bubble wrap over two of the shed windows today as one of the windows won't close. Shed is rather old and the wood has swollen in the rain.

As you’ve moved them into the conservatory I’d keep them there til Springtime as they’ll have adjusted to a different temperature -
Sounds like your shed might be draughty ……
 
Yes they will definitely be indoors until the Spring now.

Ideally I would like them to have a good sized hutch in the front garden (north facing) for those blazing hot summer days that we seem to be getting these days.
 
Took some more pics of the wonderful Shimmer and Saffron. They are lovely. Shimmer still comes towards me for food and Saffron still listens for munching sounds before whizzing over to Saff Saff and nicking her food!

She actually went and got some of her own food today!

They had some rainbow chard today which went down very well. This time Saffron played her usual trick!
