Hi, Jasper, one of my guinea Pigs has gotten ill, looks like kidney stones or old age, as is pretty old now and losing condition. He was a rescue and is a very anxious guinea pig so I am just making him comfortable and happy for the time he has left. However today I noticed some really odd behaviour between all 3 of my guineas. They are all uneautered boars and don't like to cuddle or really be near each other. But today I noticed Jasper was staying really close to the other two, as in he was snuggling his head into them or resting against them. And my other two guineas just let him (which is really weird as they normally don't let each other get that close) and they were cuddling together in their hidey house. Not sure if they can sense something wrong with Jasper? Or why Jasper won't leave their sides? Not sure if this is anything anyone's experienced before with an unwell pig?

Hello, welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear Jasper.

Yes, piggies know when other piggies are poorly and will often provide comfort and support. Cookie used to lick Treacles eyes when she had Lymphoma it was very sweet to see.

Has Jasper seen a vet are they on pain medication?

Could you add your location to your profile as it helps us tailor any advice if ever needed to your geographical location

Welcome again
Lee

I had this happen when one of my piggies hurt his leg. People say the others can sense death, but I've no evidence.
Do you think you can pop to the vet to get some painkillers. They may not be able to help him, but if you get painkillers, he'll pass painless

Hi & welcome to our friendly forum

Because Jasper had a very difficult beginning to life he now has very bad anxiety and I feel taking him to the vets would really stress him out and maybe make his condition worse, however I can phone them and see what they suggest. He isn't showing any signs of pain, he's just lost condition, very tired and drinks a lot. But we are keeping a close eye on him. But right now he is still eating and asking for food. But thank you for the advice I just wanted to know if it was a common thing that happened with other guineas. :)

Cuddling up is a sign that Jasper is not well; he is lucky in having loving and supportive company from his mates! It is normal behaviour for a functional group.

As long as he is still begging, he still has the will to live and his time has not yet come. You will know when that happens. It is always a difficult stage when you come closer to that moment and you have to face up to and the various aspects connected to it; it is always a heart-breaking time as you are now in fact starting the grieving process.

Sorry you are in a difficult situation.
Holding you in my thoughts.
@Wiebke is right that you are already beginning to grieve.
Jasper is lucky to have you to make whatever time he has left comfortable.

How old is Jasper? Vet trips are stressful for most animals sadly but they're worth it. I have a one eyed piggy who's a very timid little lady. Although she hates the vet trips she gets over them very quickly.

I'd definitely recommend the vets, especially if it could be a stone as they're very painful. They hide it very well but if he's sleepy and such he may be in pain.

Have you been syringe feeding him or has he lost weight? It may be that he's not eating enough if he's losing condition as well.

Hope he gets better soon!

JASPER UPDATE
sadly Jasper died peacefully in his sleep this morning. Only last night he was still squeaking at me for food and a couple days before he was running round on the grass. Thank you for your suggestions however I feel this was the best way for him to go as he was in a comfortable space with his two bestfriends. He’s had a difficult life but I’m glad his last 2 years were happy.

I am very sorry that Jasper hasn't made it, but he has been able to go peacefully.

I'm so sorry for your loss. He was an adorable little guy. I'm glad he was able to enjoy his last days and pass peacefully at home. No one could ask for more than that. ((HUGS.))

What a touching thread. How wonderful that he was able to get support and comfort from his friends during his final hours.

Rest in peace Jasper.

Glad Jasper had you and his two buddies, to lean on. I have tears in my eyes, just writing this. Those tiny little creatures, just take our hearts, you were a caring parent.
