Skinny Guinea Problems...

I have been looking at the web site and it is wonderful. They do so much for the animals. I found this information.

Pet Shop Complaints
I’d like to complain about the conditions or treatment of animals in a pet shop.
If you witness or suspect animal cruelty taking place, we suggest the following:
1. Contact us. Please provide us with the name and address of the Pet Shop. A phone number would be preferable. Please provide pictures if possible.
2. Print a copy of the animal rights laws here, and speak to the Pet Shop patrons about how they are treating the animals, and that it is against the law.

This means you can report that awful man and something can be done!

Please read the thread
Me and my silly ideas...
As we are trying come up with ways to help animals in egypt

Is there nobody you can report that disgusting man to for mistreating the animals? Surely somebody would care? Why the hell is he working with them when he clearly hates them?
I wish there was someone who could confiscate all these poor animals from these disgusting, soulless beings.. They should be the ones in cages riddled with disease, hunger, and suffering. Here's a picture of what a "luxury" cage for kittens would look like in one of these stores, along with a few others... I can't find pictures of the cages I saw, which are a lot worse than these:

Shocking, I know ):
I doubt there is anybody to report this too if gov't trucks come around to shoot animals complained of by people. It seems a very harsh world there.
Exactly..
It is one made right here in Queensland, so doubt you'd have it there. It is called "Ostelin vitamin D liquid" and "Ostelin vitamin D liquid kids".

Hope you can get that berseem hay soon. Have read up a bit about it on the Internet. It seems likely that will be the only type of hay you will be able to get in Egypt. It is even internationally known as Egyptian hay! Egypt exports the seeds all over the world as apparently it is a valuable hay. It is a clover type hay so is not going to be as high in calcium as alfalfa (legume hay) but still higher than any grain/grass hays. In your situation the berseem will be better than no hay at all.

I'm not surprised the piggies love the green pellets as it will be some sort of compressed hay. So a step in the right direction. But you will need uncompressed hay as well as the piggies require those long strands.

Great to hear your piggies are getting along.

Yep, I was told so as well. Thanks ^_^

I have discovered this animal welfare organisation based in Egypt. They even talk about the authorities shooting animals. Please contact them to report the abuses you have seen.

That's a fantastic website. I'll definitely be reporting three certain shops..

I hope I'm able the convince the patron.. Those laws have been refused by the government, and the organization are currently in the process of creating a new legislation for animal rights. I don't think they'll have the hearts to cope, but perhaps if the S.P.A.R.E. in involved, things might take a turn for the best.

It is at least worth trying. I am so upset by those photos. Those poor animals. :(

It certainly is. Me too :/ They go through so much disease, pain, suffering, and trauma, that a quick death is actually a good thing for these poor ones ): I just discovered that the baby's a boar, and not a sow, but they seem to be getting along with each other so well recently, he's still afraid of Citrom a bit. Should I put him in the other cage with my sister's big boar, Sweetpea?

Oh no! I hope he has not got her pregnant. They can get a sow pregnant at three weeks. It is a good idea to introduce him to your sisters boar. This thread will advice you on how.
http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=76162

I highly doubt he's gotten her pregnant, he's awfully afraid and always cuddles next to her like a newborn pup would, but I've never seen him mounting or even attempting to mate with her. What would happen if she did get pregnant? :O And thank you ^_^ I'll give it a proper read now and introduce them

Pregnancy is very dangerous for guinea pigs. One in five die. You only have to read the sad stories on here to learn that. It is an awful thing to put a poor sow through especially one such as yours who has had such a poor start to her life. There are thousands of guinea pigs out there without homes so it is irresponsible to add to that. I am sure you do not want to put your little one through something that may kill her.

Done. They love each other already, and the pup seems far happier with Sweetpea than he was with Citrom ^_^ I cleaned my sister's cage and the fleece and towels are currently being dried. Sweetpea and his pup are in the sink now and I put food and water for them to eat and drink. They're so terribly adorable.. I just love how they interact with each other, and the sounds they make are priceless xD

It is lovely they are getting on so well. Have you contacted the animal charity to report the pet shop?

At the top of the Behaviour section of the forum are two stickys on boars that you will find helpful now that your sister has 2 boys!

At the top of the Pregnancy & Labour section of the forum are 3 stickys that will help should your girl be pregnant, although I hope she isn't.

I most certainly have ^_^ They even have their own Facebook page which is equally amazing. I always take Citrom out of the cage on a towel and keep petting her, she just squats there like an adorable, true little piggy, and purrs whenever I touch certain areas of her back :D I wonder if it's a bad purr, though >: I'm not very informed on the meanings of the sounds guineas make, but she seems genuinely happy, as well as scared. She ate through this tag on the piggy bed yesterday, as well, which worried me a bit but she doesn't seem sick at all. Is there any way I can get her to stop eating things she shouldn't be eating? xD Also, the pup and Sweetpea are doing amazing, and the pup is actually eating normally for the first time, which makes me so glad.. And a sack of hay as well as more parsley are on the way ^_^

Thank you so much :) THey're getting along more than just perfect, Sweetpea loves his new pup and always lets him sleep inside the bucket we put for him then sleeps around him and keeps him warm and cozy. I'll have two perfect guinea houses for them ready soon, though <: My Grandmother will take care of that xD She loves animals just as much as I do, and also adores sewing things.

I am so glad you reported that awful man. There is no way of stopping a guinea pig from chewing everything in site! This web site will explain what guinea pig noises mean:
http://jackiesguineapiggies.com/guineapigsounds.html

It is wonderful to hear how well the boys are doing. It will be much better when the hay is delivered. Maybe you will have to always order in advance to ensure they can have it every single day.

Thanks! I tried listening to the recordings but they wouldn't play for some reason :/ And yep, I'm counting on that ^_^ There's a whole sack of hay on the way, and I'll always order it in advance. I really would love to find that metal hay-holder thingy used for guineas :( Any idea for a substitute for it?

I just put it in a pile on the floor of their home as they like to play in it and hide. It is so cute. You need a flash player I think for that site.

That sounds adorable :O That'll do, then <: Can I get thick tree branches from our garden for her to chew on, as well? I did the same for my hamsters xD

It depends on the tree as some are poisonous. I am not sure which ones.

I just wanted to say that it sounds like you are doing a great job with your piggies....and what very lucky piggies they are to have you find them.

You are making a great effort, jn fact more of an effort some people make over here with easy access to the right hay and food etc.

It makes me shiver to think now these poor babies would have ended up without you.

Well done :)

Hmmm, I'll try to find any wooden chew sticks at a pet store, then, though I've never seen them on sale :/ Would one of those dog treats work? I've read about many who used them for hamsters.

Thank you so much ^_^ It means a lot. It's my pleasure saving them, they're such adorable, cute, fun little animals, and it's great to know I've saved all the ones I could from that awful store. Unfortunately I can't save all piggies, or all of the other animals in that place. They seem to treat the animals according to their value there, and even the most expensive animals are put in filthy, small cages..
Citrom was just snuggled up and squatted next to me like an adorable, beautiful egg while I pet her a few minutes ago on her little towel, and I couldn't resist taking some pictures xD

She also seems to have gained quite some healthy weight ^_^ I'm proud :D

Oh she looks so much better! She has a shine to her hair. Wait until she has the hay and she will improve even more. I would not use dog treats for a guinea pig as they may not be vegetarian. The hay will help keep her teeth down. I have wooden cabins and mine like to grind their teeth against them.

I can't wait ^_^ I wonder if I can buy something like that here. Time will tell xD Your guinea in your avatar looks incredibly beautiful, btw ^_^

She is looking lovely! Mine like laying on towels as well.

Only branches of apple, pear, willow, beech or hazel are suitable for piggies to chew on as far as I can find out. Even stone bearing fruit trees like peaches and plums are no good.

Any pet shop wood chews/toys/accessories sold for any small animal like rabbits and hamsters is OK for piggies. Anything wooden sold for birds is OK too, just remove any parts not wooden and only give piggy the wood bits.

But they don't really need wood. The hay should be sufficient to keep their teeth trim.

Mine love chewing the cardboard inner tubes of loo paper and kitchen towel paper. These are safe for piggies and there is usually a plentiful supply of these about!

Sorry, forgot to add, make sure you cut the tubes in half so there is no danger of piggy's head stuck inside. When you get the hay, putting the hay inside the tubes is also heaps of piggy fun.

Thanks :D Just gave her one half of a paper towel tube and she's squatted next to me and won't stop chewing, so adorable! xD

Also split in half lengthwise, I'm not sure I made that clear. I give mine a whole loo cardboard roll cut in half lengthwise. For kitchen paper I cut the cardboard roll in half to make two then cut each half lengthwise. I'm not surpised she's happily chewing away!

Yep, that's what I've done ^_^ Thank you <: She seems very happy all of a sudden :O

yes its very important to keep their teeth in check, especially where you are as I dont imagine you have any vets over there that would be able to treat piggies with bad teeth....and a piggy with bad/overgrown teeth will gradually loose weight and die :...

Did you manage to get any hay from anywhere? sorry if you have already mentioned this..

Yes, I have :) And exactly, the same happens with bunnies as well as hamsters, I'm guessing :/ And most rodents in general. Though there's this new study claiming that guinea pigs are not in fact rodents xD Interesting.. She adores the hay, and she won't stop munching down on it and eating it like spaghetti, as well as the pup and Sweet Pea. As soon as I walked into the room with the hay, she started wheeking adorably xD I'm thinking of naming the pup Pooh Bear :D

Aww how cute. They sound so happy with their hay. My piggies get so excited with fresh hay and play in it. It is so important to them. Poo bear is a cute name!
