I'm off to the RSPCA tomorrow as I really want to give a home to 2 rescue's. Looking at the web site they have quite a few in need of a home right now. I don't mind how old they are, their sex or what they look like we just want to give 2 a new & loving home.

I've spent ages looking at hutches, already bought some toys for them. I'm going to take the hutch & run details with me tomorrow to check they are happy with it before I spend any money but it is bigger they ask for so I can't imagine it will be a problem. It's almost the same set up we have for our rabbit.

We have a rescue hamster but they didn't do a home check before we collected her, they did do a follow up visit though. I know this time they will be coming out which is fine & right :) I hope we don't have to wait too long as I know that if they have 2 waiting for a home that I can reserve I'll want them home ASAP.

I'm sooo excited, it's like being a little child again on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa to arrive LOL :))

I wonder how the Rabbit will feel about having 2 guinea pigs moving in next door LOL :)

Good luck! I have just adopted two lovely pigs from the RSPCA.

You will have to pass a home check once you have got your set-up delivered.
(They obviously have had bad experiences with people not buying what they said they would!)

With the paperwork and everything, the whole will take about 2-3 weeks, depending how quickly you can get your hutches.

I have had a good experience with my rehoming officer; but the suspense WAS rather killing me at times! All the more excitement when I finally could go and pick them up!

All the best to you! Hopefully, you can find some piggies that you KNOW are just the ones for you!

Thank you :) I'm going to see if I can get photos tomorrow if they have two I can reserve as my phone has a camera :)

We will be doing the hutch & run on Saturday morning, I need DH home to help put it together. Hopefully it wont be too long to wait & rescue than buy some so I'll just have to be patient :)

The advantage with a rescue is that they will match the owner with the piggies they have got. If you're a piggie-newbie, they will try and get you piggies that are used to being handled, whereas in a shop or from a breeder's most piggies haven't been handled much, and you don't know anything about their character.

That alone is worth the wait!

I agree :) I should say that whilst I'm saying I've never had them before that is true as an adult. As a child we had a much loved house piggie that was very spoilt, I was devastated when he died. He was called Charlie Brown, long haired & very affectionate. My mum at the time did all the work, I just played with it & gave endless cuddles. It was a long time ago now (I'm 39) so I'm considering myself a newbie with regards to their full care but I am at least confident at handling them :)

So you're like me - I've come back to having piggies as an adult (though they are my only pets). But I can now give those a home that need patience and love to bring them out of their shells.

Yes :) although we also have a Bichon Frise dog, a rescue hamster & Rabbit :) For a long time DH said no more pets but I joked about it last week & he said we have room for some more so buy a hutch & go to the RSPCA. Thankfully the only thing he insisted on was that it was a big as Rabbits so we will have 2 very spoilt piggies :)

I'm really pleased he changed him mind as I think it's important we all want them. All those comments about how adorable piggies are I made every time I got back from the pet sore clearly helped ;)

Not sure if this will work. I've tried to attach 2 pictures, they are from my local RSPCA site, if they are still available I'd love them, 3 year old females :)

They are absolutely gorgeous!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

They are so pretty - wish you well, hope you can have them.

Thank you. I would be surprised if they are still there. I'm not sure how often they update their web site & it doesn't say when they were added but I can live in hope :) If not I am sure any 2 they have will be just as adorable & just as well cared for by us in their forever home :)

Welcome to the forum, I am new to piggies, well have had them since February! We had rabbits, ferret, gerbils and a hamster as kids. I have really fallen for our piggies, they were for my sons, and they do give them cuddles and go and chat to them but I have rather taken over drooldrool

Thanks everyone :) I'm off to the RSPCA soon. I've just been on the phone to them & the 2 piggies I'm interested in (pictures earlier in this thread) are still available :)

They have asked me to take proof of address etc so they can reserve them for me & get the home check organised. They have 2 pairs of females & 3 males in need of a home.

I went to the pet store this morning & bought some more toys, tunnels etc for them. I'll buy the hutch & run later this week in time for the home check.

Keeping my fingers crossed and all the best for you!

I have reserved a male called Harry, he's about 9 months old & the reason given for him going to the RSPCA was 'lack of time'...

The RSPCA had tried to bond him without success & decided it was in his best interests to be rehomed alone. I did question them a lot about this as I know they are better kept in pairs & they really did give good answers & made it clear that rehoming them alone is a last resort but what is needed in a few cases.

He is really very timid, quite scared but for some reason he responded well to us so it just felt like the right decision. I know I really wanted 2, I did look at the other pairs but I kept going back to Harry.

So now I wait for a phone call so we can arrange the home check but they said it's normally quite quick as they do like them homed ASAP once someone has reserved them. We are welcome to go & visit Harry every day whilst we wait if we want to :)

He is adorable, I felt so sad though for the ones we left behind, I hope they too find loving homes soon.

Hopefully I've attached a photo of Harry.

adorable!! and CONGRATULATIONS!

have you considered another (or pair) so that he could communicate through the hutch? thats what mine are doing at the mo.. sorry! lol xx

I did think about it but we are running out of space (and there the extra cost of more hutches & runs etc). His hutch & run will be next to the rabbits, although I know that's not as good as being next to other guinea pigs.

What a sweetie! I am so glad for you that you have found the piggy that felt "right" for you! And, yes, unfortuately, there are some that are happier on their own.

Harry'll have a loving home, especially if he's close to your other pets and has lots of cuddling time. He'll come out of his shell in no time and will bond to you. Perhaps you can find him some piggy neighbours eventually, once you've got the bug - be warned: it's catching! Or have you considered having him as an indoors piggy, so he has lots of things going on around him, even when you're not playing with him, and a radio to keep him company when you're out?

Isn't it strange, tough, when you go to a rescue and come back with a completely different animal? It's happened to me a couple of times...

All the best for a speedy adoption!

Judging by your posts I'm sure he will be a very spoilt and loved piggy and couldnt have found a better home x) x

I have no garden left! lol x

Thank you, he really will be spoilt! LOL I bought enough toys for 2 so he has lots to play with & hide inside :))

well done for getting a boar =] there do seem to be so many of them needing homes, sows just get snatched up
i'm sure he'll have a lovely home with you =]

thank you. It did feel strange reserving a different animal when I was sure I was going to get the 2 girls. I'm sure they will soon find a home as they were very pretty.

I have thought about having him indoors but the RSPCA insist he has the hutch etc outside so for now that's where he will live. He may be bought in to the house over the winter rather than the shed ;)

I feel like he chose us :)

Now I just need to make a final decision on the hutch. I think I'll still go for the 4 by 2 foot one on 2 levels, I know it's far bigger than one piggy 'needs' but if we are ever able to bond him we'll be glad of the extra space. If we try to bond & it fails we can just adapt it so the 2 piggys can live on seperate floors as they will both still have more than enough room :)
