Harry has settled in really well. He is happy to be held, doesn't run & hide from us anymore etc :) He is a delightful addition to our family bless him :)
 
Thank you for the update - he sounds delightful! I'm sure he's as tickled with his new home as you are with him!
 
Harry is continuing to do well. No idea why the RSPCA said he was timid as he's is very friendly :)

They aged him at around 6 months. We are already starting to think about bonding him with another male, possibly a 'baby' so to speak. Do you think that's a good idea or should I wait until Harry's older?
 
I am so happy for you! He must be feeling right at home!

He's in his puberty and the "macho" phase, so I would definitely be going for a young one! Do you know whether the RSPCA tried to bond him before? It is worth knowing that before you make further plans.

I know that Sokel just had a huge influx of guinea pigs with several baby boars; they rehome nationally, if you can work out a "piggie train" (transport) with them. Quite a few people on this board are helping with that.

My local RSPCA said they tried & failed to bond him. However having been looking at their web site ever since it looks like all males are rehomed alone so not sure now.

At what age are they past puberty?

At about 12-15 months when they stop growing.

Most piggie boys are OK with a baby boy. I recommend you contact sokel (he's one of the moderators, so you can pm him and trust his advice) and discuss things with him or Hels (who is also a member).

As much as they want to rehome their charges, they also want the process to be a sucess for everybody concerned.

I'm thinking of getting Harry neutered so he can get a female companion. He is a lovely little chap but I think he needs some piggy company. There is one at the local RSPCA in need of a home, a very timid female who was not treated well in her past home. Even if they didn't bond we have more than enough living accommodation for one more. Very tempting to give it a go.
 
Well I did decide it was time to get Harry a friend. By doing a google search I found a local rescue & yesterday I gave them a ring. Wonderful lady chatted to me & not long after I took Harry round so she could see if there were any young boars he could be bonded with, far better than him having surgery if we could do it that way.

I came home with a 14 week old boar we have called Fred. They are sooo sweet together. So far it's going really well. They are already choosing to cuddle up together rather than on their own even though they have plenty of choice for sleeping places & playing. I know that there could be some issues as they get used to each other but so far they are very happy together. It's wonderful to see :)

It was quite sad to see just how many pigs were at the rescue, so many in need of a forever home. I loved that they took the time with Harry to find him a companion.
