One of my boys has recently had a really swollen willy. We took him to the vets two weeks ago as his willy was out and had really swollen and was red, the vet told us this was quite common in guinea pigs, they gave us some meta-cam to add to his water, which we have done. The vet also showed us how to clean it properly and how to push it back in, so if it was to happen again we wouldn't need to go back. Since then, Rufus' willy has come out every day, every day we have cleaned it and put it back and either later that day or the next morning it is out again. I rang the vets and they said to keep cleaning it and putting it back in . I just wondered if any one else has had this problem, if they have, did it stop? Do you have any tips? I don't want to hurt him by keep touching it but I also don't want it to get sore and infected by being out.

Poor boy, it doesn't sound at all comfortable so it's great he's been given Metacam although it's unusual to put it into his water as it doesn't give a very effective dose. It's usual to give it by syringe into a piggy's mouth. It might be worth checking this with your vet as then your boy will hopefully get a more effective dose of anti-inflammatory.

I hope someone can advise you better. My boys have never had much of a problem apart from getting the odd bit of hay or bedding stuck up there....

Well, when we first went, they gave him an injection of anti inflammatory so I think that's why they advised to put it in his water as he had already had quite a lot. But it hasn't really helped as the area is still quite swollen and from what I can see that's why his bits are not staying tucked in. Thank you, I think we are going to take him back to the vets and see if there is more that they can do! Thank you, I will take a look at the vet locator! The dosage was 0.6ml per 100ml of water, and their water bottle is a 320 ml bottle. He has finished this course of metercam now though. I have also changed his substrate from wood shavings to fleece and have moved him from an outside hutch to an indoors one so we can keep a better eye on him.

If you can, I would recommend to see another vet. Your boy may need an antibiotic and not a just painkiller/anti-inflammatory.

I agree that he needs to see a different vet and that the pain relief should not be given via his water. I don't have any experience of this happening am afraid.
