Typical...the one thing that Ben and Dave eat more than anything else, and the price goes through the roof...

At the moment:

Lidl - 99p (and they're dinky)
Tesco - £1.28 (£1.48 for organic!)

I know this happened during the fuel crisis before, but I don't understand why they're sooooooo dear again. I know that Spain's had bad weather, but most cucumbers are grown indoors now...

I've just cleaned the boys out and they're standing at the bars waiting for their cucumber...I feel soooo mean!

Anyone know of anywhere cheaper?:{

fraid not. asda was the cheapest but i cant get there much lately.
think i got mine from aldi it was a ig on tho for 99p. could try there?

I can't believe the cost of cucumbers now. My eight get through 2 cucumbers a week - it costs £2.50 just for that, never mind the rest of the salad! I buy from Tesco.

my eight normally get a whole cucumber per day but have cut them down to half a cucumber a day.

ah ha ha ha! tallulah's fave treat is grass so its great for me as its free! :))

but for some reason the only treat she will take from daddy is yog drops... rather odd.

i have a friend who used to get me 3 cucumbers from the market a week for a pound for 3 now they are 90p each my piggies havent had cucumber for amost a month now they are just too expensive they have plenty of other vegies though

Yogurt drops aren't healthy treats...most pet store treats are unhealthy and yogurt drops are high on the list. Fruit, veg, herbs or dried herbs are the best treats for piggies.

I also find my piggies get most of their water from cucumber. They all drink well but I like to give cucumber to be sure they are getting good water into them.

oh yes she only has a drop every now and again. she gets mostly cuecumber, lettuce and carrots. grass is a treat and then hay all the time.

i think she knows when daddy is down she can have a drop tho thats why she will only have this from him. he is only down once or twice a week.

With the money you save from the vitamin drops (noting from your thread in medical) try adding in some peppers and coriander to that mix of veg, and leave carrot out - even make that the treat daddy gives her if you can. :)

£8.40 it would cost me a week in Cucumbers to keep my 14, 2 rabbits and any fosters happy! Can't run to that! I remember the good old days when Cucumbers were 50p each!

I must start shopping in Lidl and Aldi again. I spent £30 in Tesco on Tuesday and it was not a lot for my money at all. As soon as the girls are back in school I'm going to budget shop its getting a joke now.

Ooo I'm raving! :(|)

I'm relatively lucky, we have a fruit and veg market in the centre of Belfast every weekend and it's generally a LOT cheaper than Tesco. Failling that, I usually nip to Iceland, but they don't have a wide veggie selection.

My preferred option is still stealing veggies out of my Mum's vegetable crisper when I'm home for a visit. It's always the cucumber that gets me caught out though...I think my Mum might even love it more than my guinea pigs!

my 11 get thought 3 a week i got mine from asda but i dont know how much their cost i just put them in the torelly but the food bill for the pigs seems to be getter more bigger by the week

Yep 3/4 times a week for my lot I go through almost 2 cucumbers a serving! :o

I always have cucumber on hand in case anyone is poorly, so I can use it with Critical Care. But they're £1.28 and as someone else said - tiny teeny weeny!

I guess they're out of season?

My dad grows them in the summer but he won't 'waste' them on piggies!

I thought Cucumbers weren't suppose to be fed everyday? My piggies only get them 3-4 times a week. Not everyday.
According to this chart: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition/22156-everything-you-need-know-about-cavys-diet-read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html

Everyone gives what is safe but what suits them and what they have found works. Generally if you feed everything in moderation, you can be pretty flexible. I learnt a long time ago not to stick religiously to what everyone else told me - though I took it all on board from many sources - but to work out what works for me and my pigs from what foods I had access to. As long as the diet is balanced (i.e. not just lettuce and cucumber, veg of little nutrition, but also peppers and coriander for the nutritional aspect) then I don't worry too much; I just feed in moderation.

MIne love cukes and coriander, but I'm glad it's not just me who finds them exhorbitantly expensive at the moment - I wouldn't mind so much if they were massive ones, but as already pointed out they're teeny!

Most are grown indoors so I don't understand how they're out of season...they tend to be Dutch or Spanish. I'm sounding like a bit of an anorak!

I caved in today. Nettos are 99p, but although still not huge, they are about twice as big as Lidls! I swear I saw Ben smile!:))rolleyes

That's what I do Laura. To be honest I just get what is cheapest and then the following week try and get different veggies that are just as cheap.

Cucumbers are fab mainly because I can nick some as I chop! :D Don't fancy doing that with Broccoli!

Corn on the cob I find is most expensive!

I was speaking to a market trader yesterday who said that the increase in price (his were £1.40 and he'd only managed to get 10!) was due to the £/Euro exchange rate being so awful and that there had been bad weather in Spain so not many were getting through. Nice to know why they've gone up but it doesn't help the piggies much! Roll on the summer when they should be cheap again!
