Really sorry for loads of questions, did try and google/research but just found small snippets of info all over the place. Do you have a permanent thread on this? If not here goes with my questions - we've just finished giving pebbles her regular short, back and sides trim and butt bath (long haired guinea pigs!) and noticed her fur is covered in what looks like specks of black pepper. They don't move and are regularly spaced apart. Is this hay mites/static lice? I told my daughter it was hay dust to stop her crying about it but they dont brush off! If so, Can I just treat it or do I need to take to vets? Ideally I'd like not to take to vets as just recovering from taking hamster to vet with suspected tumour only for it to be diagnosed with a full food pouch! If so Could I treat them with lice and easy? And would I need to follow any special cleaning regimes? Because I really don't do enough cleaning! Unfortunately My daughter does have a tendency to go from guinea pig to hamster so is there any chance it can spread to pingu our latest hamster addition? Final questions nearly there - can it b transferred to humans or effect them My Daughter has a lot of allergies I really need to b a little bit Careful. Actually I'm surprised there were so many do u know how long It takes to spread My daughter is normally hyper vigilant - shocked she didn't notice during her I'm pretending to b a vet sessions! Sorry for war and peace!

,,try Google ing static lice on guinea pigs
I just did it but the link would cut and paste?

It sounds like hay mites, the eggs are fixed to the hair and that's the black specks you can see. They are harmless just causing minor irritation. They arrive on the hay so your cleanliness is irrelevant.
Just treat with a recommended shampoo or spot on treatment. Follow the instructions carefully and repeat at 7 to 10 day intervals for a total of 3 treatments. The eggs may remain until the hair grows out but will be dead.
They are not likely to affect the hamster or humans.
If any sore spots, scaly skin or excessive scratching please see a vet first.

Hi thanks for all the advice. Decided to go to vets just in case as I really wasn't sure and it's defo lice and they've given me some Xeno spot on treatment. To b repeated in two weeks time. (Not 3 treatments?). I'm just about to deep clean the correx cage. I can only wash the fleece at 60 degrees will this b enough to kill the lice? They've recommended I dispose of any wooden toys. I do have one nice large wooden archway. Seems a big shame to throw away. Would spraying it be enough? Nothing like spending a sunny bank holiday cleaning a cage!

Hi I treated for mites with xeno and vet said treat again in two weeks. I just did this yesterday, they r still scratching today. Is it worth treating again in 7 days one more time? Also at the beginning of the treatment I did a deep clean of cage etc, should I have repeated this? It's all very confusing. Thanks for your help
