Re Storm surge. This is now a very serious threat.

Please take these warnings seriously and follow the advice of the EA and emergency services. Make sure all pets etc are protected and on higher ground if you are in an at risk area from the coast or tidal rivers. There are now 25 severe warnings for East Anglia...which means a danger to life so act now and be prepared to evacuate during daylight hours today
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx

Evacuations are now taking place in coastal East Anglia

The Thames Barrier is being closed at 10pm tonight to defend London

Stay safe everyone....please be prepared with torches/batteries etc and don't take un-necessary risks. All pets in flood risk areas should be crated/in carriers and on higher ground indoors tonight in case evacuation is required.

FLOOD WARNINGS:
The EA website can be a bit "slow" atm....

....here's another site which is also a bit slow to load atm

TYNE AND WEAR

The Tyne has broken its banks in Newcastle city centre as the storm surge combines with the incoming high tide and starts to affect coastal areas and river estuaries

http://tyneandwear.sky.com/news/art...e-bursts-its-banks-as-north-east-prepares-for

NB the timings for high tide will be later the further south you go down the coast. The high tide is due to reach Kings Lynn by 7pm, moving on to Great Yarmouth by 10.30pm and Lowestoft by 10:45pm. It is expected to progress south down the coastline through the evening, hence why Kent high tide is forecast for about 1am tomorrow morning.

Oh man. Took me 3x as long to get home, half the roads are flooded, the railway crossings are all stuck too so chaos. I am right on the coast just below newcastle (30 miles as the crow flies) and my house is only 0.25 miles from the coast and the land is totally flat so I hope it isnt bad here, likewise for everyone else

I wish everyone well. I'm hoping I will be ok but there were warning for Lancashire, I am in a "Flood Risk" area according to surveyors etc.. but fingers crossed for everyone!

Bekki - please put your postcode into the EA flood warning site to find out the warnings for your area....a lot of the North Sea coast is currently "Flood Warning" status, although there are two severe flood warnings out for Whitby. Given your description of the land I think you ought to consider taking a few sensible precautions.

It would be helpful if this thread could be kept for reporting updates on evacuation/ flooding as it occurs tonight and tomorrow -

Chat etc can be found on this one here:

Many thanks

Stay safe and warm everyone, I'm one of the lucky ones and I don't think there is any danger where I live. My thoughts will be with those in the 'likely to be affected' areas and I hope you all stay safe!

WAVENEY

Waveney warning 2043:

Waveney District Council is urging residents in threatened properties to vacate as soon as possible.

Reports suggest that the tide is far higher, far earlier than expected and residents should not wait until immediately before the predicted surge peak at about 23:00 to head to a shelter.

Don;t have a linkie atm...but if you're at risk then GET OUT!

x

Latest update for Waveney:

http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news...the_country_and_military_on_standby_1_3080978

The wind storm has moved rapidly south and although we can still expect some strong gusts this early evening, the main danger now is from the tidal surge/flooding due to take place at or before high tide tonight and lunchtime tomorrow.

Low-lying coastal areas along the East, East Anglia and Kent coasts, and those on Eastern tidal rivers, are at risk of severe flooding and the EA are predicting that some defenses will be over-topped. Depending upon where you are on the coast the surge could be anything up to 9m high.

Please check the EA map to see if your area/property is at risk......go into the flood maps for your area which show the extent of those properties at risk:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx

There are currently as of the time of this post, 56 severe flood warning out across the country, 120 flood warnings and 68 flood alerts.
  • Severe flood warning = danger to life and property. Be prepared to evacuate if you haven;t already been told to do so by the authorities, move everything to higher ground and if possible go stay with relatives/friends. Turn off gas/electric/water before you leave.
  • Flood warning = flooding expected - take action - this warning may be upgraded at short notice during the night so ensure you are prepared to evacuate if necessary
  • Flood alert - risk of flooding. Be prepared
If your property is directly in the shaded map area of Severe Flood Warning you need to take action NOW to ensure the safety of yourself and your pets...which means first floor or above if you intend to stay put....but better if you can find somewhere safe to stay until tomorrow afternoon.

Stay safe everyone

updates from the BBC.

2102: BBC Radio Lincolnshire reports that flood water is receding in Boston.

2112: The BBC's Dan Johnson, reporting from Whitby, says: "The water has come over the harbour and, according to the fire service, flooded maybe 200 properties around the harbour. Now to add to the problems we've been plunged into darkness by a power failure around the harbour area. Street lights are out, the lights in houses are out, the only illumination is the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles."

Kent:

Sandwich, Seasalter, Faversham, and others in Kent

http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/kent-on-flood-alert-ahead-9812/

SUFFOLK

Bridge closure 2147:
Oulton Broad road bridge is to be closed shortly, Waveney District Council says.

It says water levels are now too high for cars to cross safely.

Revised Suffolk warning 2139:
The Suffolk Resilience Forum says it expects the tidal surge to hit the Suffolk coastline "up to an hour earlier than predicted - and may be slightly higher".

It said the next high tide at Lowestoft was expected at about 23:00.

A spokesperson said the tidal surge had hit parts of Norfolk an hour early, and "in some cases has been 200-300mm higher than estimated".

Lowestoft - Suffolk

Tide is early and double the predictions ie 5m as opposed to 2.5m extra above seal level

http://www.ntslf.org/data/realtime?port=Lowestoft

From data gathered so far up the coast, the surge is going to be higher than originally predicted.....therefore more areas of land will be at risk of flooding.

Anyone near the East/Kent coast needs to
a) prepare for evacuation and ensure their pets are safe
b) keep listening to local radio
c) check the wellies and the torch batteries are available...and get that car to higher ground NOW!

EVERYONE COASTAL

Please be aware that if you have flooding issues tonight...you will probably experience them again at next high tide tomorrow midday
