My three year old male named Humperdinck has been acting strange since last night. I have a 2x4 c&c cage at the moment with hay and water located on the left side of the cage. Recently, he has been scared to death of that side of the cage. He's been cowering in the back of the cage, and every time I move him next to the hay, he screams and wiggles out of my hands, only to go back to the far side. His cage mate, Willis, shouldn't be to blame here. I don't see any signs of aggressiveness or territory disputes. In fact, Willis seems slightly concerned about his friend, often coming smell him over and make sure he's okay.

Earlier today, I took him out of his cage and in the bathroom and he ate, drank, and walked around normally. Why on earth is he acting so strange? I've had him for almost 7 months now and he hasn't done anything like this before.

Strange did anything happen maybe turn the cage around clean it out move things around

He might have been spooked of something. I had a guinea pig who experienced that in the past. Nothing of any thing unusual and then suddenly she was so afraid of going to that place. She would sniff it then run on the other side. It lasted for a couple of days until she got her courage back and slowly approached the other side again.

It sounds like something has been giving him a really bad fright. Could there have been a spider or something in the hay?

You might want to think about cleaning and rearranging the cage. Please offer him hay close by to where he is sitting to make sure that he eats it since it should make 80% and more of the daily food intake.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll rearrange his cage when I get home from work. Last night I set out hay where he bunkered down, so he had something to eat. The spider thing is a little freaky. Although there once was a cockroach in their cage....it was eating the cardboard box they used for a potty. That was nasty times. I suppose I’ll give it a good scrub over just in case.

My boy Higgins does this occasionally. His cage mate just carries on like nothing's happened! We are sure we have a ghost cat though, as our dog gets disturbed/unnerved by something, too!
Make sure to make plenty of 'good' piggie noises when you're around the cage, Higgins was much more settled with a nose rub and 'cuddle'.
If he doesn't seem to be getting better you could take him for a check up, but I'm sure it's just nerves :)
