Panic stations on Wednesday night when I noticed a patch of bright red blood on the aubiose. Scooped it up and it was fresh, thick blood that was sticky and not mixed with urine. I found it was Donald who had a little bit on his penis (he's left with an outey following neutering) and a bit dried around his anus. I carefully cleaned him off with warm water and a cloth, he also had a long hair wrapped around it.

Checked him everyday since and there has been no further issues or blood anywhere in the hutch. I'm putting it down to a freak incident. Weekly weigh in tomorrow will show whether anything else is going on. Anything I should be looking out for?

Anyone experienced this?

It may be just a cut, but if in doubt, please have him vet checked.

Oh no! I would have gone into panic overdrive if that had been one of mine. How scary for you. I really hope Donald is OK Kelly!

Fingers crossed it was just a one off Kelly, sending hugs!

Blimey, that would have sent me into a panic. Well done for staying calm. Has there been any recurrence?

Hope Donald is ok.
I would have probably been in the car on the way to the vet hospital within minutes of seeing that.

No recurrence at all and I was inspecting the aubiose very closely during the big clean out. His bits are looking normal (for him) and his appetite is as good as ever. There has been a slight weightloss but this is under 20g and last week was 4g and week before 6g. Given the failed bondings this could also be down to stress so I'm going to monitor him going forward and if there is more weightloss this week then he will be going to the vets for a check over.

So an update. There's been no more blood and no signs of any illness however Donald has been losing weight consistently since May. He's lost anything between 2 and 35grams in any one week and is still a hefty 1158g but still we went to the vet. Donald saw his good friend Michelle who he has seen far too many times in the past 6-12 months :))

Unfortunately Donald does have some blood in his urine. He did a big wee on the table and there was a white patch in it (not the usual whitish wee but a patch within it that looked a little gritty). So we have sulfatrim and metacam for a few days and we are back on Wednesday to check him over. He made a few slight squeaks of discomfort when his bladder was felt so we aren't sure what's going on but if he's still in discomfort on Wednesday then we will be checking for stones/sludge.

Fingers crossed it's just an infection :(

Hope it is too and that the meds can get on top of it. At least he was obliging and did a wee for the vet!

So Donald was back at the vet today. We skipped his morning metacam so we could see his reaction to being examined. While there was still some discomfort it was not at bad as Friday so obviously moving in the right direction. I opted for an x-ray as my vet preferred one to be sure. No stones there now but doesn't mean there wasn't one that was passed (which could have explained the blood) we are to carry on with his metacam and sulfatrim for another 5 days but only need to go back if there is a deterioration. I will now also be reviewing his diet

Really pleased for Donald that X-ray is clear. Have u tried him on cystease or glucosamine supplements? I have found this helpful for bladder recovery boys

Glad to hear Donald is on the mend.
If it was a stone which is now gone he probably still feels quite tender inside.

Glad that the X-ray didn’t show anything nasty. Onwards, Donald. Onwards xx

Pleased no stones Kelly, sending lots of healing vibes to Donald

I've not though I used cystease for a while with one of my original ladies. I shall look into it thank you

So guess who checked on the piggies last night to find more fresh blood from Donald's willy?! Obviously something's not right though I think the UTI did clear (maybe not completely). He's wet and hair has gone crusty down one leg. But that said the last two weeks he has gained weight again so I figured he was going in the right direction. No more blood yet but will keep checking every half hour to see as it's quite easy to spot. Luckily it's pay day as I think our vets might be getting some more business out of me

Oh dear lord no. Poor Donald x

Well after my last post Donald improved again and there's been no more blood. However I noticed the other day he was feeling skinnier so weighing daily and he seems to be gradually going down and the hutch smells much more strongly and quickly than normal so we are off to the vets again tomorrow to figure out what to do next

A quick update on Donald. Quite clearly the infection is back as he STINKS! Like within a few hours the bedding smells and he is a mess. True to form there was watered down blood on his penis when I got him out to take him to the vets as well. We are now on a higher dose of antibiotics but there is a worry that he shows no sign of discomfort when his bladder is palpated but there is discomfort with his kidneys. If he doesn't make an improvement or the infection comes straight back again then my vet wants to refer to a local specialist for further investigation

Poor Donald and what a worrying time for you Kelly. If only they could tell us where it hurt ......
