Sudden Paralysis in Back Legs

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully and with so much wisdom. I’m just not able to cope with the trauma at the moment but your words give me hope and strength to carry on. The grief has felt overwhelming. I really hope that I’ll be able to pay it forward here too; right now I’m just in pieces and emotionally exhausted. I miss my boys so much. My darling Shaun who died last Saturday was only 3 and so full of life. He was such a vocal fella and the house feels empty without him. He used to nibble my nose when I cuddled him ♥️.

The hot weather guide will be very useful thank you. I’m hyper vigilant about it now. We moved in July and the new house is cooler in temperature than our previous place (no carpets either) but even so I need to do everything possible to keep my piggies cool.

What you have said is hugely comforting and I’m so grateful; I’m going to go to bed now and hopefully get some sleep (only for about 5½ hours though) 💕💕

This is not yet the time for healing but if you can hang on in there, it will eventually come - I promise.

After not losing a single piggy in 27 during the 18 months of the thick of the pandemic and then losing 22 of them in the following 24 months between 15th August 2021- 15th August 2023 has carried me to the edge and at time over it when I stopped being able to grieve at all for a while as the deaths were not neatly spaced out but I lost repeatedly piggies within days of each other; starting with 3 in just a week and a fourth within the month. On 19th December 2022 I came home from having had to pts (put to sleep) an oldie only to find another old lady in the adjoining cage having lost use of her back legs in the meantime. She passed away in the early of hours of the following morning, within less than 24 hours of the first loss. Needless to say that I wasn't feeling exactly in the mood for Christmas that year! And that I very much started to doubt myself as well.
The piggies I have lost in those two years have ranged from a few 8 year olds to losing the same number of 3 year olds to medical issues or to them just dying out of the blue without any warning and any age in between.

I hope that this is going to help you put things into perspective for yourself. You are not a bad owner or person; you are a grieving owner going through one of the most traumatic experiences imagineable. Just focus on hanging on in there.

When I was in hospital with my broken hip and my swollen brain and brain tumour, and once I was able to leave my bed and visit my fellow mates in their beds in the orthopaedic ward with complex breaks that cannot be plastered up, I would spend time chatting with each of the women to find out what mattered most to them in their lives and how they were as personalities. I tried to come up with a crucial connection and an image based on it that they could cling onto whenever their pain became overwhelming, help couldn't arrive soon enough (but often didn't, especially at night) and morphine couldn't kick in fast enough - as something helpful for when I was no longer around to sit with them, hold their hands and just talk with them through the waves of pain; especially during the long nights when the night crew had to mind several wards and was busy with another emergency or two somewhere else.

See what helps you most - holding onto your mother's hand or taking her into your arms (or being taken into her arms) or whether being nibbled on the nose by an affectionate piggy will be the inner rock you can cling to in the middle of the storm you have to currently weather because that connection is the rock your inner strength is resting on.

With another lady who was fighting for her life with a skin infection after a bite who had a disabled daughter it was her inner impressive inner strength and her strong roots she could imagine drawing up strength to keep fighting through her excruciating pain.
For you, my feeling is that your deepest connection is with your mum for finding your very own source of strength and solace. Since this is a very individual thing you have to see whether it works for yourself - it will come to you.

I hope that this will give you some solace but also a way to weather the storm. We never lose those we love and we can always find them again if we start looking. I have my dad and his own determined 3 year battle with terminal cancer at a very similar age to take my strength from and my most special ever piggy, aptly named Minx, to play around with in my mind whenever I need solace or to relax.

Morning the words and sentiments in your posts are proof of what a wonderful guinea parent you have been and are.
You have loved each one of them unconditionally and would have done anything for them and are doing now for Peanut and Nevaeh as Wiebke says it's in our nature to blame ourselves but at the time even if looking back we didn't do the best thing we never intended to hurt our guineas and we learn as we make this journey with them 🙏
Remember what you have been through these past weeks has been and still is traumatic not many of us can fully imagine how it must be affecting you but one thing we do all know because it's clear is that you are a fantastic guinea parent in all ways ❤️
Thank you 💕💕 I’m so sorry I’ve been quiet. You’ve all been so supportive, gentle and reassuring. I am just in a very low place right now. I sent a long voice message to the boarder and she replied with this;
“Hi Julia,
All animals that come bonded together stay together and never mix with any other animals.
I only feed them vegetables from the supermarket, for guinea pigs I stick with kale, spring greens, peppers and herbs. There is absolutely no chance they could have come into contact with anything toxic.
All of my runs are on concrete so they can be cleaned and sanitised in between animals and prevent anyone digging etc.
As you are aware I look after both rabbits and guinea pigs and the hutches are fully sanitised with pet disinfectant and vinegar when needed to help remove urine.
Before your piggies staying, over the summer there were both rabbits and guinea pigs in that hutch, the booking before was rabbits.”

Of course, she can say this! I still believe that the hutch my boys were in were not sanitised properly, and rabbits were in it before!

I’m taking my beloved Shaun to Dignity Pet Crematorium this afternoon. This will be the hardest trip I’ve ever had 💔 Shaun had the loudest voice and the biggest nose nibbles! 💛🤍💛

I’m so sorry for all the precious piggies you’ve lost and the turbulent challenging times you have faced too 😢😢. I will write more later but I just wanted to say that you are right - finding the source of strength and solace is essential. I had some very cute chin nibbles from my one-year old piggy Nevaeh earlier. I’ve been trying to connect with happy memories of my mum, my piggies.. instead of drowning in the sorrows of loss. It is so hard but I have to also find something in my life to bring me peace.. I’ve thought about learning to paint or sketch ❤️

Also.. Peanut is taking some more antibiotics and also bacterial eye drops to combat an infection. He has sticky eyes and nose. The vet suspects Bordetella which could have caused a neurological issue but there’s still uncertainty. Even the RVC came back to the vet via email and couldn’t offer any answers. This vet is much more piggy savvy so we are going to persist for another week with a stronger antibiotic, and I’ll phone him on Monday with an update. Peanut is eating though he’s now 1.1kg - he was 1.25kg just over a week ago. The vet could take bloods but this will incur more costs of course and Peanut would have to be lightly anaesthetised 😞

Sending you hugs.

The only disinfecting product I would trust would be F10 (it’s a vet grade disinfectant) rather than a pet shop product with the f10 made up to a high concentration.

I keep both piggies and rabbits as pets. I do not share items ever, they don’t share an air space, I always deal with the piggies first, use F10 to disinfect etc etc.

Simon, the vet, mentioned Bordetella when I spoke to him, as it’s carried by rabbits. I can’t find any info re back leg paralysis though!

By all means follow your instinct. You are doing right.

I have found watercolouring very helpful during the years my dad fought his own terminal cancer and in the immediately following years before I started my adult piggy journey just over 20 years ago and got very busy with trying to keep up with my appropriately named house piggy Minx and her sidekick Mischief.
But any medium will do - try things out and find the one that suits you best. Crayons are great for a relatively quick effect, especially when you haven't as much leisure time and some strong emotions to work out of yourself. It is great that you have started thinking about what you can do to help yourself. :tu:

If you prefer something physical, dancing your emotions out can also help.

Personally, I find that continuing to give solace and advice on here adds meaning to my own life. It is what I am good at and making people feel better in themselves makes me better in myself, too. I don't just want to sit around; what I need is something flexible I can do and a resemblance of normality. It's also providing me with a caring community - but that is tailoring to my own needs and strengths. I could live another 10 years but it could be just months; what nobody can predict is how long my cancer meds are going to work; only that it won't be forever. ;)

Of course, I would love to see out the last of my own piggies and of course I would like to be around for my hub for longer but that is not in my control. What I do today is. so I take it day by day. :)

Try to focus on your own today as well. That helps to make your burden more bearable and manageable.

Thank you.. I know, Bordetella doesn’t seem to cause paralysis, unless it led to brain swelling maybe as a result of the infection?

No, that is more down the e.cuniculi route, which affects the brain and the nervous system.

Hence why I ruled out bordetella bronchiseptia, which is a respiratory infection that rabbits can be carriers of without showing symptoms. Apathy, yes, together with respiratory symptoms but loss of back leg mobility has never been mentioned or shown up on here in combination of a bordetella diagnosis.
Bordetella (kennel cough) can also be transmitted from dogs to guinea pigs, which is the form we usually see on here but again, never in combination with back leg paralysis; it is a respiratory disease.

Right, okay. It’s all so confusing.. yesterday was just heartbreaking as I said farewell to my beloved Shauny. I didn’t want to leave him 💔💔. I just wanted to hold him forever. I’m so lonely without his loud wheeks 🥺😢😞

HUGE HUGS

For me, the most heartbreaking part is always the getting used to a piggy no longer being physically there. It doesn't matter how many piggies and pets you still have, when you love, each face is special and the piggy room feels very empty without it. :(

It is all a bit mysterious and confusing; especially as you weren't there when it happened and cannot ascertain the exact circumstances. You are not the police at the crime scene, your experience is that of the A&E/intensive care crew dealing with the fallout and picking up the pieces... :(

Shaun will always live in your heart (the same as Biscuit and your mum) and you can pick that up again through your bond, which will always be there; but you generally have to get over the physical absence and the worst of your grieving process first before you can do that.

I wish I could alleviate this part for you but I can't. It is when you truly find out just in how many conscious and subconscious little ways you have been connected with someone, whether they have fur or bare skin. :(

My thoughts are with you. You have tried your very best for your special boy and could not have done more. He was just too far down the road to make it. Whatever your boys have picked up, it is sadly one of the real nasties - and when the chips are down, behind their huge personalities piggies are just very small animals with a very fast metabolism where traditional meds often run behind because they take time to get to work and they are also not designed for their species... :( :( :(

Shaun and Biscuit are with you always and I know they are thanking you for all of the love you gave them and for the love you will always have for them. They know you did everything you could 💙💙

I'm so so sorry Shaun has gone. You did absolutely everything you could with all the love you had for them, and still have - they will know how much you cared about them.

They will 100% watching over you with love.

We are all still here for you, so please stick around. Many of us have been through the loss of our treasured pigs, although perhaps not in such traumatic circumstances.

We have been in the same position recently of suddenly being pig less, having lost our three pigs within 6 weeks, all unrelated. It's a very very strange situation, but it gives you a.l chance to grieve. To spend lots of time with your sow who will need your love and cuddles.

Then when the time is right, and you feel ready, more pigs will find you. We have two lethal white babies coming into the rescue soon. I like to think our rainbow bridge pigs have sent them our way.

Perhaps your three boys will do the same one day...

Thank you 💗. I’m so sorry for checking back in so late. I had a really busy week at work and I’ve been so tired in the evenings, with my fibromyalgia 😓. I miss my boys so much 💔💔. Peanut is still battling on. He’s normal in every way except for his back legs which haven’t recovered. I’ve noticed though that he does these jerky movements when he’s on my lap. Almost like a spasm or tic. I don’t know if this is part of his condition now. He’s still taking some antibiotics and eye drops for the bacterial infection. X

Just wanted you to know we're thinking of you all 💐
Aww thank you 🙏🩷. I’m still grieving heavily. Work has distracted me somewhat this week but I feel it’s time I started focusing on getting advice from the CAB etc

Take good care of yourself and give yourself time to heal emotionally as well as recover physically. It's been such a traumatic time that it has taken its toll. :(

I am very sorry that Peanut's back legs are not improving but he seems to have enough zest for life to hang on in there for now.

This is a beautiful message, thank you 💗 I’m definitely sticking around, I just had a very tough week at work and my fibromyalgia has really flared up too.

I’m still in such distress about the precious boys I’ve lost and watching Peanut struggle to move around. He’s eating and drinking normally though. He’s seemingly okay and his bacterial infection must be clearing up with the antibiotics. He still can’t walk though 😢.

I’m so so sorry that you lost your 3 piggies in 6 weeks 💔💔💔. Life is so hard. I’m giving Nevaeh lots of love and cuddles so she knows I’m here for her, and Peanut too is getting tons of love 💗💗. I pray that Shaun and Biscuit are giving him the will to carry on 🙏

What a blessing to have 2 piggies coming your way. I hope that will happen to me too. I do need a sow companion for Nevaeh 🤍

Thank you.. I do feel like that. Last week I was so exhausted I just had no energy or will to do much in the evenings aside from cooking dinner for the kids. I barely ate dinner myself though.

Yes, Peanut is hanging in there. I’m going to just take it one day at a time 💕

Of course we all wish it hadn't happened in the first place but I am glad that I could give you some much needed comfort in a situation that would have broken many.
Thank you ❤️ I just commented on a thread where someone had lost her 2 lovely piggies in 12 hours and honestly I just broke down in floods of tears. I think everything is very raw and my depression doesn’t help 😞💔

Ask your vet if they would be willing to prescribe some gabapentin. It might not make any difference, but as this sounds neurological, I think it could be worth trialling and it might help xx

BIG HUGS

It is all a bit too raw for you right now. Only time will heal. I would recommend that you stay away from those threads until they don't majorly upset you anymore. I do if a loss of mine is still too raw and wait until I am able to cope with it. The mod team understands and we give each other time and space to recover with our own tribulations and tragedies.

Look after yourself, your family and your remaining piggies first and foremost. You are a lovely lady with a huge heart but you need to give the glue time to hold the broken bits together.
