Hopefully something can be arranged to help both Ishy and Percy. I agree Bisolvon would be good, think I mentioned it this morning.

@Pebble you are a star. I think all the posts are from people doing their best to try to find solutions for Ishy and Percy, but Ishy has certainly been in an awful position through no fault of her own with time and money constraints. She has nothing to feel guilty about, although it is a natural reaction and we all feel pangs of guilt when we cannot help our loved ones.
None of this is Ishy's fault, and neither could she have foreseen this illness. As mentioned, piggies do indeed hide their illnesses, plus with bloat it can come on very suddenly anyway.
I've been thinking of Ishy and Percy while at work today, hoping that both have been getting on well, and I'm really glad that Pebble has found what is hopefully a workable solution.
Ishy should feel no guilt at all, she has done all in her power, and the vet situation has been more than frustrating.
Ishy if you read this, you are a truly lovely and caring piggy-Mum, and what ever the outcome with Percy, he couldn't wish for a more loving Mum. xx
 
Thank you all for your kind words.

Cheryl has kindly offered to take Percy for a bit and help him get better.

However, seeing him this morning (no significant change but breathing is noisy) I was in tears and fighting with myself as to whether it is just better to let him go to sleep.

This is a horrible decision to have to make but I don't want him to suffer and I'm pretty sure he is suffering right now.

So confused :(

Please be aware that any meds take a bit of time to get working. I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed for Percy and you!
 
He's so awkward to give meds to that I can' be sure I'm doing it right/enough.

I think Debbie (if she's stil willing) can give him the attention he deserves more than I can.

Heartbroken over what to do and will miss them terribly :(

It is always hard to entrust your much beloved piggy into the hands of strangers, but if there is a chance to save him, than you are giving it it to him. You are a very loving and caring mum that is putting Percy's wellbeing before your own desires - but nobody has ever said that it would be easy. :(
 
Excellent plan Ishy! Cheryl is so devoted to piggies that I know she will do everything she can to help Percy get better. Even if the worst happens and he goes over the bridge then you will have done everything you can for him. I often wonder what would happen if either of my 2 needed this level of support. I work 12hour shifts and so would really struggle.

Keeping everything crossed for Percy's recovery. I know Cheryl will keep us up to date but please stay in touch with us all as well x
 
Quick update:

Following my visit to Ishy this evening, Percy and Piglet have now been admitted by Uncle Hedley.
Percy has severe bloat (he "blew up again" during today). The respiratory sounds are not a URI - it is pressure from the intestines/internal organs on his diaphragm as a result of the bloat.
He is nevertheless bright, inquisitive and gobbling dandelions. We have also seen a couple of very small poos.
He is being Xrayed dorsally and laterally (whiff of gas) to determine if it is just gas or whether it is frothy bloat as the treatment for each is different and will then be started on the appropriate meds (including cisparide to increase motility of the hind gut and metacam for pain relief). Needless to say he is off the baytril!

The good news is that Piglet also has bloat (though not as bad as Percy as his guts are still moving). He will not be Xrayed but just given some cisparide and, if necessary, some pain relief. This is good news because it means that in all likelihood the bloat/gut stasis has been caused by something they have both eaten (personally my money is on a dodgy piece of kale which has happened to me before even though the prepacked veg is still within its sell-by date). This menas no further investigations of Percy will be required atm to rule out eg obstruction etc and hopefully they should both make a full recovery.

Currently they are enjoying round the clock care/obs/feeding from Uncle Hedley and Nurse Rosie. This next 24-48hours will be critical for Percy because his abdomen is so distended and there can be nasty (and sometimes fatal) complications with bloat when it is this severe. (I'm hoping that the 75minute car journey will have at least gone some way to helping him get rid of some of that gas!)

The real tragedy of this situation is that Ishy has done everything she should have, including paying out an incredible amount of money on sunday, to a vets who sadly clearly do not have the best experience for treating this condition.If she had been able to access an equivalent Uncle Hedley and Nurse Rosie on sunday - Percy would now be well on the way to recovery.,

This has been a very difficult and stressful few days for her and her hubby - and I would like to thank them for entrusting me (and my vets) with the care of their little furries.

I hope Ishy comes to see that she is a brilliant piggy mum and really has done everything for her little ones.

I agree with both statements. I'd be clueless on how to deal with my boys if they were to become poorly, @ishy28, you've done amazing! I'm extremely grateful that I have somewhere to turn for the good or the bad. The support on this forum is tremendous! What a great community to be part of :)
 
I spoke to the day vets this morning and have already communicated their observations to Ishy.

I will give a succinct update to the forum on their porogress once I have spoken to Uncle Hedley tonight (it being 24hrs post admission)

I'm fairly certain everyone on this forum has cried over guinea pig's. Your certainly not alone, I thought that was normal behaviour certainly is in my household so don't be to hard on yourself. Really hope your little ones recover quickly.

@Pebble the boys and Ishy are very lucky you stepped in to help, your definitely a piggy guardian angel. :-)
 
I can't believe the difference in care between vets. The more I think about how the vets here treated him, the more angry I get.

I can't be thankful enough that Pebble stepped in.

I love my boys so much, they have been part of out lives for 4 years. I hope I haven't caused this as the guilt would be awful.

I'm glad they're together at least and hope they aren't missing mine and hubby's voices x
 
Just spoken to Uncle Hedley......
Yesterday's Xrays showed that poor little Percy has one of the worst cases of bloat the vets have ever seen...he has huge amounts of gas in every part of his intestinal tract from stomach through to rectum.

Yes amazingly Percy is very perky, eating, drinking....and the vets can't understand why he isn;t more poorly! He is clearly a very feisty wee boy. He is not showing any signs of pain but the vets aren;t taking any chances and have him on two types of pain relief.

The nasal discharge he had yesterday has now resolved but unfortunately there has been no movement on the bloat today as yet (but it is only 24hrs)

They are throwing every med they can at the bloat and until his abdomen starts to go down (ie Percy decides to produce the most impressive farts!), they can do no further investigations to try and find the cause of his condition. They are considering the possibillity that something has caused him to swallow a lot of air (aerophagia) given the extent of the bloat....but at the moment nothing has shown itself on Xray and so they are waiting for Percy's bowels to decide to "do their stuff"!

Piglet is recovering from his blot very well.

Paws all crossed for Percy please - he is a truly amazing piggie as he is defying all the odds (and medical knowledge) given his condition - and is making it very oplain he has no wish to depart this world as yet
