Cally broke his top teeth around a month ago and stopped eating or drinking.

I was told to file down any sharp points and then syringe feed him until he started eating, he hasn't started eating for himself yet although will nibble at readigrass and veg, he eats veg very slowly but attacks it the same as my other pigs.

We took him to our rodentologist and had his back teeth checked, they found ulsers on the back of his tongue so with syringing we started giving him daktarin, nothing seemed to be improving then I noticed he started hooting when breathing so I took him to our vets.

She said his chest was clear and the tongue was still pink but looked to be healing, we were given Emeprid to try and push his gut and increase his appitite, she also gave him baytril which I couldn't get changed to the other brand, to help with the ulser healing. I gave him 0.35ml of baytril last night and 2 0.4ml of the other stuff last night but when i started feeding him this morning, he dribbled poop all down me, watery with a bit of jelly, it made me heave because the smell was so strong. He hasn't got any in the cage & hasn't had any more as far as I'm aware but has a bit of white stuff coating the opening of him bum.

I noticed on another post Critical Care would be good for an animal not eating my boyfriend is collecting some from the vet tomorrow. Will it come with instructions as I can't rememeber using it.

Cally is still active, clear bright eyes, hooting doesn't really happen all the time, seemed to be just before bed or just woken up.

Any experience or advice on how to bring his body up to scratch would help. I'm feeding him 60ml of runny poridge like excell a day, i was told I didn't need to syringe water as it was runny enough though, but i do clear his mouth out with it so it's not just caked in the stuff.

If he's not pooing or has diarrhoea he needs to go back to the vet for further treatment ASAP

Critical care is what I use to syringe feed so use that instead! But please go to have him checked out at the vet!xx

I am not in the situation to be able to rush to the vet at any given moment I'm afraid, it takes me a good amount of planning before we can go... My partner and I work, I have agoraphobia and the vet we have is 2 hours away by bus or my partner takes the morning off and takes us then his mom brings us back. No there isn't a vet nearer to us and we plan on moving near our vet in April anyhows so no point in changing.

I understand and know it CAN be serious when a pig has watery poo but it doesn't always mean he needs to be rushed somewhere... he had one little bit of water poop and now he''s pooping loads of normal (although little) poops, he's eating more since giving the gut stimuli. He's put on weight since yesterday and eating (syringe) more then he has in the last few weeks so I feel maybe he's rebuilding himself since the medicine.

Does anyone know how to use critical care then? I have a 36g sachet from the vets, do I use a small amount or the entire pouch and mix it with cold or warm water? It has no British instructions on it >.< He's still eating Excell watered down with no problems, he's even asking for water syringes afterwards which is good, atm I feed him 6 times a day with 2-3 hours inbetween, a bit longer if he has taken a lot in one feeding. As I said before, he's active, bright and is now pooping, honestly he did around 15 poops whilst i was feeding him. They are dark brown but not like they were when he was dehydrated so I think he may be on the mend. I'll carry on what I'm doing. I will take him back to the vets if he's still needing syringing in a weeks time (on vets advice) or if he gets water poop for a while and changes within himself... <3

Right, so he's still not eating on his own but his poops are back to normal and nothing else is out of the ordinary apart from the not eating, however I've seen him sneaking readigrass. I left him without feeding today and he lost 30gs so I know he isn't eating still so will keep syringe feeding and speak to my vet on Monday. x

You see he has no difference in himself, medicine has stopped but weighing him last night he was 920g and today he's 909g so he hasn't eaten over night but I've seen him munching readigrass and even attempting pellets, he'll eat fresh stuff although slowly even though his back teeth were seen to be fine. We're going back to the vets sometime this week for Kenya so as Cally is cage mate, he'll go back and they can check to see if the ulsers on his tongue are still there and such.

His poops started out as sloppy, then formed but almost black, now they're normal colour, dark medium brown but still small but not AS small lol so they'res some improvement.

I struggle getting 60ml in him, he will happily take so much a feeding but eventually starts spitting it out and may even spit it out again on the next feeding a couple of hours later. Any advice on this would be appreciated, I'm not soft in the sense as I do force feed if he's really being difficult (and hasn't eaten for a while) but I don't like doing too much just incase he is full. My partner who feeds him whilst I'm at work isn't like me and will stop when Cally turns his head away or is hard to feed, I don't think Cally likes being fed by him anyways as he can barely get half of what i get into him lol. I'm not TOO worried as he's still bright, airy, running about and yesterday he got his noises back (wheeking). xx

Okay, his poops have gone sloppy again, I have started putting critical feed in his cage on a plate and he's eating it on his own. I will have to get his teeth checked again but I'm afraid it's the same as Africa and it's a failure somewhere. His started like teeth problems.

hiya, Basically one both of guinea pigs are now about 2 and a half years old. My guinea pig fluffy today has stopped eating this afternoon and drinking, as soon as i found out i gave her some recovery and she wasn't even having that properly even though she normally loves this stuff. The vets all shut at 7 but i managed to get an appointment for her. The vet did an examination on her but she said she couldn't find anything wrong. She couldn't really look at the back teeth though as fluffy get biting the little camera thing. I begged the vet to give her some metoclopramide to keep her stomach moving but she refused and said just have to keep giving her recovery sachets and if she doesn't pick up tomorrow then she will have to be sedated to see if her back teeth are ok. What can be happening? I'm so worried and i doubt I'm going to be sleeping tonight as i will be feeding her at regular intervals. She wouldnt even eat her little biscuit treats and shes crazy abt them normally. please help. fluffy has diabetes as well and is blind. The other day we had to take her to the vets as she was limping, thinking it was a sprain or something. the vet gave her metacam, but now I'm worried its something more systemic and she has circulation issues? Her feet today seemed a bit colder than usual. I'm really worrying now xx

What is wrong with Fluffy's leg? Does she hold it up, can you lie her on her back and push very gentle, if theres no resistance but the leg isn't limp, it could be a sprain and with a little pain killer, she should start using it again. Have you by chance dropped her or has she dropped out of your arms when you've put her back in the cage? Kenya's leg went limp 2-3 weeks ago, he sprained it and after 3-4 days of pain killer, the leg starting working again. A guinea pig can live without the use of one leg so as long as they're not in pain it isn't a serious matter in my opinion.

The not eating is though, so syringe feed as much as you can, I aim for 10-20ml a feeding, every few hours a day. My pig will take around 50-60ml a day. Weigh her every morning and monitor her food. Will she eat anything? Have you noticed any difference in her teeth? Gassing a pig to view their teeth is ridiculous, I wouldn't stand for it but I have a specialist who will do my pigs teeth if needed. They wrap the pig in a blanket so they can't use their feet to get free, covering their eyes as well to keep them calm and then have these little spring things that keep the mouth open, I wish vets would learn this technique, I was told how to take blood easier than by syringe too which if my pig needs doing on Saturday I will suggest to the vet instead of letting them use a needle.

Have you seen what her poops are like? Are they normal, small, slushy or change in colour? Don't panic, just keep feeding (slowly) and keep warm.

Anyways, so Cally isn't any better, has lost enough weight to worry me after I tested to see if he was eating, i see him eating dry food, drinking and so on but obviously no where enough so I've started syringe feeding with passion! He's had 50ml today so far and I'm going to squeese as much as possible before bed into him. He hasn't fought much so I'm wondering if he is hungry, he seems more chattery towards his cage mate as well but whenever I go in, there still cuddling. Vets appointment for Kenya and Cally on Saturday again.

Kenya, his cage mate has a mammary tumour and enlarged/swollen bum but no blocked poop, may be a blocked white fluid tube but even after cleaning the area nothign really changes.

After going to the vets on Saturday, the vet is considering referring Cally to a specilist but I've asked to put it off because i haven't fed him at all for 2 days, he lost a few grams at first but at the end of that day, he'd gained about 15g, then lost it again last night but is gaining again... I've seen him sit at the bowl of dry food and eat for over 5 minutes, he's eating readigrass fast now, he seems to have trouble biting carrot still, almost like his top teeth hurt a bit so I'm giving him shavings but it's looking up! Even seen him drink from the waterbottle.

Could someone tell me if i should still syringe feed?

Cally is going without syringing for a few days to see if he's gaining, he is, he gains about 10gs every half day, but loses it by the morning, so in a way, he's maintaining, never going under 809g but never peaking over 825g. Do I need to syringe feed him up to 900g level and then leave him or leave him to build it up and give him high cal foods?

Okay so he's dropped to 790g so I'm preparing syringe feeding today. Please let me know of any high cal fruits or vegs we can get into him to help his weight.

Baby corn is high in calorie, but if he can't eat it then it's not gonna build him up. What is the vet referring him for? Do they believe it's a dental issue? I would be syringe feeding him CC at the moment. When are you seeing the specialist?

He's fine eating, he eats everything I give him but loses weight, anyhow I CCed him yesterday, only 40g but he gained up to 830g and he was still 830 at 12pm today, i saw him eating again, so I'm going to syringe feed him but not make it the 'main' thing, I want him to carry on eating on his own even if it's not enough to keep his weight up.

I don't know, she justed called him a specialist and didn't say anything else. I have a guinea pig dentist, I'm not paying for one that I don't trust... I'll visit my guinea pig dentist again and ask the vet what she means by specialist lol
I'll get some baby corn over christmas for him :)

my fluffy died this morning :( its so sad, been crying all day

Really? :( Did you get her to the vets again? I didn't see you post again after I replied. xx

I'm happy to say Cally is doing okay, after doing the syringe feeding he gained around 50g and is keeping it on, on his own (again this might just be his thing, on off, on off). He is eating veg as fast as the other pigs and I've seen him loads eating dry food and drinking... I'm still going to monitor him everyday but hopefully he's on the mend! I've bought in baby corn to help his weight gain.

Eugh, he's back down to like 700g again, took him to have his teeth checked, his bottom backs were growing over his tongue... they'vebeen cut down but he still wont eat. He beggs for the syringe food so we know hes hungry but it's horrible that he got so well and now is back where he started a few months ago, espcially after we just lost Zambi :(

Right, so back to Pauls last night...

His bottom front teeth too long making them go lose, we've trimmed them down but unsure if they'll have to come out because there so lose atm. His back teeth were overgrown again, had a couple of spurs hitting his tongue and 2 ulsers so no wonder he didn't want to eat. He's eating better now but I've got to treat smoe of the problems and keep syringe feeding him for a while.

When one of my guineas had dental problems I used to grate carrot using the small side of the grater (the side you would use for parmesan cheese, lemon rind etc) then roll the grated carrot into small balls which I could pop in his mouth. I also did it with broccolli stalk and cucumber, although the cucumber was a bit sloshy but it was a way of getting veg into him

I've tried the grated thing, he just sucks on them lol. However he's taken 70ml plus the past two days without struggle :D Today he even begged for more!

I kinda of want to get him back onto his normal food, I used to do that for my pigs which wouldn't get better but Cally just has problem teeth, if it's a nicer thing for him to eat in the cage, I might try the porridge oats. x
