Hi, Kuro, my male 3,5 years old guinea pig is having problems with eating since the end of April. First, we went to a local vet, that gave us an antibiotic because she thought that he had some bacteria in intestines. After a few days or so he started eating again, but it lasted just for a few weeks because unfortunately, the same symptoms returned in even worst way. He wasn't eating, drinking, moving, yawning or talking at all. He was just sleeping all day. I took him to vet on 31. of May in a different city, the vet here said that his back tooths were overgrown quite a lot so they trimmed them, but more than a week after that he is eating just the middle of the cucumber and banana. So he is alive just thanks to RodiCare that I'm feeding him with. His front teeth seem to be fine. But always when I'm trying to put some hay in the back of his mouth, he will just throw it back (looks like vomiting to me) the same way it went in, he is not biting with those back ones at all. He is not losing weight (he used to have more than 1kg. now he has 710-20g for 2 weeks) and is quite active but if he won't start eating than his teeth will start growing too much again and I don't want to put him through that hell again.
If you know about some way to make him eat again I would appreciate your advice, because if he won't start eating till the end of the month I'm thinking about letting him put in narcotics, I don't want him to suffer more than he has to.
*Sorry for my English, I' m not a native speaker.

Can you hand feed Kuro grass, most piggies can’t resist grass and the silica is very good at keeping their teeth worn down. I have a dental piggie and had major problems getting him to eat after a dental with general anaesthetic. What you need is plenty of little strips of vegetables, rolled up dandelion leaves, carrot/beetroot sticks the size of matchsticks to get him tempted to eat again especially if he can’t manage hay at the moment. Try soaking pellets in a little warm water and give off a small spoon and also porridge oats soaked too and mashed banana is good for keeping their weight up.

You need to ask your vet for Metacam pain killer and anti inflammatory medicine. piggies won’t eat if they are in pain either. Hang in there, they can take some time to get eating again. is there a good exotic vet near you who might be more skilled at dentals?

I'm so sorry for your piggy :( i have an almost 2 yo that had a molar trim 3 days ago but he started eating. Can you give him grass? It's not that tough as hay and it's juicy and easier to eat than hay. He still isnt eating all the veggie type i used to feed him so i cut carrots/cucumber/tomatoes/peper in strips and he takes them. I really hope the above work so he can start gaining weight.

It's the same story with grass. The first day after trimming he was interested in it, but he couldn't process it, if I can say it this way, he will just vomited it back untouched. Grated vegetable or fruit too doesn't work, I tried carrots, salad, apples, grapes and many other things but himself alone he will eat just banana, middle of the cucumber, hardened roll or "piΕ‘koty" (don't know how to say it in English, but I will add a picture)
I was giving him some painkillers for 5 days, but they didn't help. I couldn't find any vet specialized in exotic animals. It took me more than 2h to the vet that had equipment for trimming his tooth, but she doesn't know much about guinea pigs, it was her first time doing, but at least she made sure not to hurt him. The fact that I don't have a car makes it harder to get somewhere.

Sadly he can't eat grass as well as carrots, salad, apples, and others, to me he seems kind of depressed about it because he doesn't want to even try it anymore. I have to put it in his mouth against his will, but he is not using the back teeth that he had problems with. So it always ends as a fail. Just can't make him eat anything...

It's the one on the avatar? He is such a beautiful boy. I do not know what else to say ... maybe his teeth weren't trimmed properly ... the thing is that you should take in consideration another vet visit to check his teeth and if you dont want to put him under anaesthetia again there are some oral separetors that can be used. I think these be used while he is awake, maybe member from UK, USA can give a help if they know about them because in Romania, no vet has those. I read on a romanian guinea forum that a member bought them online ... maybe you can find also and take those to the vet with the piggy. I don't want to give advice as i'm not good at piggy care myself, i always have to ask others. I know how it's like to live in a country with no exotic vets.

Yes, it's him. He's an adorable sweetheart. The problem is that the vet I have near doesn't have that oral separator or anything else she could look into his mouth with (it's a really small clinic, she opened it half a year ago) and the other one, that trimmed his teeth, told me that it seems everything perfectly fine, except of that he is not using them to crush food. I'm feeling extremely hopeless because of the way I see it we did and tried everything we could, but nothing helped him. But I'm really thankful for your ideas and advice, I will try finding something that I could look into his mouth with.

I would try to find those separators online and buy them and then i would go with them & piggy to the doctor. There are called bucal pads, here a link Guinea Lynx :: Buccal Pad Separators i hope it's ok with the link from other guinea site, just wanna help the muffin. The romanian girl that bought them online said there are like 3 sizes of them and costed like 7.5 euro/each if i remember. I really hope your pig gets better 😞 keep feeding him critical and give him what he can eat so you can keep him alive

I saw people saying that took their guineas up to 12 days to start eating normally again ... just give him a little bit more time, maybe he will come around and you won't need to torment him again with vet visits .... little steps :) Anyway it's good that he can mentain his weight, if his teeth are ok now after trimming he should start eating. Lots of kisses for him

A little update. I kind of forced my friend to take me with his car to a distant vet clinic that I found out about. Vet there told me that the ones who trimmed his teeth ruined it. The lower teeth are each trimmed differently and the upper ones grow into his cheeks, so they obviously didn't take care of them. They are keeping him there overnight and we will pick him up tomorrow. Hope this will help him, but I'm super angry with the other vet... especially after they acted as if they ate the whole wisdom of the world....

At least they are in the right place now since they saw what was wrong.. fingers crossed everything turns out ok with your Kuro there

Poor muffin ... i don't understand why is how hard to trim equally and why she didn't check the upper ones, you don't need 6 years of medical school to know that teeth need trimming the same, otherwise eating is not possible! They put him under anaesthia again? Did they trim the teeth again? I really hope this will solve the problem, if they manage to fix him then you know where you have to go everytime you have problems with your piggie, even if it's distant. Fingers crossed, keep us updated.

At last, we're home together again. He seems to feel much better and I hope he will start eating soon.
Thank you all for support, your cheers finally reached him ❀

Yes, they had to put him under anesthesia again and trim his teeth correctly, the vet even shows me how does it look in his mouth now, so I can feel calm. ☺

Hoping the teeth trim has been done properly now, if it has he will start to eat again, although his mouth may be a bit sore so will take a little while. we have a vet in the UK who specialises in guinea pig dentistry using a conscious method and we owners with dental piggies travel across the Uk to have them treated by him, we are very lucky.
there are very few vets that can trim guinea pigs teeth properly, hence all the problems that owners have after poor dentals have been performed unsuccessfully which is such a shame.
Hope he makes a speedy recovery x

😍😍😍😍😘😘😘😘😘 lots of kisses for him, hope we recovers soon. He will probably not eat much for a few days so be ready with critical care and other soft things that he likes like banana and cucumber. Also vit C and priobiotics in case he had any antibiotics. I'm so happy for him!

I believe that the vet understood what she was doing. She even explained to me how the slope of teeth has to be, and because the person who trims his teeth before ruined it, she had to trim it a bit more, so it will take some to grow back. Back he is already trying to eat by himself. Although he can move his mouth he doesn't have anything to bite with yet

Wishing him a speedy recovery. This happened to one of my piggies when his first dental was performed wrongly x
