Thank you.
I've got a 7x2 c and c cage so I could take 2 lengths out of it to make it a 6x2 with the 2 space grids used to seperate them temporarily. I want to do what's best it's just hard.to know what that is sometimes.
My vet managed to squeeze me in today at 12 so we'll need what happens then.

Just back from the vets.
After I told her exactly what Toast has been doing, barbaring herself and being aggressive with Beans, and then having a feel of Toast's belly, she thinks cysts on the ovaries is a possibility.

She's advised a few things;
  1. Temporarily seperate them for now. I've put a divider in their cage so instead of them having a 7x2 c and c cage with a 2x2 loft, it's now a 6x3 cage with a divider giving them 3x3 each.
  2. Toast has been given a pain killer, Loxicome, to help with any pain she may be in which could be causing her to rip her hair out.
  3. I've to go back tomorrow for scans and xrays to find out exactly what's going on, she'll need her little belly shaved.
I feel so helpless and I feel awful for dividing them. I know it's for the best so they're both not overly stressed and at least now Toast can't bully Beans.
But it's so horrible to see them seperate. They look so confused as to why they can't get to each other. :(

I also feel bad that they're only in a 3x3 each. I know this isn't great but I physically don't have any more room to expand.

They've been in their seperate bits now for 30 minutes. I've put their food bowls, water bottles and hay piles in the same.place so they can eat together, and they keep having little kisses through the bars.

Does anyone have any experience with cysts on ovaries/barbaring? And on top of that Toast has her URI to deal with..

Am I doing the best thing for Toast? Are these problems things that can be fixed or am I just delaying the inevitable? :(

This is what their set up looks like now. No ramps or hay lofts now:soz:

They have still got lovely cages and can interact with each other. It's not forever and both will benefit from the break.

Violet had ovarian cysts that made her aggressive and very unhappy. While she was in her rampaging stage she made Connnie so unhappy that Connie was barbering herself. Violet's cysts were large and starting to press on a nerve so we decided to have her spayed. Since the spay Violet is fine and so is Connie. Both very much happier.

How old was Violet at the time of the op?

Already Beans seems happier in herself now that she's got breathing space but can still have interaction through the bars, they keep having little kisses.

I'm so worried for Toast, bladder infection, URI and now possible ovarian cysts.

As she's a rescue I'm not sure of age but we think she's around 3 maybe even 4.

The vets also going to check for stones, incase that's what's causing the pain when pressing against her tummy

:tu: Glad your girls are happier. It's lovely they are having kisses. And the cage set up is just fine.

Violet is also a rescue and somewhere between 4 and 5. There are hormone treatments - it doesn't always have to mean a spay even if she has cysts. Just wait and see how her tests go tomorrow. Good luck x

Sounds like your vet is on the ball and good idea getting the xrays done. We've had two piggies with cysts, there are options not just surgical if this is the case. Did the vet check the bald patch over under the chin? Any signs of dandruff there?

With our first piggies Pitch had a season where she harassed Putt non stop for 48hrs we had to separate for a day or two with a divider, things did go back to normal after that - we never found out what caused this particularly aggressive season

Have a virtual hug, you are really going through it at the moment, remember you are an excellent piggy mum x

Yeah she had a look and there was nothing there, just clean pink skin.

Does anyone have any experience with setting up some kind of payment plan with vets?

In the last 2 weeks I've spent over £300 on Toast. Tomorrow is going to be a scan and xray so I have no idea how much that will be. Do vets ever allow for it to be payed up over the space of a couple months?
Thanks to you all for all the advice and help:)

It varies from clinic to clinic, so you need to speak to your vets.

I would speak to your vets - you are obviously a good client so hopefully you can agree a payment programme.
Piggies can be very expensive. I've spent a fortune since New Year.

I'm just off the phone to her.
It's not normally something they do a lot but if Toast needs an op it will be a considerable amount of money so they will talk with me about some kind of payment plan if that ends up happening, which is quite a relief

Now that the pigs have been seperate for a few hours, I'm a bit concerned by Toasts poos...

Beans has done about a million where as toast has only done 5 little small poos...
I just want to get tomorrow out of the way so I know what's wrong with Toast and how to treat it..

Have you been weighing Toast? You may find the vet visit has upset her guts a little bit. I must admit, I hate the waiting prefer to know what I'm dealing with. Good Luck tomorrow.

Yeah I've been weighing her every day since she's been ill the past couple weeks, she's been a bit up and down but nothing to worry about too much. She's eating just like she always has so that's good.

Thank you, it's such a horrible feeling waiting to find out if she's got cysts that may require and op. My poor wee piggy I wish I could make her all better

I've found out this fortnight just how much. But there's no way I couldn't have her treated, I'd spend any amount to help my little Toasty, as would most of us who adore our piggies:nod:

Oh heck just caught up with this thread!
You are fantastic if not for your care and personal knowledge of Toast you'd not have picked up these symptoms :hug:
I'll have fingers crossed for little Toast :luv::luv:
Your temp cage setup is great. They can still see and interact. Even when I separated our boys we too had wire divider and they also had floor time together.
Take care of yourself get some rest if possible as you will be nurse full time when she gets home xxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you so much.
One of the things I love about this forum is that everyone is so supportive.
And everyone here seems to understand that they're not "just rodents", like so many people see them, it shouldn't matter whether human or animal, big or small,
I absolutely adore my piggies. They are my world and I'd do anything to make them happy and keep them safe:luv:

That's Toasty dropped off at the vets. She'll be there for a while so I've made her a little packed lunch of nuggets, veg and camomile hay :)

She was so nervous and anxious I had a little cry leaving her :(

The nurse was so reassuring, said the cage Toast will be in has little hidey houses so she'll feel secure and she's got her little fleece with her, it has Beans' smell on it so hopefully she'll be a bit relaxed.

Now for the wait...:soz:

Just off the phone to the vets.
They managed to get the x ray and scans done without sedation, so that's good.

I've to go pick her up at 430 and they'll tell me the results. I just can't wait to get her home, poor Beans has been pining for her a bit, keeps going up to the divider, eeking and looking about as if she's trying to find her

It's always a relief from the vet calls to say they are ready to be collected. I'm sure Toast will be happy to get home!

Aw bless Beans, she'll be missing her friend.

Always good to get that call - waiting is always anxious. She must have been very cooperative for them to do what they needed without anaesthetic so that's good too.

I'm very surprised, knowing how anxious she can get I thought they might have to. Very happy to be getting her back soon, so is Beans :yahoo:

So its good news and bad news.

Good news is there isn't any cysts in the ovaries and no bladder stones, but the xray did show slight bloat so I've been given Emeprid 1ml 2 time a day.
The bad news is the x ray also showed Toast has arthritis in her back leg so she's been given Loxicome 0.4 mls once a day for pain relief and this may be long term. I've got an appointment next week to see if toast is feeling better and the aggressive/barbering had stopped, as this is most probably because of the pain with the bloat and arthritis.

My question is, can I give emeprid, Loxicome, Sulfatrim (she's already on this for the URI) all at the same time? As in one after the other or do they need to be staggered ? (In the excitement of getting toast back I forgot to ask this)

:like: That there's no cysts and that the X-rays showed reasons for her bad mood and barbering. Bloat and arthritis are both very painful for piggies so it's good to have pain relief and emeprid. You can also give her Woodwards gripe water (from the chemists) as that helps clear gas and they like the taste.

I've given metacam and emeprid at the same time with no ill effects. Not sure about giving antibiotics at the same time, though so best check with the vet.

I'm very glad your girl is home safe and sound. Hope she and Beans are pleased to see each other

I'm kicking myself now because I should have asked, I was just so excited to get her back and also panicked about the arthritis that I wasn't thinking :hmm:

She didn't mention that they should/shouldn't be given at the same time..

Don't blame yourself - emotions run riot in the vets and you get information overload (well I do). I think I'd stagger the AB from the others for now until you've checked with the vet about when to give them. Hugs to you Toasty and Beams x
