My rabbit Chip has been to the vets today and has been diagnosed with E.cuniculi which is a parasite. Is it pretty much deadly, but there is a chance it can be 'controlled' The vet then asked me if i wanted to start her on a medication, but when i asked is it contagious he said yes... So he advised to put her to sleep for the sake of my other rabbits.

I'm so confused and i don't know what to do...should i try and help Chip and risk infecting my other 20 rabbits or should i put her to sleep?

:'( :'( :'( I can't believe what's happening :(

Oh sweetie what an awful situation to find yourself in. It really is going to have to be a decision you need to make with the advice of your vet and any other knowledge bunny owners. I'm a guinea girl myself so can't offer any advice, just wanted to say hang on in their and I'm thinking of you. Big hugs.

I'm soooo sorry to hear about your little hunny bun. :( It sounds like quite a tough decision..... :-\

Is there any way you could separate chip? You would have to be extra careful of not contaminating the others though.

If he is likely to suffer maybe it might be for the best to let him go now while he might be feeling a bit perky and isnt suffering.

Oh gosh... its so hard to know really.... I dont envy you at all. I think you'll know what the right decision is in your heart.

Hope this helps. I havent had any rabbits before so I cant really offer you any more advice sorry. Good luck though... will be thinking of you and Chip.

Oh sweetheart.
Your heart must be breaking
You have to do the right thing for Chip and also for the other buns.

Likewise I know nothing about buns but good luck. You have support here whatever you decide O0

I am so sorry to read what is happening. :'(

Can you get a second opinion before you make any decsions ? ask another vet, or even better contact a good rescue who am sure see a lot of buns with EC, and what they would do.

I am sure it can be treated, but I dont know much about EC.

My thoughts are with you whatever you decide.

Hugs.

Deb x

I'm so sorry you have to make this choice. i don't know much about rabbits myself, but maybe you should go to another vet for a second opinion. good luck with your decision. (((((hugs)))))

Thank god you haven't made the decision yet. A few questions. How does the vet know she has EC? What sort of condition is she in? What did the vet say? :)

She has the classic signs of EC. She doesn't have any signs of ear infections nor anything else. He was 99% sure she has it! She is in ok condition, she can't walk without stumbling and rolling over, she can't hold her head up, she can't eat or drink without help, but still has a good apatite. The vets have said that it's best for her and the other rabbits is that she should be pts! As there is no known cure for EC she will always be at risk of infecting the others...can i really risk 20 other lives? I love her so much but i love the others too!

I hate to tell your this but there is a chance your other rabbits are already affected. Your vet should have told you this. My rabbit was exactly like yours before it passed away. You are going to have to talk to your vet about what damage has been done to Chip e.g. kidneys. Get a blood test done and then the vet will be able to tell you what her chances are. I am so sorry you have to make this decision. :) I have PM'd you all the information I have on this parasite. :) The information was supplied to me from a woman who knows quite a bit about the parasite. :)

Hi

I have a friend who has 15 rabbits and has had rabbits with EC and the vet suggested that ALL the rabbits were treated for it at the same time with panacur, it did help relieve the symptoms in the one rabbit diagnosed, and nobody else caught it.
Hope this helps
Sue

Taking what piglover has said it might be a good idea to treat the others just in case. I hope the information I have sent you has helped. :)

Thank you, it was very informative. The vet never said anything about treating my other rabbits, I've never seen this vet before so i might make another apt. and ask to see a vet i know!

I'm truly devastated and i can't stop crying :'(

I have just rang the vets to ask if i can speak to someone...they are ringing me back as they are all busy at the moment but i will ask if they think we should treat them all O0

I know how you feel, the sight of a once healthy rabbit so vulnerable and needy is truly heartbreaking. You will have to make a decision soon as Chip go down hill quite quickly depending how bad she is. Whatever you decide I am sure it will be the right decision for her. I am so sorry Chip has this terrible parasite. :'(

*hugs* Have you tried Davisons on I think it's ilkiston lane on the 28 bus root?
It's an excellent vet, my mum (pumpkin piggie) and hilery (hils78) say its brilliant!

No i use Gamston Pets4Vets. they are brilliant with my rabbits and i always trust their decision. I just haven't had this vet before and like to have Anne, who is more knowledgeable about rabbits!

Edited: I meant Vets4Pets ::)

Oooo yes, my auntie lives round the corner from there, vets4pets saved her king charles spaniels! They are excellent!
(Her king charles spaniels have passed away now, got a piccy of them on my wall :smitten: but vets4pets certainly saved them for some extra years! O0)

I've had a call back from the vets and they said I don't need to treat all the others :-\

I am going in tomorrow lunch time to pick up a wormer type drug as they had none in today and Dean has said he will take her upto his house as he hasn't got any rabbits, that way i can atleast know i gave her a chance before we put her to sleep!

She will be on this for 10 days and i then i have to decide what is best for Chip.

I think you have done the right thing it is best to eliminate all the options first, its good you have somewhere to take her too good luck keep us updated!

Awwwh best of luck for Chip! I hope she does get better for you!
And even if it does come to putting her to sleep, at least she knows you love her and always will and have done the best for her! I really do hope Chip gets better or improves for you! O0

x

I think you have made the right decision by giving her a chance. Everyone has such nice vets, my vets would never take an animal home with them or even keep it in the surgery without charging a fortune. Is he charging anything for having her for this period? I hope she pulls through. :)

Dean is my boss lol not my vet. I can rely on him for anything and we are pet sitters i know he will take good care of her :)

Sweetie i've pm's you i wish you ALLLLL the very very best :-* :-* :-*
What ever decision you have to make i'm right here to support you all the way, you will know what has to be done, you know your furbabies better than anybody O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
<hugs> to you for comfort
Loads of love Glynis and Duke xxxxxxxxxxx

Oh I thought is was your vet. Keep us updated. :)

I no nothing about Rabbits but I know that you will do everything you can for your bunnies. I feel for you I really do. Like Ali said vets4pets at Gamston are briliant and I do hope Chip has a happy outcome for you. Thinking of you

Thank you everyone. You've all been a great help :smitten: I've been going out to look at the rest of the bunny mob and i havn't seen any signs of it yet, but of course i'll keep an eye on them all, especially my older ones.

Chip is 7yrs old BTW so i hope she has some fighting spirit left in her!

I'm sure she has. If the outcome is not a happy one, 7 years for a rabbit is a good age. O0

Awwwh wow 7, good age! O0
Yep come on Chip! Show us your fighting side! Ninja style! ;)

Oh sweetheart she is 7 oh she had such a long a lovely life with you I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and Chip.
