I health check all my piggies & all the rescue piggies every week. They get weighed, nails clipped, groomed & hair trimmed if necessary. I also check for anything that shouldn't be there or wasn't there last week.

When I checked Fern yesterday morning. I immediately noticed a hard swelling round her pubic area. I knew this needed attention but she was OK in herself, eating etc & not crying in pain.

I made an appointment to see our vet & took her in at 12.45. It was found that she had a stone & when examined she bled & was in a lot of discomfort so Dominika took her to be treated under anaesthetic. 30 minutes later she was back with me a little groggy but minus a large stone & a small one which had probably broken away from the large one when being manipulated. She's been back home now for 6 hours & appears none the worse for wear. I'm only glad that I do check them all weekly because this could have gone unnoticed until if was causing her pain. Here's 2 pictures, one of Fern with the stones & also with 5p coin to give you an idea of the size xxFern with stones 2016-06-20.webp Fern's stones 2016-06-20.webp

Such a good lesson! I am glad she is doing well. When you are doing these checks, besides what you mentioned above do you just look at the privates or do you feel/check them in a certain way.

It's more a visible check for blood, discharge or just caked on poo. I could see that she was swollen & when I touched the swelling it was really hard x

Poor Fern, glad she is recovering well. Well done you for spotting the problem before it got worse.

Glad to hear she got prompt treatment and is doing well. Mine get a weekly check over as well though it didn't help my poor Buddy back in the day as he had an abscess that was deep seated so by the time it was palpable it was huge and he did survive the night after the operation. Still I am glad to know that through regular checking he didn't suffer with it anywhere like he could have done.

What a stone! So glad shes neither up or down with it all! X

Ouch! That's a corker! Hope little Fern is feeling better soon. Good job she has you and Dominika on the case.

Well spotted! I'm glad she's doing as though nothing has happened! Wishing her a speed recovery

She's 100% better today, hardly any swelling & the hardness has gone. She's going to be sore but she's on painkiller for a couple of days x
