The mystery of Ginger

Hello,

Over the past few weeks, I have been taking Ginger to the vets. They told me to keep a daily weight diary to keep an eye on her weight (I weighed weekly anyway). She is just over a year and a half.

They’ve checked her teeth, front, back, sides of mouth but said the teeth looked fine. The vets said if I was worried to book her in for an xray.

She is nibbling her veg not actively eating it properly and leaving most. Nibbling hay as well but eating more of that. Can guineas just go off veg like we can with food?

I’ve weighed her just now and it’s the lowest it has been over the past few weeks at 1138g. She was averaging between 1144g to 1178g. Before this, she was averaging between 1189g to 1220g.

She is going to the toilet well and drinking. I noticed she was in heat yesterday so maybe that helped drop a little more.

Here’s some recent weights and the before weights to compare.

I’m just really worried

Thank you

She’s going back to the vets on Monday to decide whether xray is the best step forward.

I’m so sorry Ginger is causing you concern. Unexplained weight loss is so hard for a vet to find the cause. Good luck at the vets on Monday. I hope they can find the cause. 🤞🏻

Hi

It could be a pain issue (an not necessarily in the mouth but elsewhere in the body), something digestive or metabolic rather than a dental issue. Mystery weight loss can have so many widely different causes that is my least favourite symptom of all.

Wishing Ginger and you all the best with your vet trying to work out the problem resulting from such a vague symptom.

She had a few on going gagging issues a few weeks ago which made me think of a teeth or mouth issue. She has stopped doing that so far
