At Friday's weekly weigh in Timmy had lost 120gms. There had been no indication there was a problem, he had been standing at the bars waiting for veggies and pellets as usual and taking veg from my hand. Of course it doesn't mean he was eating hay or all his veg, Freddie the hoover will have had any surplus and hidden the evidence.
I spoke to a vet (not exotic) on Saturday who said to syringe feed him and try to keep him hydrated as he had been seen for something similar before and an xray and urine tests had not come up with an answer. At that time it was a diagnosis of cystitis. The vet didn't have any appointments and said to phone Tuesday to get an appointment with our usual vet for more tests.
Have been syringe feeding and watering, he's on Metacam for arthritis anyway, he's having Cystease in case it's a cystitis flare although no squeaky weeing or blood spots this time. Fibreplex in case it's a tummy issue.
He started out taking grass and bits of herbs and veg along with the syringe feed. Yesterday he got difficult to syringe and refused all veg etc. His eyes looked very sunken and he was miserable.
This morning he had maintained yesterdays weight and his eyes look more normal, he is moving around the cage a bit and has eaten half a dandelion leaf, a slice of cucumber and a pinch of grass as well as a couple of syringe feeds.
Only another guinea pig owner will understand how much that slice of cucumber, grass and dandelion leaf means!
