Hi Claire

If Ralphie is taking 60ml Recovery over the period of 24 hours then you are doing very well. Is he taking this without gagging? Have any of the vets taken an X ray to rule out obstruction further down his system?

It is possible that what with the GA's, antibiotics etc that Ralphie might have a lot of gas/air in his digestive system. This is what happened to Grommie after his teeth were done (he stopped eating solids and was puffed up) and when they took an X ray to rule out obstruction they found instead that almost all his stomach was full of air. See my previous post for treatment.

Point is - this will take more time than perhaps we are conditioned to believe is right......and will tax your patience and input to the limit...BUT:
There is hope!

For Grommie: The feeds were small and frequent to resemble their grazing habits and hopefully help stimulate the intestines to move properly. He also got 0.1ml metacam each morning during the first feed and 0.15m infacol every other day. (NB I only gave him infacol because the vet had ruled out obstruction by X ray) At first I fed him 5ml Recovery (plus mashed poo) each hour during the day, then gradually increased to 10ml every 2 hours during the night and finally 20ml every 4 hours.
I never fed more than 20ml in any one sitting as I was told that is their max stomach capacity. It was several days before he started picking at hay/lettuce and dried food. I carried on with 20ml Recovery two or three times a day to supplement what he was starting to eat on his own (and keep his fluid levels up) until full eating and drinking habits restored after about a week.

It worked for me...I was knackered at the end...but here he is

Courage ma souer......baby steps....concentrate at the moment on keeping him maintained and buy time to see AP

AP.... you are a complete Hunney.......

loving the mashed poo:)):)):))he does gag while eating the recovery but not has much has when he tries to eat the hard stuff even eating his poo makes him gag has it would me:)):)) he does have the full 60mls of recovery and water in between and little bits of cabbage and bits of his food and hay all hand feed has he just cant get it in his mouth on his own i have to roll up the cabage and put into his mouth behind his front teeth but it does come out a few times it also takes a long time for him to chew it..think i will try the mashed poo:)>>>:)>>>:))well not me i mean ralphie

Some positive news at last for you Claire, I hope now he is on the road to recovery. It certainly seems that way though, if he has the strength to run of with the carrot :)).

Great news, here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery now he has a nice fancy-lady to impress!xoxo

There are some fantastic updates, I am delighted to hear how well he is doing at the moment. xx

no problem, its also easier for the fish to eat because it becomes fleshy. You wouldnt want to eat an apple with your gums now would you? Thats what its sorta like for the fish if they have it raw.
