I'm worried sick, I came home from my course this evening and Paddy seems like he is retching / trying to vomit, and clear liquid keeps coming out of his mouth. His chin is wet, and as he has been spitting all of his syringe feeds out today. I've tried to look inside of his mouth to check for blockages, but he wouldn't let me. I've felt his tummy and it feels soft, other than his body being puffed up in pain (possibly from his dental work, and/or bumble foot infection, for which he is currently being treated), he doesn't seem to be bloated. I've tried to massage his tummy a few times and got him to walk a little on the carpet just in case, but he is currently sat hunched up in bed, making pained noises.

I definitely can't afford an emergency vet, or even the daytime exotics vet really, as all his treatment to date has cost me hundreds of pounds, and i'm living off a student loan at the moment, so any more vet expense is going to put my in financial difficulty. I'm devastated and I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice of things I could try to help him?

If he's still like this in the morning, I fear that I may have to have him PTS.

Oh no, how stressful. Obviously you know the vet is the first suggestion you’ll hear. I think if it were my pig and I had some metacam in the cupboard I might give a dose to try and keep them comfortable but of course I’d be doing that off my own back, it’s not a recommendation, I just wouldn’t know what else to do.

Hope he’s ok. Lots of cuddles for you both.

Yeah he has daily Metacam 0.3 ml twice a day, half a tablet of Tramadol/ Tralieve twice a nxday, and 0.2 ml of Doxycycline antibiotics once per day. Plus his 3 syringe feeds (4 if my Mum can give him an extra one). He has twice daily foot washes in diluted HibiScrub, and Preparation H cream (to sooth and moisturise his feet, it was recommended on GuineaLynx, and the vet said if it's gentle then it's ok to use) He still seems to be in pain though. :(

BIG HUGS

It sounds like blockage either at the back of his mouth or in this throat to me; I have had piggies losing the ability to swallow, developing a large swelling at the back of the throat or whose gullet has swollen shut from an infection. your symptoms can also apply to fungal thrush in the mouth/throat area. The 'vomit' is a mixture of saliva that cannot be swallowed anymore with bits of food and gunk in his mouth.

Please be aware that the inability to swallow means that he can also no longer process any medication given by mouth. :(

Please have him seen as soon as possible in case it is something curable; tomorrow morning it may be too late.

My thoughts are with you both at this difficult time. Sending you a big hug and healing vibes.

Huge hugs, please let us know what vet says

I decided to have Paddy PTS this morning. The vet nurse checked down his throat and couldn’t see anything, checked all his teeth, lungs etc. He had developed a chest infection and had started retching up blood and was in a lot of pain. I just didn’t want him to suffer any more so I let him go. I feel broken.

Thank you for your kind words everyone. He is at peace now, and with his brothers Rohan and Seamus.

I’ve just seen this @-Drezella- and I am so sorry. You could not have done more for him. Popcorn free little fellow.
