I get very nervous about bladder problems, as I've lost two piggies to that in the last year. So when Tofu (4yo boar) started losing some weight and got mucky from sitting in pee, I took him straight to the vet. He was squeaking when she felt his bladder. She put him on baytril for two weeks and said to keep a close eye, as there was nothing definitive pointing to a UTI but it could have been an early one brewing

He's been on baytril for a week now. He has perked up and is much happier, but I've also seen a couple of bright red pees. He's squeaking occasionally when he pees, but only maybe three times in the last week, nothing like as often as when I've had previous piggies with bladder problems. I've got some vet bed for his favourite nap spots, but I'm still needing to give him regular bum baths/wipe downs (every couple of days).

He's also had several giant (and I do mean giant) sperm rods. This is the fourth one I've removed this week. 1ml syringe for comparison purposes

He gets sperm rods occasionally, more so since he's had arthritis, but nothing like this frequency (or size!). Could they be a sign of something wrong? I am dreading that he might have a bladder stone, he's turning five in January and with his general condition I'd be very wary of putting him through surgery. He's on both metacam & gabapentin for his arthritis and he has impaction too, as well as problems with his eyesight

His weight is down to 1103g this morning. He's normally 1250g, he's been down to 1120g the last few weeks, hence the vet trip & baytril. I'm offering him some critical care with Pro-C mixed in, but I'm not sure how much I should be aiming to get in him. He was maintaining around 1120g until this morning

Oh I’m sorry to read about lovely Tofu - I can’t offer any advice but I just wanted to offer support and love for this beautiful piggy ❤️
I hope your Vet can help Tofu

Thank you 😊 in some ways I’m reassured that he is doing better on the baytril. In other ways I’m worried, especially about his weight. Just not sure if I should be expecting/helping him put it back on, or if this is a new normal for him. I know he’s getting older

He’s still a perfect boy to me, even if he is a bit mucky 🥰

He’s just devoured 9 syringes of critical care without complaint. Any more than that, I have to force him. I haven’t been pushing it because he was maintaining his weight alright (though not gaining back to his old normal)

I think I’ll see what his weight does in the morning and go from there. If he loses again, I’ll have to persuade him to eat more. He did beg for a pea flake and then dive into a fresh hay pile right after

I’m sorry to hear this.
I agree that I would see what his weight is in the morning and adjust syringe feeding accordingly.
I hope he is ok

That's 9 syringes more than I could get into Mourne, lol. 🤞🏻firmly crossed for Tofu tomorrow!

It is the most he’s had since this started, lol. Before now I was lucky to get 3-5ml into him, but as he was maintaining his weight I didn’t push it

Will see what his weight does in the morning. As long as he doesn’t lose again I’m reluctant to force him too much - with his age he might just not recover back to his previous weight

No soft poos on the baytril which I am relieved about! And I can attest that he still had an appetite from the way he grabbed the syringes and refused to let go 😂

Tofu’s weight this morning is basically the same as yesterday - 1108g. He was maintaining around 1120g earlier in the week. His old normal was 1250g before this UTI. He’s very active in the cage, no more bloody/red pee, but he does still have a wet bottom

I’m going to keep offering critical care, but I’m not sure if I should I be trying to get closer to syringe feeding amounts into him. (40ml+?) I don’t know if I should expect him to recover back to his old weight tbh. He does feel light when I hold him, but he’s not especially bony

He’s eating all his pellets and veggies, and he definitely has an appetite for hay - though I know you can’t tell intake by eye, he’s sitting in it munching a lot

Oh, I hope you get better soon Tofu 💜

When my Joe had a stone, the vet told me to give him Alfavet UROcare as a part of the treatment. I didnt have the chance to try it with Joe, but I had the chance to try other Alfavet products (akut and Immune). I'm very satisfied with their products. The akut really does magic with upset tummies. Maybe worth a try to see if the UROcare can help Tofu and maybe prevent further UTIs?

Thank you, I’ll look into this 😊

Tofu just took 13 syringes of critical care! Quite happy with that. He was knocking over the bowl to get the next one because I wasn’t being fast enough lol

That’s a positive sign. He’s obviously got a healthy appetite.
Have you tried putting a small dish of the syringe feed into the cage as a supplement to the syringes ?
I used to do that and although the cagemates always helped eat it, the piggy who needed it did get a bit extra too

I tried this today after his feed and Eddie tucked in, which did get Tofu to eat a bit more too! I’ve saved the dish to give them a bit more later. Thanks for the tip 😊

13! I thought 9 was a feat. Well done lovely Tofu and get well soon.

Got 12 in him today as well! Very pleased he hasn’t lost his appetite 😍

His weight was the same today as the last two days. Glad he isn’t losing, but I’d be happier if he put a bit more on. He did refuse to give up the critical care syringes again so I’m taking that as a good sign lol

Thought I’d give a second feed a go to see if he’ll take more if I spread it out and he took another 10! So that’s 22ml today total

If it has an impact on his weight, I might bump up to 2-3 feeds a day like I did with Patches when he was sick. If he can regain the weight I’d be happier, but I know with his age it might not happen

He is still squeaking occasionally when he pees. Not often, and no more red/bloody pees that I’ve seen. Got another week on the baytril before I decide whether to take him back to the vet or not
