Truffle and Polo

Thinking about little Polo. I hope the X-ray comes back today. He's a trooper.
Thank you. Yes, he is a brave guinea pig. After weeks of having yummy medication syringed into his mouth, he has become less tolerant of being stroked and unless I stroke him very carefully, he shakes his head and often even runs off 🙁 His tummy lump thing seems to be the same size 🙁 How long was Stripe on Baytril? I don't know if we will ever be able to stop the stuff. I wish they would make it taste less yuk 😝

Polo my buddy, I never had any antibiotics. Kongo said it tastes like heaven, and love from mama is the best care. Listen to nanny Kongo, take your meds and let mama cuddle you ❤️ Ah, now I hear Kongo tell METACAM! from the RB. I dont know what that is, but I like syringes!

Hi Kongo 😎🌈

Yummy should be yukky 😛

The X ray results have come back. There seems to be a problem in Polo's lung area and ears. It might be ax sort of calcified bulla picture, but I will need to ask the vet for more information. There is inflammation in his ears and if he has earache, that would help to explain why he doesn't want to be stroked too much. A further CT scan is indicated, but this would be a referral and might be costly ❤️

Oh no polio! You poor little thing.

Can't they just try a couple months of antibiotics and then do another X-ray?

CT scan is too much.

I'm wondering if a sedated X ray would be enough along with blood tests. The inner ear isn't calcified, just opaque. It may be just the start of CB syndrome 🙁

A conscious X-ray was enough for Stripe to be diagnosed with something in his lungs, an ear infection. Then on a second X-ray when he was done with antibiotics, calcification.

How long will he be on the baytril?

My dentistvet talked about 3D-scan with Joe to really understand why he had the toofie-problems he had. CBCT-scan? We never did one though, we had to travel to another city. If Joe had been two years younger and not a mental nutcase I might had consider it, but. I guess its kind of expensive though, but maybe worth to ask your vet about?

I think the Baytril will need to be ongoing as without it he starts wheezing badly. Thank you for the update on Stripe's CB stages. I hope we can get the better of this ❤️🙏

Thank you. Yes, Polo is middle aged at least. The length of time under GA is a worry too.The MRI I was offered was in another city too. Crossing London at morning rush hour with a guinea pig in a carrier hoping the trains are running for an early morning clinic sounds rough. Missing out slot would cost a lot 🙁

What kind of plan do the vet have from what you know now? Can Polo try a longer course of antibiotics like @Ramia said?
Even though I'm very worried about sedation because of bad experiences, I also have to remind myself that the majority of times it ended very well. None of my boys has been very young, Djingis the youngest with his two years old at the time. But logistics (and price) is always a fact to consider.

Hand in there Polo ❤️

I'm not sure what the options are, I will need to discuss them with the vets. I hope an X ray with sedation will be enough to secure treatment. I need to research ear issues and lung problems. The antibacs work, so it must be an infection. In humans you might start looking at ways of combining antibiotics and delivering them. In guinea pigs, there is only the oral syringe, unless there is a safe option to apply ear drops 🙁 No steroids or penicillin. The nebuliser might help.
