Truffle and Polo

I'm not sure what the options are, I will need to discuss them with the vets. I hope an X ray with sedation will be enough to secure treatment. I need to research ear issues and lung problems. The antibacs work, so it must be an infection. In humans you might start looking at ways of combining antibiotics and delivering them. In guinea pigs, there is only the oral syringe, unless there is a safe option to apply ear drops No steroids or penicillin. The nebuliser might help.

Did Polo try other kinds of antibiotics, or did the vet mention that?
I'm not very good at different antibiotics and whats best for what, my vet usually prescribes Bactrim (Trimetoprimsulfa). Joe once got Azhitromycin and some diarrhea on the mail, but he was very sensitive. Bactrim was a better option for him, and besides from some loser stools none of boys didnt suffer from any side effects. Maybe it slowed down Kongos appetite a little bit the first days, but that could also be the URI... and it was Kongo, he still ate for at least two elephants.

We've tried doxy and cotrimoxazole and one other, but one by one rather than all at once. Enro or Baytril is holding the wheezing off for now, but the bugs might be mutating. I should have gone in for a full X ray last year

I think there is opacity but not deep calcification. It might not be advanced yet

Hey Kylie here,
I'm sorry to disrupt your romantic chatter yet again but as far as I know boars ... not counting Pino who doesn't really have a clue ... your thoughts wouldn't be in the lines of burring your nose in Mabel's fur but other things altogether when you would be in the same cage together.
I lot of things would happen that would have made Miss Bramble blush before she was married.

Was Stripe on more than one antibiotic at any stage? We used Doxy in the beginning but the wheezing kept coming back. But now the same thing is happening with Baytril

The problem with costs is that if course I have two piggies and I need to have money for Truffle in case he becomes unwell too So far he has been well, perky and cheeky. They are in separate cages and I wash my hands and equipment between cages now. I think the more conservative option of a sedated X ray next month might be the choice I need to make. Polo was wheezing for a short while this morning but then coughed and it stopped. Long term, things don't look good. But he is about five years old I think. If he makes another two years I have to be realistic about his expected life span. I hope he is happy and that I am giving him a good life

Polo was wheezing this morning for a couple of hours and then at breakfast time it went away. He's had Baytril and some Metacam and hasn't been wheezing again. He's still not keen on head rubs at the moment whereas up to a couple of weeks ago he used to love being stroked. When he's in my lap he puts up with being stroked, but in the cage he flicks his head and runs away
He seems less smelly today and I didn't get any wee on my hand while doing meds, so perhaps if he has a UTI it's in abeyance. His lump seems the same size. The X ray didn't pick up any mass effect, but a sedated X ray would give a clearer picture. The vet suggested doing an ultrasound at the same time, so I will look at the cost of the two together as it may shed more light on what is going on. I don't know what more can be done for him other than long term Baytril until it stops being effective, a combination of antibiotics, ear drops (but I don't know if there is such a thing as an ear drop for rodents as I think most ear drops for pets probably have steroids in them) or trying to use the nebuliser to administer antibiotics. I Must try F10 again, but the last time I used it in the nebuliser, Polo developed clay-like poops which were quite scary. I think I could have made a little bowl from them. The probiotics and Truffle's poop soup got him back to normal thankfully
