Uh Oh - blood in urine, advice please!

I just typed out a big long response and lost it mallethead

I tried out a new vets today as I didn't completely trust my old one, Midlands vets in Leyton. They do specialise in exotics so I was hoping for a better experience.

I don't feel like I've got a firm diagnosis so I still feel unsure of what's going on, however he has put her on a course of baytril 0.2ml until the course is finished. He basically said he didn't want to rush into things ie x-ray and wanted to give her the baytril and see how she goes. I think he said the urine sample detected blood but again he didn't really talk me through me it - next time I need to be assertive and ask more questions.

I liked that he didn't inject the baytril like they do at my old vets. He also asked me about her vit C intake, is this a sign of a cavy savy vet or would any old vet ask about this? It was so much cheaper than my old vets too, they charged me £80 for Dottie for exactly the same thing, the new vets charged £35. He did start to tell me that he doesn't think diet makes much of a difference and some piggies are more vulnerable to these types of things than others, but I guess that is an age old debate!

Anyhow, we'll go with the antibiotics - he didn't suggest any probiotics (sign of a poor cavy savy vet?!) He did empty her bladder though which I thought was pretty cool! I apologised for her peeing on him like an idiot mallethead:))

Anyhow, opinions please re the new vets...I really want to find one I can trust! Fingers crossed for Mabel getting better soon (although if I hadn't of noticed when I cleaned them out I don't think I could tell that anything is wrong with her!)

Thanks again for all your help and advice!

Oh and Jo - I don't feed redigrass! Not sure why her wee is so chalky? Maybe it's our tap water, I do have to de-scale the kettle regularly!

Did the vet have any idea what those marks were?

Nope - I got him to check and he tried to wipe it off but didn't really have anything to say about them...they're still there! Wish I had asked more questions but I felt like I was talking too much as it was! mallethead Can't believe I didn't specifically ask what the urine showed, it would be documented in her notes though right? So maybe I could call and ask, would the receptionist be able to tell me over the phone?

Yeah give a call in the morning. Just say you were worried at the time and can't remember what he said. If you have more questions, ask them to ask the vet to call you at a time that's convenient for him. Most vets are more than happy to discuss things further.

Ok will do. Can't believe he was able to just empty her bladder like that! We could have easily got a urine sample there and then! :))

I'd have no problems getting a wee sample - all I have to do is get comfy with piggie on lap and coffee nearby and ... weee off we go. If I want to get a REALLY quick one, I should wear my ultra fave clean jumper ...

White bits are probably calcium deposits - normal but you can go on a reduced calcium diet (or Mabel can). Flintstones knows all about that cos of the wondrous Patrick.

I would definitely use probiotics if Mabel is on Baytril. It is known to be rough on piggie tummies.

Good luck... :)

:)) Mabel is already pretty much on a low calcium diet so not too sure what else i'd change! Will sort out probiotics asap! Thank you and I did like your urine sample technique :))!

Read you're post last night but couldn't reply...Hope Mabel x) is feeling a little better today. You can always buy some wee testing sticks for home, we used to use them with Putt. If things haven't improved over the week, I would speak to the vet over the possibility of septrin as it is good for UTI's, we have had a uti clear up with baytril also. Rach and I are looking foward to meeting you later!

Thank you! Well I can always take her wee into work and get it tested! Hehe! I called the vets this morning and blood and protein tested positive. The ph level was 8.5 which is a little high :)

Really looking forward to meeting everyone too! xx>>>

Let's hope the antibiotic kick in soon, you got any probiotics?

Probiotics are currently on their way, mum's posted me some from her vets as it's cheaper ;) the only one she has is fibreplex rather than avipro plus which I know is meant to be very good. Fibreplex is more for loss of appetite isn't it?

I'll try and syringe some extra fluids now too, although she'll have to wait until later when I get back! She's quite a good drinker so it's ok and the vet told me to water down her baytril in the syringe so she's already had extra fluids this morning :)

Fibreplex is great for wet poo's, we always have a tube to hand. We use avi pro on a everyday basis when on AB's. I'll bring you some from our tub to tide you over. Vetuk sell it online. The other one to use is poo-soup! Yum :))

Aww thank you so much! I was just telling mum about poo soup :)>>> I think my OH will truly think i've lost it if he caught me doing that! mallethead

Only thing is I probably be syringing Dottie and Finley's poops into her, GROSS!

It's not as bad as it sounds honest :)) healthy piggie poo's - so either dottie's or sir Finley's will do! She'll love it! Though you may not want to sniff her breath after :))

Ewwwww! Totally disgusting but well worth it if it makes her better ;)

Right, i'd better get off here or i'll miss my train. Need to set off in 10mins...there's going to be a lot of time spent travelling today but i've got plenty of reading material! See you later, i'll give you a text when I'm close :)

Just caught up with this, poor Mabel :( Misty sends piggie kisses and cuddles to all! xoxoxoxoxoxo

Went through UTIs when we had Storm, I well remember the syringing and constant checking! Like you, I caught it through the fleece - cream fleece does have its uses! :))

PS Accidentally thanked a random post of yours on this thread, sorry mallethead

Aww, thank you, thank you! Mabel has had so many get well wishes bless her. She's doing fine, if it wasn't for me spotting the pink pee you'd have no idea she is poorly, just like her normal self! Love to you Misty, Toffee and Puck!

My gysmo had similar problems he was squeaking while peeing and I had him on baytril/metacam and for 6 months on and off he was in pain

Only Saturday he has plenty of blood when weeing and it got worse and we had to take the kind decision to have him put to sleep..the vets cleared bladder stones and we had tried everything for him

Hope she is ok

So the baytril is taking full effect on Mabel's gut flora :( tonight she has soft squidgy poos 8... i've stopped all veggies (they had some this morning) she is having pro-biotic. This is a nightmare and i'm worried about her!

On the plus side she is still eating/drinking as normal. I hate baytril! Will do a poop soup too.

She had some baytril on Friday evening, does this count as one of her days? If so then tonight is her last dose - thank god. I don't want to put anymore of that nasty stuff in her :(

Poops are much better today and not sticky - phew!

How long should I continue with the pro-biotics for?

I'd keep them going for a week after, it won't hurt.... How does she seem? Have you got any fibreplex? That will help firm up those poo's... x

Okey dokey, yup I have that too! It's even harder to get that into her, was nearly late for work this morning rolleyes the syringe is too big for her mouth and it wouldn't suck up into a smaller one so I ended up putting it on my finger and attempting to put that into her mouth :... risky but she didn't bite me! I deserve to be bitten though after what i've been doing to her all week, poor girl!

Stick a 1ml syringe into the big fibre plex syringe and push down on fibreplex plunger and pull the 1ml syringe plunger out... You'll then have fibreplex in the 1ml syringe easier to get into your mini tiger's mouth and you won't lose a finger in process :)) We discovered this when Putt was having it on a regular basis, it is tricky at first but can be sone, helps to get 2 people operating each syringe..

:)) okey dokey, thanks for the tip! Will have to get OH involved! rolleyes

:( just seen blood in the cage again and I suspect it's from Mabel. It's only been 2 months since she had the last UTI and now i'm worried it may be something else...boooo. Will book vets app tomo :...

Let us know how you get on, perhaps Cystease could work long term if it's Cystitis she has.

If she does have a stone, the good news is generally they aren't as serious as boys but of course still need medical attention.

Healing vibes to Mabel! x

Thank you, have been waiting for them all to pee just to double check. No visible blood in Dotties and Fin is refusing to pee, it's been over an hour mallethead Mabel didn't have any visible blood either but still pretty sure it's her. I'll get the vet to confirm tomo. Glad P is doing so well! :)
