My boy Jacob was castrated about 9am this morning and is just home. He is just laying there, he doesn't respond, and sprawls out. He just falls down on to his side if you touch him. His tounge is hanging out. He doesn't blink either. I'm about to go to the emergancy vet but for when I come back, if anybody has advice I would appreciate it. Thankyou.

PS he's under 1 year

He might still be dozey from the anaesthetic but they shouldn't have sent him home if he's that poorly. Has he eaten? Guinea pigs need to eat regularly otherwise their guts stop working, so he needs to either eat for himself or be syringe fed food and fluids until he's able to.

They don't blink much anyway!

Keep him warm, offer him some fluids in a syringe if you can. If the vet gives you Critical Care or similar this is a complete syringeable food. He might give a B12 injection to stimulate the appetite.

Hope all goes well

Sophie

It's normal for pigs to be a bit groggy, although a lot of people say their pigs are up and about within an hour or two I know when I had Baxter done he rested for about a day before he was his usual self.
However the fact that he falls over if you pick him up, or that his tongue is hanging out, would give me some concern. Have you tried ringing your vet for advice?
Aside from this I would say make sure there's food and water available for him, and give him something comfy like a towel or fleece to lie on. Make sure the room he's in is quiet and warm, and just keep an eye on him until you know he's completely better.
I'm sure someone more experienced with this situation will be able to help you more with the more worrying signs he's showing, but i hope he recovers quickly and is better soon <3

i am surprised your vet has let him leave this soon, i would get back onto the phone or taking him back - poor little fella.

try and make him not too warm i.e. dont use warming pads etc as with a recent anaethetised piggy it can be very dangerous for thm. make sure he is comfortable and there is food and water, maybe put some cucumber there and seek immediate help.

Hope hes okay hun
xx

I'm sorry he is so poorly after his surgery. Do you know what anesthetic the vet used and what medications (if any) were given?

Try raising his sugar levels a little. When one of ours was poorly after an op we mixed a small amount of sugar in some water and syringe fed him. He soon came round. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't but it's worth a try as it won't hurt him.
Only a little sugar mind you!.

Post-op shock. Serious condition. Rehydration fluids, preferably sub.cut. Possibly steroids. Urgent treatment required.

Hi sorry my connection hasn't been working. Went back and they said well he's fine but if not by 7pm bring him down again. So I just kept him warm (not with heatpads) but he wouldn't take veggies, fruit, hay, or even grass. I syringed him water but by 7pm no improvement so straight back to the vets who gave him a baytril injection. I didn't know that, they said they'd take him back and see his weight etc. I don't know if baytril was right I'm worried that it wasn't! Any ideas?

Since he's been laying on his side, a flop. His tongue still out so I just have to put a drop of water every 30 mins and hourly I syringe him and give critical care (I had some myself) as well as the water (not at the same time all of the time). He won't eat anything so I've just finished syringing poop mush from his brother :S and he took it fine but wasn't that bothered.

His eyes dry out if I leave them so I need to drip a bit of water to keep them moist.

My vet said it's normal but is it? I can't see me getting any sleep tonight.

you need to get him to a different vet now, please don't wait or he probably won't make it,they should not have sent him home,i can't believe they would risk his health,i hope he is ok you sound like your doing everything you can x

sorry my dam puter crashed on me i had done a huge post too!

I agree with Bonnie he needs fluids ASAP and must eat regularly.
Did they give him sub fluids when he went back to vets?
Perhaps if you post where you are somebody may know of a piggy savvy vet or rodentologist near you :)
Mushed up pellets is another one you could try too, even some little pieces of cucumber, anything to tempt him to eat love.
Wishing you both all the best, we'll have our paws crossed the little guy can pickup again quickly xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

I live in Ayrshire Scotland. I don't know of any good vets about, I will try one called collier & brock but I don't know anything about them?

He won't eat cucumber8...

awwww that's ok, what other 'wet' veggies will he eat? perhaps give him some more of those :)
SOrry being from OZ i only know a few of your vets in the whole of UK :red

Daftscotslass might be able to help, find her profile and pm her :)

I've phoned Collier and Brock and am about to go

I've tried apple, grapes, lettuce, carrot, kale, and cucumber & nothing is tempting him. I just have to lift him onto another side every 10 mins so he doesn't get sore on 1 side, he doesn't have the strength to pick himself up.

I will update when back

I'm home without my baby. They want to put him on a drip and try get him eating. I'm not going to be able to sleep but I know it's the best thing for him and I hope it does help him. They're really not impressed regarding the other vets' actions, and the letting him home so soon.. thankyou all so much for the love and support x

Bless you thanks for the lovely post. I will definitely report that vets, I was shocked because they have saved my animals lives before but that doesn't make it right or any better. I haven't slept & it's 4.01am I might go try sleep now but it won't be easy as he's just such a big lump and is always the one that comes to look for cuddles & love & attention and will sit for hours beside me on the couch or lay down if I'm dozing on and off while the other piggers free range. Sorry I just had to let that all out.:(

it is fine you have every right to air your feelings, when this sort of thing happens it takes a toll on yourself as a whole, trust me i know i was up till 3am last night and got up at 6 again not an uncommon thing and its mainly stressmallethead, our little furries seem to put us through hell sometimes but remember no matter what the outcome is you will have us here to support you,the best thing i find when Boris has been at the vets and i feel particuarly down is to have some snuggles with my other piggies they always seem to understand even when they arent normally very snuggly, its like they know how you are feeling and just for that one day they comfort you the same as your sick piggy normally would,
i hope you get some rest ill probably be here when you get up I'm always signed in xxxxxx

I'm going to force myself to bed I've had 5 cups of coffe which might make me sleepy or just plain hyper or need to wee a lot or all 3 xx>>>

oh my goodness! Good luck with the whole trying to get some sleep thing! Between the coffee and stress.

Hopefully your boy will be back to himself soon, and this other vet will help him tonight. Will be thinking about you and Jacob!

Glad to hear the new vets have actually done something to help poor Jacob, I really hope he has picked up since you took him in. Thinking of you and Jacob today, hoping for some good news when you manage to get back online. Take care of yourself too. x
