Urgent When to let go?

Baytril can upset gut flora so giving probiotics is always a good idea. You can get Pro-C from Pets at Home or off Amazon. Just put a pinch in about 5 - 10 ml of water and syringe it in around an hour or so after you give the Baytril.

Thanks Betsy I'll go get some Pro-C at Pets at Home.

That gut imbalance might be adding to his problems but wouldn't cause the rattling and weakness I'm guessing..

When dental piggies are unable to eat for themselves, or are only eating very small amounts, I aim to get around 100 to 120 mls of syringe food in, per 24 hours. The weakness could be due to lack of calories going in. Maybe ring Cat and Rabbit Clinic to ask for advice regarding the rattling. Sometimes they can sound rattily when some food is caught at the back of the mouth and then a big cough will suddenly clear it!

I am guessing you are syringe feeding? He may have aspirated a little of the syringe food. Is he still wanting to take syringe food? What size syringe are you using for feeding? The 1ml syringe with the end cut off is the best. Some people use the 15ml syringe, but it is far easier to cause aspiration with one of those, if you aren't an experienced syringe feeder. I didn't realise he had cystitis too, in addition to the dental issues. Did you tell Kim about the cystitis? I would've thought she would have suggested a change of antibiotic.
Kim just said that the antibiotic he was on wasn't going to do a lot. I'm using 1ml syringe and trying to give that in 2-3 lots. He's seemed hungry but it has been force feeding :-(

It could be that because he's not rattling at all anymore. So should I increase feed amount of he doesn't seem to be able to process it all?

What are you syringe feeding him? I find Critical Care is hated by most of our piggies, so I mush up normal nuggets and syringe those instead. I also get pouches of vegetable or fruit baby foods and feed those too, if the piggy is a bit reluctant to take much.

Didn't realise there are other antibiotics to try. I got a sample of bloody urine to take to the vet today.

What do you mean by him not processing it?
He seems to be chewing away for ages and some falls out his mouth and he's hungry and keen for the first syringe and then after that it seems a hassle for him. When I've given him tiny bit parsley today and yesterday he's chewing it for ages.

When are you next at Cat and Rabbit Clinic? I always see Simon for dental issues, as although Kim is brilliant too, Simon does have the edge, as he sees so many more and has been doing the dentals for a lot longer. If you can do little and often syringe feeding throughout the day, that will be best, if he's taking it very slowly.

Yes after reading on this site I've been giving him mashed nuggets and also emeraid which the syringe guide on here said they like the taste of better. Not using critical care anymore.

The follow up appointment is 31st Dec. Both visits were 5-6 hours and I had to throw sickies from work to do that which I never do. It'd be hard to go again soon.

I also put a bowl of porridge oats in for the dental piggies, as they find these easy to pick up and eat for themselves. They really help with weight gain too! I also find most of the piggies seem to prefer the Pets at Home nuggets mushed up, even though they aren't fed those normally.

OK that's good to know. I'm going to pets at home to get Pro C. My piggies get wheat bran as a treat and Atticus seems unable to pick it up with the front of his face/teeth. Will also get baby food thanks..

Yes one massive tongue ulcer which she said would be very sore and a smaller one elsewhere. She upped the pain meds.
That is probably a lot to do with why he's eating slowly. Hopefully it will be feeling a lot better soon.

This is the baby food that our guys love. 2019-12-14.webp

I would have gone aldi, but I never expect them to have anything, next time 👍. If I can avoid brands I will
Lol thank you I got ella's kitchen one, love aldi but it's half an hour away.

I've realised the rattling is food stuck as TEAS said. It doesn't happen when I just do 5ml feed. Thank goodness for this site. Thought it was death rattle!

I thought the same, the first time I heard it! It is rather alarming and scary and then they cough and it's all clear again!

What stage is he at in recovering then, sorry did Simon sort out the problem altogether or you have to go back
