Hello all,

My Pippin has been sneezing quite a lot the past week and initially I put it down to maybe it's the dust from the hay as it was a different brand than he's used to and he didn't show any other signs of a URI. But his sneezing sounded more harsh today and I managed to get him a vet appointment.

The vet said it seems to be the beginning of a URI and gave me two medications for him; metacam and baytril. Are these the normal meds for URI's? And the vet only gave me a week supply, is this enough for Pippin to be okay afterwards?

I'm just feeling overly conscious as this is my first time looking after an ill piggy.

Thank you in advance!

Metacam is for pain relief and an anti inflammatory. I don’t usually have it prescribed for URI's but your vet may have thought it could help if your pigs airways are inflamed.

Baytril is the go to antibiotics and most vets try this first for infections. Most other antibiotics aren't licenced for pigs whereas Baytril is, so they try it first.

As you only have one week supply the vet will expect you to go back for a checkup. It's unlikely that the infection will be completely gone so the vet will probably give you some more.

I had a piggy with a horrible URI. He was just a baby when we got him and he was so sick. First a vet prescribed him bactrim, then when that didn't help I went to a new vet that gave him baytril. It saved his life!

Hope Pippin gets feeling better!

Hi I had the exact thing happen to Mo last year October. His sneezing increased so off to the vets! It was actually me who suggested the idea of it being the beginnings of a URI to the vet who believed it was an allergy but couldn't be sure as his lungs were clear and he was otherwise healthy. But she agreed it could be and gave me baytril and metacam to be giving morning and night for a week. He was on them for 4 days when I stopped because he got diarrhea - the vet said we should if that happened. He didn't stop sneezing and he still doesn't but it's definitely less frequent and since changing his hay back to Timothy it's alot better. I'm glad I said about my fear of it being a URI and getting the Meds because it definitely put my mind at ease and if it was in fact a URI stopped it.
