Hi everyone, I haven't been around for a while - busy, busy, busy! - but I would really appreciate some advice. My name is Tracey and I've been running a small holiday boarding facility for rabbits, guinea pigs, etc (www.vipiggies.co.uk) for three years. I have loads of experience with guineas (as well as the boarders, I have 10 of my own), but I'm a bit stumped with Toby, a piggie in my care.

It's a strange arrangement, actually; his owner (who's been a boarding customer for a couple of years now) has accepted a job in Dubai. When she was first offered the job (a couple of months ago) she initially asked me to care for Toby, for a couple of months, until she got settled and then she would make arrangements to fly Toby over to join her. We also had a couple more conversations about the situation (there was a lot to discuss) and we arranged for Toby to come stay with us from Wednesday of last week.

However, when he arrived with me on Wednesday, I was shocked speechless by the poor fella......he was literally half the size he was the last time I saw him, totally skin and bone and drooling at the mouth. Toby's owner explained that he'd had two lots of dental surgery (it was difficult to get to the bottom of what that surgery entailed), that he'd seen the vet that morning (before coming to me) for a post-op check, and the vet had said Toby was doing well. She also mentioned that Toby had had a 'gut infection'.

As far as I was concerned, though, Toby was NOT doing well at all!....the poor thing was literally staving to death before my eyes (I weighed him when he arrived at 530g....he's fully grown and was quite chunky when he last came to stay with us). I booked him in to see my own vet, Marie Kubiak at Manor Vets, on Friday evening. The verdict was that Toby has "chronic and severe dental disease", poor fella. Considering he had only very recently had his dental surgery (hence the post-op check-up two days before), his teeth had already started to get long and grow over his tongue. Marie said that his back teeth had been so overgrown for so long that he no longer had any muscle tone around his jaw and his front teeth are no longer meeting :-(

We agreed that Toby is in no way well enough to undergo more dental surgery, so the plan is for me to try to get him fitter and get some weight on him. I have 10 days and then we'll decide about his future.

Oh, and the day after Toby saw the vet, I had a call from one of the vets to say that he also has coccidiosis :-( I assume that info was sent from his previous vet in Cambridge. He's now on a course of Baycox to treat that.

Since the day he arrived, I've been desperately trying to get the poor fella to eat....I really feel like I'm fighting to save his life. His appetite is ok, most of the time he so desperately wants to eat, but he just can't close his jaws to pick any food up or chew. He's frantic to eat veggies, but no matter how small I chop them, he just can't get anything in his mouth.

He's guzzling down recovery food from a spoon, which I'm giving him every 2 or 3 hours, as much as he'll eat. I've also grated up some carrot, apple, melon, bell pepper and cucumber, and he's been eating a very small bit of that from a spoon. He is frantic to eat, you can see him panic whenever I move the spoon away from him to refill it with recovery food. I've also been trying to tempt him with chopped up fresh grass and dandelions, chopped/shredded fresh herbs (which he can't manage, even when I try hand-feeding it to him piece by piece), pure fruit baby food, veggie baby food, porridge made with water, and I've even tried to puree grass for him :-) That wasn't a great success! He has wet, mushed up pellets in his cage, as well as a bowl of water with probiotic and a bottle of plain water. I've been syringe feeding him Dioralye as well.

As I'm sure there are loads of TGPF members (sadly) with loads of experience of feeding underweight, neglected and sick piggies, I really want to pick your brains for any ideas to keep poor little Toby eating (I can't be with him all the time).

He's indoors and wrapped up snugly (fleecy igloo with a fleece blanket wrapped round it for extra warmth) and he's currently bedded on paper and soft hay (the whole cage is stuffed with it), he also has a 'hay cake' which he seems very keen to nibble at (although he's not getting much hay from it, he can't even manage to eat the little bits I pull from the cake for him).

I'm really at a loss...other than what I'm already doing/trying, are there any other tips you can give me, anything you've tried in the past that has worked?

Oh, he's on Metacam daily and Septrin twice daily (both of which the owner forgot to bring with her....good job I have a mini piggie pharmacy in the fridge, just in case!)

I really appreciate any suggestions you guys can offer, and hope you can point me in the right direction or give me some tips/hints, etc.

Many thanks, Tracey x

Hi Tracey, first of all so pleased he is in the best of hands with you both.

My heart sank reading that, poor little piggie :( All you can do is what you are doing and hope you can get the weight up with the recovery food. The plus point is he wants to eat but obviously can't with his mouth being the way it is. Has he got any pain relief for any discomfort he may be getting in his mouth. Our vet does conscious dentals if that is an avenue you think may be worth pursuing... I would advise speaking to Debbie, as you know she has tons of experience in syringe feeding.

Lots of love to Toby, keep us updated on him x

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this, you must be distraught :( I can't offer any advice but I really, really hope that someone will be along soon who can. Gentle hugs to you and Toby xx

He really needs to get his teeth sorted asap, although I can appreciate your worry about that with him being so frail. Could we get him here so he could be seen by Simon Maddock? I am happy to offer a temporary sanctuary place to him so he can get the treatment he needs.

Nothing useful to add but just wanted to send a message of support and encouragement to you and Toby. That was a very kind offer of the Excellent Adventure Sanctury. x

Poor Toby, what a sad story. Thank goodness he has come to you - its heartbreaking to think that he is so desperate to eat but can't.

The offer from the Ex

I can't offer any advice, I just wanted to wish you and Toby all the best and I really hope it makes it through.

Hi Lee and Rach, thanks for the love being sent to poor Toby...he really is a sick, frail little fella.....he's a tri-coloured sheltie and he used to have such a silky, lustrous coat....now it's matted with drool, bits of food and lord knows what else, and he has small bald patches around his shoulders :-( He's so poor, that I really don't have the heart to fiddle with him, bathe him, or anything too fussy....he's sooo thin that I'd be scared of chilling him, so he's just had the odd spruce-up with a baby wipe.

He's on metacam, so yes to the pain relief. He's taking food from both a spoon and a syringe, and the current favourites are Recovery and Cow & Gate pure fruit baby food, both of which I can feed from a syringe it necessary.

I will keep you updated, thanks again x

Hi there, that's such a kind offer, I really do appreciate it. I agree, he really does need to get his teeth sorted ASAP, he can't go on being syringe fed indefinitely, it's just not feasible. He has a real fighting spirit though - I honestly don't know how he's survived so long, to be honest - and he's such an adorable character, despite all of his problems. For example, his cage is chest high to me, and whenever I open the front door, he runs at me and climbs onto me for a cuddle :-) Which is lovely, but it means that I've had to change my top four times today as I come away from him covered in mushy food and drool!

I think I'd be confident that he'd cope with a conscious dental, and I did give some thought earlier today to getting him seen by Simon Maddock as I know he has a fantastic reputation with dental piggies. It's incredibly generous of you to offer Toby a sanctuary place, thank you. Are you still happy to have him whilst he's only part way through his treatment for coccidiosis? I'm finding the whole 'barrier nursing' thing to be incredibly time consuming, but I appreciate that those kind of precautions must come as second nature to you.

I'll have a word with my hubby tomorrow, and see if we can get Toby to you at the weekend; would that work for you? I'll PM you, though, if that's ok?

Oh, i could also bring Toby's 4ft hutch with him if you have space for it, as that way he won't contaminate one of your cages.

Thanks again so much, I'll get back to you ASAP

Thanks for the support, it's all very much appreciated, and yes, it was a very kind offer of the Excellent Adventure Sanctuary

I am very glad that Debbie (TEAS)has offered help. She's got real experience with dental piggies, and between her and Simon maddock, poor Toby has the best chance to be saved if that is possible. He will probably have to have regular dental treatment from now on. Simon and Debbie have worked miracles with quite a few piggies that were on death's door. Poor boy! I am sending my vibes to him!

That would be fine. As soon as I know when you can get him here I will get him booked in to see Simon. In fact I will make an appointment for Monday when I go in tonight, as it can always be cancelled if need be. Also will see if there is anything available for Saturday as they are open until 12 noon and if you could get him here before then that might be better. Simon has worked wonders with so many of the piggies here and if anyone can help this little chap then it's him. x

It was so sad to read of Toby's problems, poor little chap. I do hope he'll be okay.

I hoping that Toby is still fighting and with us today. Why do you think dental problems have developed in Toby - especially as you have seen him several times before and he has been in good health? Is it likely to be diet related or a problem with his jaw structure?

Thanks Weibke, he's still very sick and frail, but he's started to eat and drink all by himself overnight :-) He'd polished off a mini-mountain of soggy pellets by morning, and he's been drinking to pro-biotic water from the bowl, bless him.

Hi Debbie, many thanks again. I could actually get him to you tomorrow, if that's do-able from your end? That way, if there's an earlier appointment available, he could be seen by Simon sooner. Even though he's doing loads better than when he first arrived - he's eating mushy pellets and drinking by himself - he really needs help urgently. Tracey x

Hiya, Toby's good today, thanks - he's started eating and drinking by himself overnight - but he's still very sick :-(I really don't know how the dental problems developed. Before he arrived on Wednesday, I hadn't seen him for about 18months as his owner moved down to Cambridge. I know whenever he stayed with me, he had a good diet (plenty of hay, loads of veggies, etc) but I really don't know how he was managed at home. Maybe his teeth have overgrown due to lack of hay to munch? In the past, Toby's stayed with us 3 or 4 times, all of them long term stays (a month or 6 weeks at a time) and, in my experience of him, he's never shown any signs of ill health in any way. He was always a chunky, glossy-coated, friendly, inquisitive boy with a fantastic appetite......this change in him has been a massive shock to me.

Have just phoned vets and Simon can see him tomorrow evening at 7 pm so yes, get him here tomorrow and we can start getting this little guy sorted. From how you describe him he sounds like he has a great will to survive. xx

That's brilliant news! Many thanks again. I'll send you a PM now to sort out the arrangements. Toby really is a special piggie, like you say, he has a huge will to survive. Tracey x

Glad this boy's going to be seen so quickly and for both you and Debbie helping him. Let us know how he gets on. x

Toby is settling in nicely at the Sanctuary and will see Simon tonight at 7 pm. He's very frail, but has a fighting spirit so hopefully that will carry him through.

It was lovely to meet Tracey and I will be phoning her tonight as soon as we have seen Simon. x

So pleased he has made his way safely to you.

Lots of love to Toby x

Hi Debbie, it was great to meet you too, and thanks again for taking Toby in (I know I sound like a cracked record!). Glad to hear he's settled in, my lovely little boy. The place here isn't the same without him!

I'll be anxiously waiting to hear Simon's verdict.....fingers crossed something can be done for him.

Am sat here watching my own little Toby while reading all about yours. What a heartbreaking situation. The poor little man. I really hope his owner had done everything she could for him before she left and that this isn't down to neglect. If it is down to neglect I hope karma seeks revenge!

Sending all positive thoughts to Toby. It is so wonderful he has you and the sanctuary fighting for him - whatever happens now will be down to nature and not lack of trying.

Think we are all on tenterhooks waiting to hear what Simon has to say.

Big hugs
Abi, Toby & Barney
