I came home from work and Tallulah didnt come chirping up as usual, odd enough but when I made her food she didnt bother squeaking etc and now the food is out she isnt interested. She has at most walked a little way.

I think she might be in pain somewhere along the lines.

I have Baytril, Septrim and Meloxidyl in the house. The latter is a non sterodial anti inflammatory drug that alleviates inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic muscoo-skeletal disorders - she had it before for a UTI but I cant remember what part it was.

She was on Septrim for 10 days about 5 days ago for a UTI - could this have upset her? She seemed to improve with her UTI on them, so incase its her bladder being incredibly sore should I maybe try it?

Emergency vets is out the question, before anyone starts I've got £30 to my name, I've just paid out £60 off for heart meds for Gypsey and pay day is tomorrow. They dont accept credit, its £100 just to get in their doors and they are USELESS. I can get her in asap tomorrow but I need advice!

I don't really have any advice, but I really hope she is ok.

me neither but fingers crossed for her.

Only thing i could think is a probiotic, but i dont know really, you need someone with knowledge.

She has had a pee, so I'm guessing thats any urine blockage out the door?
She has eaten a small amount of dill as she sits next to me. She hasnt pooped next to me yet, so thats now a concern for me.

Is there any kind of veg or pharmecy meds you can get thats safe to get them to poop just incase I need them?

Her stomach is making a slight popping noise? Just now and then like three small popping noises, for lack of a better word...

Hmmmm I would be tempted to give some painkiller.

I have been in this situation once but fortunately it was in the morning I noticed and we were straight to the vet where he was given fluids and got him home the next day.

Just get straight to the vet in the morning

Sorry i can't be more help

You're stepping into dangerous territory medicating on the basis it might be this, it might be that. Yes, it could well be a UTI but it could also be something completely different. If she isn't eating then you need to get her seen as soon as possible as the last thing you want is her digestive system going into shutdown. The main reason for her not pooping will be the fact she's not eating. They need to eat pretty much constantly.

Can you even phone your vet for emergency advice?

I'm not medicating her for anything, I'm asking if she can be given anything if she does not poop soon.

The emergency vet will say bring her in, they rarely give advice over the phone. Its not just money with the vet, its the fact the one that does all the emergency for our town is useless with pigs and has given me things inthe past I later cmae to find out were dangerous to pigs, thankfully I didnt give my other pig the stuff.
Obviously if she needs the vet I will get her to them, I'm just wanting to see if she will poop.
She has eaten some storks of dill.

The main worry is blockage if she's not pooping. Obviously it could be as simple as if she's not eating, her gut isn't going to be moving and, as a result, she's not pooping. Do you have Critical Care?

Just an update. She has had CC, Infacol (1ml) and Nurofen (0.2ml). She seems better, shes active and bright eyed so I think she can make it until morning (also pay day...). I have given her constant massages with a viabrating pillow.

She is now eating dill and hay, although after being told dill can actually cause bloat I have now removed it. She is walking around much more in her cage and is munching on timothy hay as we speak.

She passed a feceal (sp) like poop but did refuse to eat it when I offered. But one poop is good news.

Thanks so much for all your help, especially the link to Laura's hotline. Laura offered SO much amazing advice and I cant thank her or any of you enough for advice and well wishes. They truely are like my kids and my world, so all this advice has pretty much saved my world :)

She will still be going vets in the morning to the only vet I can trust, and I want them to give her a thourough examination all over. I dont think it was dill that caused this bloat as it would be ages ago since last night dinnertime but I do think stress of being uncomfy with her bladder might have, and its not normal or fair on her to have this, diabetic or not. So whatever the vets want to do to find out whats going on with her, I will throw money there way so it happens.

Last night she ate some carrot, tomatoe and pepper (gradually) and has continued to to eat hay. She has also gone back to pooping 80% of her normal poops. I have seperated her from her cage mate (they are both fine on their own as used to it because of prev. spays) as to monitor the amount she is pooping/eating/drinking.

She hasnt been to the water bottle so I continue to syringe her water (which may be why she hasnt got, but rather be safe than sorry).

She has had 1ml of Infacol at about 10pm last night and some more around 6am this morning. I will continue this up until the vets. She has 0.2ml of Nurofen (kids) at ten last night so will give her more at around 11 this afternoon. Massaging her and using the viabrating cushion each 2 hours last night also and this morning. Her urine is working fine, she peed a nice great circle of it over my clean sheets :L

She is booked in the vets for 3pm (earliest avaliable as they are doing alot of operations today and only have the nurse avaliable otherwise).

Pay day today, thank god!

I am glad Tallulah has picked up a lot from how she was when you started this thread. Good luck at the appointment this afternoon, let us know how she gets on. :)

Glad you got in touch with Laura and it seems like Tallulah is feeling a bit better which is brilliant news xx

Sorry I havent updated you all, unfortunatly we were battling with problems with my dog also throughout Tallulah's ordeal and on the same appointment my dog was pts - I've been trying to not think too much about the entire thing but I feel guilty for not coming on to let you all know whats happening.

The vet said Tallulah's bloat was most likely caused through the stress of the pain of her UTI's. She was xrayed for bladder stones and there werent any formation at all, not even traces. The vet said its likely she is a pig who will have to be on long term medication for urinary problems, and he seems very capable of monitoring them as he said he has experiance with pigs having this problem.

She is on Septrim and we have to go back Xmas eve.

He is an amazing vet, the best so far. Its James from Ark Vetinary Centre.

Hope Tallulah is feeling better now. I have had urinary problems for 3.5 years now with my 3 girls, now down to one. :( So much so that I'm too nervous to get a new friend for Cassie, in case it is infectious and is spread to another, and the cycle goes on.

So many vets etc have now said that urinary issues are rife in this area, so I really think the hard water plays a massive part. I now have Cassie on Deeside bottled water.

Sorry to hear about your dog hon. Very sad.

Glad the vet is good and seems in control of Tallulah's illness xx

Well I did find it strange my vet said he had had quite a few cases of it. I think I might start giving bottled water aswell then after xmas, are all bottle waters okay for pigs? Where do you get Deeside from - dont think I've heard of it.

Gypsey has never had a urine infection, but shes less sensitive overall to food/life than Tallulah.

You can get the Deeside water (which was the one that Vedra recommended - very low in calcium) from Waitrose in Colchester and often in Asda too. :)

So sorry to hear about your dog, it's dreadful when they have to leave us.

I hope Tallulah is doing ok today. xx

I understand no $...why not give her the rest of the antibiotics rather than nothing, since they were for her before, perhaps its the same thing?-sherrilynn770

Oh i just caught up with this again, I'm so sorry you had to have your baby pts, i lost my dog well over a year ago now and i still miss her every single day even though i have two more. They are like your best friends ever.

Glad your piggy doing ok though.

Hope it continues x

:)

The main worry is blockage if she's not pooping. Obviously it could be as simple as if she's not eating, her gut isn't going to be moving and, as a result, she's not pooping. Do you have Critical Care?

That's right. Any sort of recovery mix for small herbivores mixed with bio-lapis (it takes a bit long to get from Amazon, 3- 4 days, can be too late) ideally would be perfect. You can add medicinal charcoal and pineapple juice (home made, no sugar, sweet isn't good for them) and syringe the piggy. Get Acidophilus if you don't have bio-lapis at home. They must eat constantly. Even if they recover after an illness that was the reason why they stopped eating they cannot recover from liver failure that follows not eating. You have to syringe feed the pig with recovery mix. If you don't have any, put some greens in the blender. If you don't have any greens, go outside and cut some grass using scissors even from under the snow and put that into the blender. They must feed constantly. Wrap the pig into the towel, that will stop her moving and resisting, because most likely you'll have to force feed.

We noticed medicinal charcoal + bio-lapis + pineapple juice helps to start their bowls moving.

Let us know how you are doing. Hope everything is going to be well. x

If Critical Care is not available guinea pig feed pellets can be mixed with water and blended.

I think it's quite dangerous to advise people to give their guinea pig something that is, in effect, a strong laxative when they don't know what the problem is. The last thing an anorexic pig needs is chronic diarrhoea and a combination of charcoal and pineapple juice (not to mention the grass) is liable to do just that. Bear in mind that many people who read this are young and/or first time owners and I'd hate to think that someone would see the above post and think this was a good thing to do if their pet isn't eating.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Char.
