My piggies have 2 sides of their cages covered with a light blanket because they always choose to lay out in the open at night! Only one will cover herself with hay, they are always nice and toasty in the morning so it must work.
Also have snugglesafe pads if it gets extra cold, although I checked them a few nights ago and noticed some white hard substance on both of them? They were bought last year and I never fully heat them because I'm not 100% what settings to use on the new microwave. Here's a photo:
