I’ve just bought some wooden hideys for my guinea pigs and was wondering if anyone knows of a guinea pig safe coating that I could use to waterproof them from urine and prevent mould growing.

My guinea pigs will probably chew round the edges so I want to be sure that it is 100% non-toxic.

Thank you for your help :)

I have used Cuprinol Garden Shades for the outside of their hutch, the divider between their sleeping area and main section, and their mezzanine. (Indeed you can see the 'delightful' purple in my avatar -- my daughters' favourite colour!) It says, on the tin, 'Believed to be safe, once dry, for use on wood which pets, wild animals and birds come into contact or gnaw.' It had been a concern of mine that they would gnaw on the painted wood, however safe the paint is touted to be, so they have wooden and wicker and bark and cardboard things everywhere, to gnaw on instead. (That strategy must be working a little as their hutch has barely been chewed but everything else is.) As for protection from urine, I don't know. For that I have put lino on the floor areas, but that isn't helpful for a hidey.

Just to clarify-- as you would expect, you can get many many different colours, so you don't have to have in-your-face-purple (sorry, 'purple pansy')! The things I do for my daughters...

I will have a look at Cuprinol Garden Shades so thank you!

I also thought about making my own wood sealant like this one: DIY Beeswax Wood Polish and Sealant out of beeswax and coconut oil/olive oil as that would be more natural and non-toxic. It may not be as effective, but I’m wary of the chemicals in products that you can buy.

I have never coated my wooden hideys at all. If they get urine soaked and ruined that way (which mine haven’t in the 18 months I’ve had these particular ones), then I wouldn’t want my piggies to still have access to them so would throw them away in any event.
