I just got back from a 1 week vacation and my female guinea pig Toby seems to have lost weight. I have never weighed her before but she is noticeably thinner and lighter. My next door neighbor cam over everyday and changed the water and filled the hay and pellets if needed. My other guinea pig pippin is also a female and has not lost or gained any noticeable weight. I fed both of them lettuce and cleaned their cage. They both ate but Toby ate slower than normal. Whenever I open the fridge door both piggies normally squeak as loud as they can and Toby is always the loudest. When I opened the fridge today, Toby made a feeble few squeaks. She also has a few crusties in the corners of her eyes. Is Toby sick? If so is there anything I can do without taking her to the vet and should I separate them in case of sickness spreading?

Ultimately she needs to see a vet. Weight loss is serious, as is a general poor demeanor and eye discharge. It is impossible to say what the problem is, but she needs to see a vet to diagnose the issue.

Please start weighing her so you can monitor how much she is eating. If she is still losing weight, you will need to step in with syringe feed and watering.

I can only stress again- a vet visit sooner rather than later is absolutely vital.

I will try to find a vet. Is an exotic pet vet ok? @Adelle

A vet that specialises in guinea pigs, yes, or at the very least one with knowledge on guinea pigs.

Have you checked the recommended vet locator on the forum?

If you could add your location to your profile, this will help us advise you on vets near you.

I will tag @Wiebke as she has good knowledge of piggy savvy vets in many areas.

Hi! Please top up Toby with syringe feed and water, and weigh her daily at the same time.

Have her seen by a piggy savvy vet as soon as you can get an appointment. Make sure that he checks her molars, too, not just her front teeth. We have got a recommended UK vet locator on the top bar, but can provide a link for recommended vets in some other countries.

As we ahve members from all over the world, we find it very helpful in being able to tailor any advice to what is relevant for you straight away if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. thank you!
