What could've happened to cause a 1/4 in. cut in Rockey's skin?

:'( :'(

I'm so worried! I just don't know would've caused it or how or even when it happened!
I went to take new photos of him today and after about the third click I'd noticed the wound in his side as it was a little pink under his white fur. I immediately picked him up and checked it out. Sure enough he appears to have some kind of wound in his skin. It's not really deep, but I did put some anti-bacterial stuff on it to keep out infection. It has me worried though as to what could've caused it because I don't want it happening ever again..

He lives in a 2x3 C&C cage alone. He has a plastic litter pan that hooks to the edge of his pen. He has a bell in there with chewing wood. He has a metal pellet bowl that hangs on the wall (the only semi-sharp parts may be the things that keep it held to the cage, but they are secured and bent down so he couldn't have gotten access). He has a water bottle, but the thing that keeps it on is too high for his reach and faces down, doesn't seem to be out of place at all. He's bedded in pine, but it's really really fine, nothing sharp in there I'm sure as I run my hands through it and check before replacing my guineas.

We have a German Shepherd Dog, and yes, he is a bit playful but has never been able to reach the guineas. I have a wooden door and gate plus, the cages are always shut and nothing was out of order when I got home.

So, as you may see this leaves me quite puzzled. :embarassed:

Anyone have any ideas as to what could've caused it? :'(

:o :o :o :o oh love i'm sorry, mmmmmm he hasn't perhaps burst a cyst or abscess?
You mentioned the bowl do you think he's got under it somehow and got stuck? you know how guineas are sooo inquisitive...
I do hope everything will be ok, sounds like you've got to it in time and well done for immediately bathing it O0
Keep us posted, i'm sure somebody else might have a suggestion O0

I don't think it was a cyst or abscess. I would've felt it for sure as he's taken out just about every day for quite a while to be loved. :smitten: I pet him where this appeared, so I don't think it was that..

There's a slight chance that he got under his bowl, it is about 1/2 up off the ground...but like I said the even semi-sharp parts are bent under so he can't reach them.

I may run him down to the vet down the street if it gets any worse. Although it does appear to be healing quite well with the antibiotic creame I'll keep an eye on it. :)

is there any hair loss around the wound? Tilly was the same one day there was a wound on her side and it was a fungal infection she didnt itch or anything really but her hair loss got worse the vet gave her a anti inflammatory injection and pain relief to stop it getting sore and some ivomec and I bought some gorgeous guineas stuff and she is fab again now :)
Hope piggy is ok ;)

Nope, no noticeable hair loss around the area although that will definitely be something I will be looking for in the future.

Geeze if this isn't the most puzzling thing I've ever encountered! 98)
