Hi everyone!

We've only had our piggies for just over a month - and was discussing what we'd do with them when we go away. We usually go for a week at the end of August - so not urgent.

Do people take them with them or move them to a friends/family's house?! How unsettled do would the guineaa pigs get with either of these options?!

Thank you for any advice!

Btw - my guinea pigs are outside at the moment x

I'm lucky that my nanna is an animal lover so she had my boys at her house for a week while I was away. I wrote down their little routines for her so they were being fed at the same times etc, and they were absolutely fine :)

My boys live indoors. If I am going away for less than a week I take them with me if possible, otherwise get family or friends to pop in & feed them & poop scoop.. If longer they stay at my son's house, because they will need a full clean-out once a week . I have their folding indoor run which goes with them as their temporary home. So far, the boys have been fine with all 3 methods. My son, who had them for a month once, was amazed at how they wheeked every morning at 7am if he had not served their brekkie vegies by then. They must have felt at home because here too they set their alarm for 7am. I think the fact that their familiar things are with them helps in a new environment.

We have piggy boarding here as well which I thought I might have to use in my upcoming February hols, but no, son's family is able to step into the breach once again thank goodness. But I do know people who have used piggy boarding with no problems for their piggies.

I have a spare hutch down at my parents and my boys go on 'holiday' to Wales when we go away. I take their run and various furniture down for them so that they can follow their usual routine of daytime grazing and frolicking.

Mum is fairly pig aware and I know they usually gain weight when I leave them down there. They also get into the habit of getting given a bag of fresh grass at about 4:30am (Mum is a milk recorder so is often up early) as a first breakfast before they go out and graze in their run all day on the lawn which is left long for them by my Dad.

Once my previous pairs had got used to the routine of being boxed up and transported down to the village they very quickly settled and seemed to know what was going on. I know I'm lucky to have such good holiday accommodation for my boys. I hope my new pair settle as well when I leave them in a few weeks time.

I'm lucky that me and my parents never really all go away together so usually my dad is around to look after them, he's developed quite a bond with them! In fact he's looking after them just now while I'm away. If we were all away together I'd get a friend to come in and look after them for me. Not entirely sure what I'd do if going away for more than a week as then they'd need a cage clean and with my cage it's a bit much to ask of anyone! I'd probably put them into boarding if I did.

Mine stay at home, I get a relative to pop in and feed them etc.. I never go away for more than a week, I usually clean them before I go then get reletive to spot clean as necessary and fill my fridge with veg etc. Before I go.

I look after my friends piggies when they are away but they don't look after theirs like I do with mine so I put mine in boarding where I know they are looked after how I want!

Mine board with my vet as I have one on daily meds & two others that might need meds & as I am in the vets virtually every week anyway they are pretty used to her lol :)

I don't go away either, in fact we have a family wedding next year and I have no clue what I am going to do if we have to be away overnight. I have 6 pigs on heart meds, and others on Glucosamine for bladder issues.

I never go away as I have nobody to care for mine.
Neither do I but because I would not be happy leaving any of my animals - I certainly wouldn't leave the dogs! I've actually never been on a holiday in my entire life, but that's a very small price to pay for the privilege of sharing my life with my animals!

I end up going away and the OH stays as home as he has our chins too and he hates leaving them......besides... it is his holiday away from his clucking wife with me absent and him having the house to himself lol! We did a week last year and a good friend came and stayed in our house...back then I did not have the boys however....

Normally family would look after ours but since our last holiday 3 years ago we have taken in many more animals :) When we go away next year we have someone coming in to look after everyone. Other than that i run my on boarding business so our holidays are going to be out of holiday season. When we do look after other peoples we ask them to fill in an individual care sheet so we know as much about their pet as possible to keep all their routines etc :) I also update on my facebook page and website, i can also email so you can be sure that your pet is been well looked after :)

Don't get me wrong I hate leaving them & fret the whole time we are away :( Unfortunately OH insists on a holiday as he works very hard all year, he looks forward to it :) I can't wait to get back to the piggies lol :)

Aw thank you for all your replies! We always have a weeks holiday in August - it helps us get through the summer holidays with the kids having something to look forward to! Will miss lily and Loki though - can't believe they've only been here a month, I can't image them not being here now x

You must be minted if you live in Chelsea! :))
